Captains' Drive In
With Winter fast approaching we were lucky to have some Autumn sun when our new Captain' drove in to start their season in office. With Glasses of Champagne and toasts being made among our new Mens Captain Jon Gaskell, Ladies Captain Nina Foord, Seniors Captain Maurice Clarke, Junior Captain Jack Severn and our President Tom Straughton before they officially teed off as our 2015/2016 captains. All that watched saw four great drives from the captains' who were no doubt nervous in front of a large crowd.
During the competition check in we asked all players to guess the Captains' yardages and whoever had the nearest aggregate guess to the total number of yards won a prize. The total combined yardage of all 4 captains' drives was 735 yards. Mark Hobbis was the closest with a great guess of 738 yards! Just 3 yards off the actual total!
The shotgun went off at 8:45am and everybody got underway for the Texas Scramble. With some strong teams on paper it was anybody's. A big thanks to Angela Gaskell who kept everybody fed and watered as they went past the 1st on foxes and 1st on Badgers with her Delicious home baked cakes.
Everybody was keeping their scores close to their chest and not letting on to how well there score was going. The scores coming through the Pro Shop were slowly getting better and better. The Baker Boys (Ian Baker, Phil Baker, Dan Berwick & Richard Kimberlin) were the first group to shoot mid 50's with a great score of 55.6. However the two bogeys they scored would sadly cost them not just second place but also first!
A new set of PING I series irons for Bob Lucas helped steer his team to a second place finish. Bob's team consisted of Bob, John Westly, Graham Fletcher and Dean Rogers to beat the Bakers on countback with another impressive score of 55.6. It seemed they would take the title but the last card in claimed victory. The team of Mark Fish, Simon Eades, Stuart Millichip and Dave Harrison all played extremely well together to shoot an impressive score of 55, taking the outright lead.
Assistant Professional Amy Millward had this to say: "Mark and Simon can both hit big drives and with Stuart and Dave holing crucial putts it was no surprise to see such a great score."
The presentation of the Men's Trophies are awarded after the Captains' Drive In; with a buffet provided by the Club committee. All members playing in the drive in and any trophy winners plus guests are invited to stay and enjoy the buffet as well as the prize giving. It's great to see all ages collecting prizes and also great to see new winners too. Prior to the Presentation cheques were presented by Our Captain Jon and His wife Ange to the charities they had raised money for through their Rainbow Cancer Care Foundation. £5000 was presented to Cancer Research as well as £5000 to Macmillan. In total £11,000 was presented to their chosen charities, which is an amazing amount and is going to some great causes.

Jack Severn #CMGCONTOUR
Jack Severn has once again been flying the Cleobury flag this time playing at the Open Qualifier course Kedleston Park in Derbyshire, playing very long & tough, Jack was joint leading scorer for Worcestershire with a gross 77 ( nett 72) finishing joint 16th in a field of 54 of the top under 16 boys in the country.
A great achievement playing against a field of boys with the majority being 2 years older and a number of plus and scratch golfers.
Another Cleobury victory, Jack won nearest the pin (1ft 6ins) on the Austria Golf for Ryder Cup 2022 stand at the British Masters. They are sending him the new Cobra Ltd driver, out in mid November. Considering the crowds that were at the British Masters this again is a great result. You may also notice it was Cleobury's Josh Rowbotham who was also second!
New Path
Work on the path towards the first tees on Badgers and Foxes has commenced. The lorrel bush that was behind the 1st tee on Badgers has also being removed allowing people to see the tees much easier. Plus if you do happen to hit a bad one off the back tee it will not cause a lost ball! It will take a couple of weeks for it to all settle down but it will certainly improve the view.
Under Armour
Another deal done! Delighted to confirm that from March 2016 CMGC will be official stockists of Under Armour UK golf clothing. The second biggest sports brand in the world offering logo shirts from £25 and a comprehensive range of clothing as worn by Jordan Spieth and Matthew Fitzpatrick.
Exciting times ahead.
Pro-Am
The final Worcestershire Pro-Am of the year was held and Fulford Heath Golf Club it was great to see a packed field of 23 teams once again supporting the event. The conditions on the day were near perfect although the wind did get up in the afternoon. CMGC were once again out in force with three teams and the 'CMGC Hackers' managed to finish third.
A big thanks to John, Mark and Martyn for playing some great golf. Everyone contributed.
