Hello once again from the one and only Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club!
It has been another action packed week with September turning into the busiest month of 2015 so far! A big thank you to everyone that came along to support the end of summer cost price sale. Tom and Amy were flat out selling for 10 hours and the golf centre is now left with just the latest winter wear… Hopefully everyone got the bargain they were looking for.
Although the weather has been great in the day there has certainly been a chill in the air in the mornings and evenings. For any Game of Thrones fans out there 'Winter is Coming'!
The 9th of Badgers early on the weekend.
John Lacey Memorial Texas Scramble
112 golfers from across the West Midlands came to Cleobury Mortimer to contest a Texas Scramble competition for a club legend. The late great John Lacey was a founder member and past captain of the club and was key advisor in the early foundation of the club. This competition is now held each year in his memory for all the work he did for the club.
Conditions on the day were superb with glorious sunshine on show after some early morning mist cleared. The course was prepared to perfection with the greens and fairways in particular looking beautiful.
Club veteran Bob Lucas and his team were always going to be in the mix and finished fourth with 58.3. They just pipped The Cooper family from West Bromwich who finished fifth. Club champion Sean Raybould and his team were playing great golf and finished third with a 56.6.
Local sporting icon Craig Shorter and his team made a mockery of the front nine with a host of birdies. However a par on the last hole rather than a birdie meant they had to settle for second place.
The day however belonged to the students of CMGC. Charlie Edwards, Harry King, Alex Barnes and team captain Josh Rowbotham. The lads finished with a host of birdies to post 55.4 which was enough to give them victory and take home the prizes and trophy.
Captain Josh had this to say
"We often play in these events together as we know each others games inside out. Harry King was the stand out performer with some long drives and great putting when we really needed it. It is an honour to win this great competition in Mr Lacey's memory."
Men's Stableford - SJ The Back Count Hero
The magic score in Sunday's stableford was 38. With the top three scores all shooting 38 points, it was left to Deer Park's countback to determine the standings. Jem Jones picked up precious order of merit points in third place. Graham Butcher is also back in form and sees his handicap cut to take second place.
The day however belonged to Simon Johnson, a fantastic 20 points around Deer Park including a birdie on the last gave Simon victory on count back.
Simon had this to say…
'It has not been a vintage year for me on the course, I am just happy to be back playing to my handicap, and I look forward to the winter events'.
Sam Reminder
Just a reminder from Sam, any outstanding golf lessons please book in. It is not long now until he heads off to Qatar.
We have his diary in the golf centre simple call 01299 271 112 to book in.
Short Game Area
The development of the short game area is now really taking shape. The whole golf centre team have got involved with the development and research of the area to make it into the best short game area in the county. With Sam and Rob Grier's professional input and the view of a top amateur in Tom and experienced campaigners Matt and Amy we all feel the area is set to take shape.
The green extension has been marked out and as the photos show the green will be at least twice as big as the original design. The key concept that we wanted to improve on was a wider selection of shots and a more realistic on course shot situation. That is why the right hand bunker has been filled in. It will allow for longer chip and run shots but also allow the green to be cut in a more realistic way.
We all know the success of a round is determined on the short game whether it is a putt held or an important up and down from off the green. Although it will take until next year to get the area up to scratch the foundations have been laid…. Never a dull moment here at Cleobury we are always looking to improve.

Shropshire Alliances
Team CMGC are back in the Shropshire and Herefordshire alliances. We have already had an extremely high demand for entries. If anyone would like to play in any of these dates please get in touch as all the teams are close to filling up.
We only have one rule for when we go on tour….. To wear a CMGC logo top to show people who we are!
The dates are as follows:
- Wednesday 18th November - Hawkstone Park (Old Course)
- Thursday 10th December - Kington - Sadly it is our Christmas Open that day so Dave, Tom and Amy cannot go. However if anyone would like to represent the club and put a team in please let us know. - Thursday 17th December - CMGC - Home Advantage
Coring
The essential winter maintenance program is now 90% done. Just a light dressing is needed on a couple of the bigger greens next week. The greenkeepers worked wonders in really tough condition with the weather wetter than expected.
The greens are hollow cored for three key reason, relieve compaction, improve drainage and to remove thatch.
This video here shows how they are cored.

As you can imagine with a whole green full of cores it can be a really long process to remove them. That was until we hired the Wiedenmann core recycler. This fantastic bit of equipment literally acted like a hoover and sucked the cores up off the green. Once full it was then emptied into a trailer and used on other parts of the course (in this case the development of the short game area).
These two videos show it in action.

By dong this it is one of the key reasons why we never have temporary greens here at Cleobury. It gets them in prime condition for the winter season. The top dressing is on the greens to replace the removed cores, this will give a smoother more consistent putting surface.
