Good day from CMGC,

We are into the final month of what has been an epic year. 2015 has seen the club go from strength to strength.

Although this past week has seen the course take a battering with the wet and windy weather the green keepers have been doing their best to keep everything playable. Although wet underfoot the greens are rolling so well as the video shows.

Remember we never have temporary greens here at Cleobury. The odd tee is now on a mat which is to protect it.

Christmas Video 2015

It is that time of the year once again…… the annual CMGC Christmas video is now live!

Please click here to view this year's video or alternatively click on the video image.

Scary to think this is our 6th one! As normal there are dodgy hair styles and jumpers on show as a bit of fun but also some serious product promotions we have at CMGC.

If you would like any of the products featured pleased come into the golf centre and we will be happy to assist you.

Winter League

The Mixed Winter league as organised by Jamie and Deborah Fearnly is going from strength to strength with 24 playing last weekend. The next round will be on the 13th December. As this will be "the morning after the night before", i.e. after the Cleobury Golf Club Christmas Dinner, this will only be for nine holes and teeing at 11am.

It is open to members, please meet at the club 45 minutes before hand whilst the draw is done and food will then be served after play. A perfect way to spend a Sunday!

 Assistants news

Amy's PGA Residential

As part of my PGA professional Training I have to attend a week residential at The Belfry once a year, where I have lectures covering all my First Year Subjects; which include Golf Retailing, Equipment Tech, Sports Science and Golf Coaching. I was a little apprehensive to begin with, as I knew the week would include meeting 60+ new people, as well as taking in a lot of information.

However as soon as I found my seat for the first talk of the day on Monday morning and got chatting to other Assistants around me, I knew I had a great week ahead. Monday consisted of 4 General chats covering our exams, assignments, what was expected, some general study skills as well as a Chat from Jaime Edwards, who works for a company called Trained Brain, his talk was all about self belief and stepping out of our comfort zone.

Tuesday was my first proper day of lectures and it began with Equipment Tech. This involved measuring and changing loft and lie, custom fitting a player for new clubs and building a club from components. This was something I hadn't properly experienced before and I was extremely excited to get started and learn all about this topic field. The best part of the day was building a club! It was great to see it in such small pieces and then have a completed club ready to hit at the end of it. The club I made was a Left handed TaylorMade R11 Taylormade 6 iron! Wednesday was all about retailing, the business side of golf. Thursday was Sports Science looking at the body, junior coaching, screening and so much more. This has given me so many ideas to help expand junior golf but by looking at the components involved in the swing and making it more fun and not just about hitting balls.

Finally Friday came and it was Golf Coaching. After getting 100% in my pre test I was feeling confident about what I knew already and what I was about to learn. This taught me more about the impact factors from ball flights and how to tell what they mean.

I have made some great friends, learnt so much and am very much on my way to becoming a Full PGA Professional, 100% looking forward to the next residential!

Competition news

Rob Winnall Finally Gets Top Spot.

The roll up here at Cleobury Mortimer was a brutal affair with wind and rain making the conditions very tough. Despite this some great golf was once again played, Andy Thomas back after an injury lay off shot 36 points to just miss out on the prizes.

Lee Glasby who finished third last week repeated this with a steady 37 points, Colm Berry who has had a quiet year by his standards did enough to shoot 38 points to finish second and also get some winter order of merit points on the board.

The weekend however belonged to Rob Winnall who finally took top spot on count back after missing out on count back last week. Rob is one of the steadiest golfers at Cleobury who very rarely misses a fairway making him a very dangerous player this time of year.

Final standings

1st - Rob Winnall - 38 points CB
2nd - Colm Berry - 38 points
3rd - Lee Glasby - 37 points

Thought of the week

Speed Up Play - Nick Faldo's Thoughts.

One of the big stories in the press over 2015 has been slow play and ways to increase golf participation numbers. This week the legendary Sir Nick Faldo has had his thoughts on the matter. Please click here to take a look.

What is really interesting about this article is that it highlights what a visionary the CMGC course designer Ray Bouldwin was. CMGC is the perfect club for the modern person with each nine holes coming back to the club house along with many points where an extra couple of holes can be played and you still come back to the clubhouse.

"We have to break down the mentality and design courses, especially around hotels, that enable people to get out for two or three hours. Obviously, full courses with length are necessary for tournament golf, but there has to be a change of thinking for people who want to go and have some fun."

It just goes to show back in 1993 when Deer Park opened, 1996 when Badgers Sett opened and 1999 when Foxes Run opened that Ray, Graham and Robert saw the changes and adaptations the modern golfer would need to have.
