Greetings from Cleobury Golf
Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club - Director of Golf

Good day once again from the one and only CMGC!

It has been a mixed bag of weather this week with sunshine, showers and near Baltic storms! Thankfully in-between some great golf has been played and the course has stood up to the challenge. The grass is now very lush making it ideal to take big chunky divots off the fairways whilst creating plenty of spin on the greens.

Lots to report this week (as usual). As always anything you the members and friends of CMGC need please do not hesitate to contact us.

Don't forget the Mixed Open is this bank holiday Monday! We still have some tee times available for anyone that would like to play please contact us here.

Update From Amy

On Thursday I (Amy) attended an induction to the PGA course outlining nearly everything I needed to know about my foundation course and what was to be expected of me by the PGA as I go forward with my training to become a PGA professional. It was a very exciting stage and one step closer to my dream. The day involved 3 talks from 3 different PGA members who look after 3 different areas of the PGA association. It was an early start in order to get to the Training Academy which is based at The Belfry.

I gained valuable information and meant that I can now fill out my contract and become an assistant Professional learning the trade here at CMGC. The course is 3 years and I will learn to cover all aspects of the golf industry. I feel extremely lucky to have CMGC as my placement where I know I will receive help from Graham, Dave, Sam, Rob and Tom whenever I need it. Looking ahead I can't wait to be a fully qualified PGA professional and continue to enhance my skill set as I try to achieve all possible levels in the PGA.

Captain's Away Day at The Herefordshire

Club Captain Jon Gaskell took an incredible 52 players to The Herefordshire for the 2015 Captain's Away Day on Friday 21st August. In the run up to the day Jon and his wife, Ange were busy collecting prizes and organising the final touches to make sure the day ran like a well oiled machine.

With CMGC Assistant Amy helping on the check in desk, Captain Jon Gaskell as tee starter and CMGC Professional Sam Pain and Vice Captain Dave Moore, leading the way the day got underway, with all sections of the club supporting the day there was a good mix of Gents, Seniors, Ladies, Juniors and a few CMCG staff members included.

The Herefordshire for some that haven't played it before is an extremely challenging but rewarding course with a few blind tee shots but also gives you the opportunity to make some birdies with short par 4's, which many of our members took advantage of . One of the early starters Mike Wood, made use of the contours of the course and shot an impressive score of 38 points but he was to be outdone by Andy Johnson who got off to a slow start with just 14 points on the front nine Andy made good use of the shorter holes on the back nine to record a fantastic 38 points total, just pipping Mike on count back. Deborah Fearnley, fresh off a lesson with Sam and playing some great golf took home the trophy for best lady and Josh Rowbotham who is in a rich vein of form took the trophy for best junior score.

The big mystery behind the day was the hidden team draw; as we had secretly redrawn the names to create hidden teams who would all work towards the team prize. This had a big effect on everyone as they didn't want to let their 'unknown' playing partners down. The winning hidden team was Paul Liggins, Josh Rowbotham, Mark Southall and Doug Stokes who all played some very consistent golf.

It was great to see such a buzz on the tees, greens and in the clubhous, with all the members and everyone enjoying themselves. With lots of prizes up for grabs with nearest the pins and longest drives scattered around the course they was plenty of opportunities for members to grab a prize and take away a souvenir from the away day.

A big thanks to all the members who supported the day, John, Ange, Dave and all the CMGC staff who helped organise the day.

Captain's Away Day results:

Best Gent: Andy Johnson 38 points (24 points on B9)

Best Lady: Deborah Fearnley

Best Senior: Mike Wood 38 points (20 points on back 9)

Best Junior: Josh Rowbotham

Best Guest: Doug Stokes

Best Hidden Team: Doug Stokes, Mark Southall, Paul Liggins and Josh Rowbotham.

Competition news

Another Title Added To Jack's CV

Jack Severn is now the County Under 14 Champion, with a round of 74 Gross on Monday 24th August at Habberley Golf Club, Jack won by 3 shots.

A small, but select field of U14 golfers from across Worcestershire, assembled at Habberley G.C. for the County Championship. The weather forecast threatened heavy rain, however, the players were fully prepared, showed little concern and were up for the challenge.

Habberely G.C. staff  pulled together to ensure that the course was in good condition for the Championships and the boys seemed to like the greens, with many long range, single putts being holed throughout the day.

John Birch Memorial

It was a race against time for the Cleobury members in the John Birch Memorial Stableford. Sunshine and warm temperatures greeted the morning players but with heavy storms due in at 1pm it certainly favoured the quicker players.

Gordon Moriaty was cruising after 9 holes with a very impressive 23 points, however the storms hit with four holes to play. Gordon kept it together to finish with 40 points and take second place.

Two players who must of missed the weather forecast where Josh Rowbotham and Paul Jones who teed off later in the day. This was a great duel with both players getting caught in the rain but still playing some stunning golf.

After 9 holes Josh was one under gross and Paul 2 under. The weather however got worse and worse and in the end both players also had 40 points.

With the scores added up Paul finished an agonising third on count back whilst Josh pipped Gordon to take top spot and the trophy.

With the win secured Josh had this to say:

'It was very tough out there today with the weather getting worse as the round went on, luckily my score around Badgers Sett gave me some shots to play with on the back nine. It was also my first competitive round with my new PING i clubs that professional Rob Grier fitted me for. They made a huge difference with my distances increasing across all irons'.

Professional Rob Grier added:

'Josh came to me seeking an upgrade on some very old PING irons, he has a very smooth and powerful swing adding a stiffer shaft and tweaking the lie angle we were able to get him on average 15 yards more distance per iron which is huge. It will only be a matter of time before he is a category one golfer'.

Handicap Team & Scratch Team Update

Both the handicap and scratch teams finished their home campaigns with victories this past week. The win for the scratch team all but confirms their status in the in the league for next season after four wins in a row.

The handicap team also narrowly beat Perdiswell 3.5 - 2.5 with the result hinging on the last group on the course. Captain Guy Taylor and the inform Andy Johnson found themselves five down with six holes to play. However with a host of birdies they found themselves one down on the last tee. Captain Guy held his nerve to hole a six foot putt to win the hole and halve the match and give the team victory. They now head to Perdiswell away for their last game of the season.
