Good day once again from South Shropshire!

Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club has (as usual) been the place to be over the last week with so much going on. The temperatures have once again been really mild with golfers still in shorts and shirts! The forecast is for the weather to continue to hold and as the picture below shows, it is still nice and lush with great grass coverage! Exactly what you want going into the winter not wasting time marking out areas for temporary greens like some places!

Are our greens the best in the county? A lot of you seem to think so…. What are you waiting for, 01299 271112 to book a game.

Competition news

36 Hole Scratch Knockout Final

The rejuvenated Scratch Knockout saw its conclusion this week as Worcestershire County star Jack Severn took on CMGC Scratch Team Captain Tom Pain in the final. Played over 36 holes Jack and Tom started off nice and early with both players settling in to their strides straight away playing the first five holes in level par before a birdie on 6 saw Tom take a slender lead. A birdie on 18 saw Tom lead by 3 at the half way stage which he then followed with four more birdies on Foxes to move ahead and see out the match on the final 9 holes.

Tom had this to say " Firstly I'd like to congratulate Jack on what was a great match, between us we had nine birdies which shows how far our games have come along this year, on a personal note its pleasing to get my name on the trophy next to both Dave and Sam, the futures bright at CMGC with all the talent that we have coming through so I look forward to trying defend the trophy in 2016".

Smith VS Smith

The Mens Singles Knockout Final took place on a beautiful autumn day as Rich Smith took on Dave Smith at CMGC. Both players had taken some big scalps on their way to the final and both Rich and Dave arrived early to get some early practice in to help settle any nerves. Dave had already featured in one final this year losing narrowly in the Doubles Knockout Final and was determined not to finish second once again. Both players played some great golf but it was to be Dave's day as he closed out with a 5 and 4 victory.

Dave had this to say on his win: "I've been playing some great golf lately in weekly competitions and in my matches leading up to the final. After losing in the Doubles Final I felt a win was on its way with how I've been hitting the ball and how consistent my overall game has been. I couldn't fault a single part of my game today and that definitely helped me win".

Texas Scramble

With winter now here it is time for the fun competitions to take over. On Saturday a Texas Scramble was contested, some great teams were down on paper and with the conditions near perfect it was anybodies.

Peter Wright, Ash Wright, Brian Stevenson and Wayne Willis were leading much of the day with a nett 56.1. Sadly they had to settle for second place with an unbelievable score taking first place.

Club champion Sean Raybould and his team of James Martin Smith, Rich Butcher and Charlie Edwards tore the course apart with a superb net t 52.3 to win it by three clear shots. With Sean having to shoot off it was left to James Martin Smith to do the captain's duties.

"We all played our part holing some long putts and hitting some huge drives to get us in position, we now turn our attention to the yellowball next Sunday and hope to be in contention for that".

Card Sponsorship

Club member and local businessman Guy Taylor was delighted when the opportunity arose to advertise his Companies services on the scorecards. Servacrane, crane and hoist specialists and Servaheat, heating and air conditioning, already advertise on the buggies and tees and Guy jumped at the chance to advertise on the scorecards.

Guy said

"Since advertising at the golf club, we have attracted new customers which has been fantastic, so hopefully the advert on the scorecards will bring in even more new business"

Director of golf Dave Pain said:

"Guy is a great ambassador for Cleobury, he has supported and advertised at the club for a number of years and we hope this latest advert on the scorecards will let more of our members and visitors know what services Servaheat and Servacrane have to offer"

Guy can be contacted on 0121 557 4401.

Rake & Place

After carful consideration the management of CMGC have decided to introduce a new local rule for the winter. It is called the Rake and Place, we first discovered this rule at a pro am back in the summer at Moseley. Heavy rain had fallen over night so to make it fair to everyone it was introduced.

For a full on course explanation of the rule watch the minute long video by clicking on the image here =>

However in a nut shell this is it…

Your ball goes into a bunker, you mark it clean it and rake an area. You then replace your ball within 6 inches of the marker no nearer the hole.

The whole idea of this is to make it fairer and winter golf more fun.

Enjoy and any questions please speak to Dave. This is now in force in all non qualifier club competitions and general play.

Motocaddy Deal

Another week goes by and it is another deal done here at CMGC! This time it is Motocaddy, we will once again be stocking a full range of their golf bags which include some great new colour concepts on the: lite, club, pro and dry series golf bags. They are also giving their range of trollies a re-vamp making them fresher and sportier than ever.

One key piece of news though is their lithium batteries will have a significant price reduction. It is time to get rid of the old lead acid batteries and go lithium. With the new price point (TBC) is set to be very aggressive and a no brainer.
