Some BIG news coming out of CMGC this week….

Another week flies by here at CMGC as we get closer to Christmas, the start of I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and the conclusion of X Factor! As normal things have been nice and busy at Cleobury despite some heavy downpours the course is standing up really well. Buggies are assessed on a daily basis so please call ahead if you require one. As this picture shows below the course is still very green with a great surface of grass which is ideal for the colder months ahead.

News from Dave

Over the last three months I have been on a bit of a mission, in August the PGA made contact asking if I would be interested in turning professional and taking on a revolutionary two year fast track PGA program. Based on the fact that I have already completed a fast track BA Hons in Business Management five years ago & Sports Turf Managements NVQS 8 years ago this was something I was keen to look into.

Obviously because of my job it is often difficult to play in competitions as I don't want it to be a conflict of interest, so in the past I would play scratch matches (as it's always nice to beat other clubs) but that was about it. However because of this opportunity I was keen to prove myself and went lesson and practice mad and got my handicap down to 4 and met the criteria to get on the course. There was just one stumbling block the playing ability test, that was when things started to go a little pear shaped.

I got quite sick in early September with stomach problems and could not play golf as it was too painful to swing a club I went into the 36 hole stroke play test with no golf under my belt a stone lighter than I was two weeks earlier and nowhere near fit enough. I battled hard but on the final few holes it all caught up with me and I just missed out. That was when I thought it was over, but two weeks later I got a life line with one last chance to get through at Stonebridge Golf Club. This gave me 10 days to prepare and thankfully, fully fit I made it through. The course has since slightly changed and is now longer than the two years due to some learning outcomes not having been finalised in time.

Obviously it is quite a big decision to take on a foundation degree at the age of 30 with the amount of hours I work here at the club, family life outside of the club and the £12,000 it costs to take on the course.

However over the last 5 years since I took on an active role within the golf centre, the business has transformed with: customer service, sales, the overall experience and value for money members and visitors get at Cleobury being the best it has ever been. The services I offer the club are the same as a Professionals but I just don't have the PGA letters next to my name. Most people that come to the club see me as the professional because of my appearance, representing the club in Pro-Am's (often competing with the pro's score) and sponsorship deals I have in place with Stuburt and Titleist. Moreover this weekly newsletter that I: write, design and construct is getting better and better with fantastic read rates on a weekly basis and the level of engagement is constantly increasing. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our readers for their loyalty in making this a success. It therefore make sense for me to take this step in my career.

I see the whole process as a five year project with empathises on junior golf, beginner golf, membership growth, an indoor studio, giving the best lessons and services to the membership in Worcestershire and a modern approach to an often dated industry. I have worked with many professionals, often been in the background pulling the strings but I feel now is the time to step out of the shadows and drive it all forward with me been the face and future of a modern golf professional.

Exciting times ahead.

News from Sam

On the back of that Sam is returning from Dubai, after having the dream job in Qatar fall through he found a short term position coaching golf within schools in the lead up to The Race to Dubai finale. Sam's initial one month work visa is due to expire and rather than pay £3000 for a 12 month one has decided to come back to the UK.

Sam added "I have really enjoyed my time in Dubai with the personal highlight working with the England cricket team. The initial contract and visa I have is due to expire, I have been offered the opportunity to extend it however have decided against it. I will be back in the UK shortly and look forward to getting involved with the coaching set up at Cleobury with Rob, Amy and Dave".

Yellow Ball Results

With winter golf well and truly at Cleobury Mortimer the fun competitions have started. The yellow ball competition is a tactical competition with the added pressure of performing with the yellowball.

The format is the best two stableford scores on each hole, the yellowball rotates around each player with it counting for double points. However if lost its gone unless you buy back another with the monies going into the prize pot.

Paul Liggins, Adam Cook, Ash Cook and Matt Fairman certainly made the most of the yellow ball with everyone contributing nett pars for double points.

However a phone call on the 16th tee meant the yellowball had been lost and they needed the buy back.
Although the last three holes were average for the team they did their damage on the previous holes to finish with a huge 125 points.

Director of golf Dave Pain added:

"On paper this was a very strong team and the lads certainly stepped up, a special mention must go to Matt whos par sand save on the tough 8th of Deer Park with the yellowball gave him 8 points on his own".

Practice Area Update

Due to the installation of the road the practice area is currently closed. The net, short game area and putting green remain open as usual. Talking of the short game area… has anyone been over there recently? It is amazing how the green extension has settled in. We will be tiding up the top where the bunker was filled in the new year but currently it looks superb.

Remember tidying up your short game is the easiest way to take shots off your round!
