Greetings golfers,
Where do we start this week? CMGC has once again been buzzing with activity. The greenkeepers played a masterstroke in doing the coring work last week. The sun we have been experiencing has provided huge amounts of growth, the greens look in great condition heading into the winter with a healthy grass coverage.
The momentum within the club shows no signs of slowing down, even though it is our first winter order of merit event this weekend!
As mentioned the course is looking first class and to any visitors or society organisers out there…. Going into the winter we never have temporary greens. This makes CMGC a fantastic winter destination.
Ian Dennis Memorial Day
Friends and family of the late Ian Dennis have really pulled out all the stops, with 100 people playing in a memorial golf competition for him this Saturday. Ian was a very popular figure and his family have started this golf day to raise money for a bench to go on the course in his memory.
The tee is booked from 9.30am until 12.45pm on Saturday. We do have a selection of tee times available outside of this. Please call us on 01299 271 112 to book in.
Cleobury Win Bob Osborn Trophy
A huge congratulations goes to the Cleobury Mortimer junior section who have won the Bob Osborn Trophy for the first time. Bob Osborn was one of the key figures when the West Midlands junior section was formed. Since his passing this competition sees his memory live on.
Golf courses from around the West Midlands enter three players from their club. 18 holes of stroke play golf is then played and the best two scores out of the three give an aggregate total, the lowest score wins.
Josh Rowbotham led the way for Cleobury with a gross 77 (nett 71) which put Cleobury in a great position. Josh knew if Tom Rawlings or Alex Barnes could shoot under their handicaps Cleobury would have a real chance of winning.
Tom Rawlings certainly stepped up, not only did he shoot under his handicap he shot way under with an incredible nett 61! This meant Cleobury won the trophy for the first time!
CMGC Director of Golf Dave Pain had this to say…
'This win is a fantastic result for Cleobury against some of the big hitters in the West Midlands. People forget Cleobury is a small town with a limited catchment area. We have always supported junior golf and have produced some great players in the past. A big thank you goes to Scott Severn for his inspired team selection. Josh, Alex and Tom are a credit to the club'.
A special mention must also go to Tom who won the best overall nett score with his stunning 61.

Mens Aggregate Medal
The final summer event of the year here at Cleobury Mortimer with the aggregate medal and summer order of merit all being decided.
The aggregate medal trophy is given to the player with the lowest nett score from the two nominated medal competitions. After the first one back in May Josh Rowbotham led the way with a nett 66, closely followed by John Brazier.
Some late September sunshine greeted the players and the scoring conditions were near perfect for the time of year. Andy Young found himself at the top of the leaderboard after a very impressive nett 70. Andy was however just pipped to top spot by John Brazier. John also had the lowest gross of the day on his way to a nett 69. This gave John a combined nett 139 for the aggregate tournament.
Josh Rowbotham however held his nerve and shot a nett 71 to give him a combined 137 and take home the crystal vase.
Josh had this to say:
'John is a very consistent player so I knew he would not be far away. I chipped and putted really well and used my course management to get me around. This is my second trophy of the year and I hope to work on my game this winter to get down to a four handicap'.
Special Mention
Sean Raybould shot a 71 nett which was enough for him to win the division 1 summer order of merit. Jem Jones did not have his best day but his closest rivals in division 2 order of merit could not capitalise.
Scratch Team End of Season Report
The CMGC Scratch Team has recently consolidated their place in division seven of the West Midlands scratch league, enjoying some comprehensive 7-1 home wins towards the end of the season. Our results away from home were well contested and came agonisingly close on three separate occasions going down 5-3 with many of the games decided on the eighteenth. This season has seen a total of seventeen players represent the club in these matches, which is great as a captain to have such a large pool of players to choose from. With the introduction of club champion Sean Raybould and the ever improving Jack Severn our top order is getting stronger and stronger which I feel will give us a great chance of promotion next year.
The team spirit from everyone is certainly the best it has ever been since I took over and competition for places in the eight-man team has meant everyone has worked hard on their game just to make the team.
As we move forward we now have the Droitwich Shield to look forward to which is a county scratch competition before we start preparing for the 2016 league season.
I would once again like to thank everyone who has played and everyone who has given us support and encouragement throughout the season, it is greatly appreciated and drives us on in our matches.

Doubles Knockout
A busy week was topped of with the doubles knockout final being played between two fantastic partnerships.
Dave Smith and Bryan Colley V's Wayne Poulton and Paul Mitchell.
Both pairings had got through some very tough matches to reach the final and on current form it could have been anyone's. However Paul and Wayne from the start took control and did not let Dave or Bryan into the match. They eventually went out winners 4 and 2.
Paul had this to say 'Every round we went is as under dogs but that played into our hands, Wayne and myself are experienced players and pulled on this experience to see us home'.
Captains Drive In
Saturday 17th October
8.45am shot gun start
The club captains put so much time in at the club and once a year they tee off the first of Badgers Sett to start their year in office. To celebrate this we have a 18 hole texas scramble with men, ladies and seniors all welcome to play.
After the event the club committee are putting up a two course buffet for all. The Club Captain then presents all the trophy's to the 2015 winners along with their whiskey tumblers. Trophy winners are welcome to bring friends and family to celebrate the occasions and enjoy the food.
Trophy winners will soon be receiving a letter of invitation, however I urge as many members as possible to support the captains and play in the Drive In.
We have confirmed some social events which are already filling up! Get the dates in your diaries!
