Greetings from Cleobury Golf | Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club - Director of Golf | Hello once again from the one and only CMGC!
What a week it has been not only for us out playing but also coming back home to watch the worlds best tear up Whistling Straights. It was great to see Jason Day claim his maiden major victory after being so close in the past. He is a real talent and we are all sure this is the first of many. CMGC has also been a hub of activity with (as normal) loads going on. The Weekend Medal once again had over 50 entries which shows just how great the membership is at the moment with so many wanting to play competitive golf and seek to improve their handicap.
The picture below was taken at 6.45am on Foxes Run, pictures like this make us realise what paradise is in South Shropshire.
PGA Championship Sweepstake
It's hard to believe that the fourth and final Major of the year has already finished, with the worlds best golfers competing at Whistling Straits in the 2015 PGA Championship. With birdies flying in all over the course, Jason Day headed in to the last round with the lead over a chasing pack that included Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose.
In our PGA Sweep it was Alan Hall who picked out Jason Day and any signs of a nervy start were cast aside with an almost flawless front 9 which meant that not even the hugely talented Spieth could get to within striking distance. As Day was cruising to his first major victory, Alan Hall was left celebrating winning himself a Srixon Z Star Tour stand bag (RRP £99.99), a dozen Srixon Z Stars (RRP £40.00) and some Stuburt Spikeless golf shoes (RRP £39.99). Bob Barlow finished second with Jordan Spieth, Paul Liggins third with Branden Grace and Jack Severn fourth with Justin Rose. John Poole also picked up a prize for the player who was in last place after two rounds.
A big thank you to everyone who supported the sweep as our attention now turns to our own Mens Club Championship in a few weeks time, should we run a sweep for this? Answers on a postcard!
Motocaddy Winner
A big well done to Mike James who put his money where his mouth in and purchased a Motocaddy S1 on our final money back special. With Jason Day winning the PGA championship Mike gets all of his £299.99 back in a golf centre voucher. Everyone has seemed to of really enjoyed these, we shall certainly be doing them again in 2016.
Club Championships
The 2015 Club Championship is fast approaching. Taking place on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th of September. This is the biggest competition of the year that everyone wants to win! Saturday tee times are drawn and Sunday tee times are put together in handicap order. Entry is £10 for the two days with a heap of prizes up for grabs. The closing date to get your names down is 12 noon on Thursday 3rd September after that it will be closed. To enter please visit the golf centre or call us on 01299 271 112.
More Course Improvements
The greenkeepers have once again been hard at work adding more drainage on the third of Deer Park and the fourth of Foxes Run. The drains are dug half a metre deep and filled with gravel to help ease away the surface water. We are all very hopeful this will help the course in the winter months.
The winter tee on the seventh of Deer Park and also the winter tee on the seventh of Foxes (pictured) have also been extended. Again great work from the lads in trying to get the course playable all year round. This has resulted in some of the nine holes being closed mid week whilst the work has been completed for health and safety reasons. We appreciate everyone's co-operation in this and the forward thinking for a better golf course.
Rob the course superintendent has asked me to reiterate… Please repairs pitch marks and rake bunkers.
Men's London Pride Medal
The summer season is in full flow at Cleobury with over 50 players contesting the Saturday Medal sponsored by London Pride. They kindly donate a case of their beer to the winner. Played over the tough combination of Deer Park and Foxes Run a tactical round was going to be key.
Sean Raybould has adapted to Cleobury life well since he joined in April. A nice gross 72 for a nett 68 was enough for him to take 3rd place.
Colin Hopewell, one of the clubs most consistent players once again produced an under par score with a nett 66 but was just pipped to top spot on countback by Jack Severn. Jack still only 14 and now a county under 18's regular recorded the lowest gross of the weekend, a two over 71 to also give him a nett 66 but a superior back nine gave him top spot.
Resident professional Sam Pain had this to say on Jack's victory.
'Jack is playing some great golf at the moment, his involvment in county events, county matches and scratch matches have seen him raise his game over the last 12 months, his course management for such a young player rarely sees him in trouble and with such a sharp short game you know he's got a lot of birdies in him'

Seniors Away Day
The amount of green acres opposite The Hawthorns football stadium comes as a surprise. A slightly bigger surprise is the degree of golfing difficulty associated with those green acres...... Sandwell Golf Club!
Senior Captain, Colin Onions, chose Sandwell for his Away Day event for a variety of non golfing nostalgic reasons. It was the land of his long lost youth. Some 27 CMGC Seniors joined him on his nostalgic trip. 27 golfers v The Course; the course won!
Yoshi Oyama managed to negotiate with the course to claim first prize with 32 points. Bob Westwood ( who had played the course a few times ) came second with 31 and Mike Wood third with 30 points. Others would rather not reveal their scores!
Colin can claim the best performance of the day however, in raising nearly £700 for his charity, the Acorns Children's Hospice. Well done Captain.
John Lacey Texas Scramble
Saturday 19th September is the John Lacey Memorial Texas Scramble Open. Last year 34 teams entered. We are currently up to 20 and expect this to easily surpass the 30 mark. Entry fee is £10 to CMGC members and £15 to visitors per person. The prize pot in this event is always great with such a large entry. Enter your teams in the golf centre, calling us on 01299 271 112 or emailing pro@cleoburygolfclub.com.
Junior Club Championships
On Monday 17th August the Juniors of Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club battled it out over 27 holes for the opportunity to become the 2015 Junior Club Champion. After a steady first nine holes over Foxes, Charlie Edwards took control of the competition with a fantastic 1 under par gross around Badgers Sett with the favourite for the title, Jack Severn, just a couple of shots behind. As the juniors plotted their way around Deer Park it was some crucial pars on the home stretch from Jack Severn, which enabled him to see out the round and claim the title.
A delighted Jack, who is edging closer and closer to getting his handicap down to 4 is certainly one of the favourites for the Men's title in just a few weeks time. Charlie Edwards took the nett title and has seen his handicap reduced to 6.8, again one to watch for the Men's title. Pictured here are the winners. |
Have a great golfing week and we hope to see you at CMGC very soon. Dave, Matt, Amy and Team CMGC |

| It's really positive that we're getting more of you to think harder about the ball you play; not just that, understanding the differences between models. A closer look at Srixon's Z-STAR shows it performs best with driver swing speeds betweeen 90 and 105mph. Why? Watch our video... |
| Many of you will have seen how effective the R15 was for Jason Day at Whistling Straits. Despite being long, no doubt the Australian has his big stick dialled in for his game. For amateur golfers this is even more important. Speak to us about custom fitting and help with your adjustability options. |
