Greetings from Cleobury Golf
Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club - Director of Golf

Hello once again from the one and only CMGC!

This week can only be described as manic! We have had a European Tour Professional playing the course, just the casual seven birdies around Badgers Sett & Deer Park but finished just three under. James Busby knows both Rob Grier and Sam Pain really well and came for a round and loved the course.

Don't forget it is Presidents Day (Medal) this weekend, a Cleobury major, not to be missed.

This weeks newsletter is a big one so sit back relax and enjoy all the happenings from one of the thriving clubs in the West Midlands.

Course news

The greenkeepers and local JCB contractor Phil Price have been busy on Foxes Run. Phil has dug out a drainage ditch along the tree line on the fifth of Foxes Run. The plan is to now run drains across the hole into the ditch ready for the winter. The top end of the course is one of the wettest points on the course which is very strange as it is the highest point!

We are hopeful that the additional drainage will transform the 5th and 6th teeing areas. The waste soil has also been moulded around the back of the green as pictured.

Tips from the team

US PGA Predictions

It is the final Major of the season and the last chance to win some money off our predictions. Remember use a bookmaker that offers top 6 placing on each way bets!

Dave

Rickie Fowler - 20/1

This lad is on fire at the moment, his last three tournaments he has has won and finished second twice. With Rory a big doubt the stage is set for Rickie to step up and take his first major.

Marc Leishman - 80/1 each way

A fantastic display at the open, I am hopeful the play off loss has not affected him too much at 80/1 he is a great price for a top 6 finish.

Sam

Dustin Johnson - 10/1

This guy is due a major soon! Keeps getting into contention. And I think we can all remember 2010 and what happened to him. Hopefully he reads the local rules this time!!

Zach Johnson - 40/1 each way

Obviously in great form and high on confidence after his win at the open! Finished 3rd in 2010 last time the PGA was at whistling straits.

Amy

Jordan Spieth - 5/1

Showing great form in all competitions with 2 majors already this year and just missing out on a play off place in the open. He's the one to watch.

Martin Kaymer -35/1 each way

He is my each way bet. He won the U.S. PGA championships in 2010 when it was last held at whistling straits. He knows how to win on the course and could do it again!

Tom

Adam Scott- 18/1

With such a text book swing Adam Scott is always going to be near the top of the leaderboard. As we all know Steve Williams will once again be on his bag offering 15 Major wins worth of experience. A tied fourth finish at the US Open and if he had played the last 5 holes in level par at St Andrews he would have made it a four man playoff and possibly a second major victory.

Hideki Matsuyama- 45/ 1

Currently 15th in the world rankings and 17th in the Fed Ex Cup standings shows his consistent performances this year. A fifth place finish in the Masters backed up by top twenty finishes in the US Open and British Open are signs he's ready to compete at the top. At just 23 years of age I can see him competing with the likes of Spieth, McIlroy and Fowler for all the big tournaments now and in years to come. At 45/1 I think he's great value for an each way bet.

Men's Invitation Results

The members of Cleobury were once again out in force to support the invitation. This competition allowed members to bring guest for the Texas Scramble Competition.

Some great teams were out on paper with the return of the Pringle brothers and the winning teams from the previous two team competition out playing. Conditions on the day were perfect with light winds and sunshine greeting the golfers.

Many teams thought the magic number to win was a nett 55. The team of Trow, Trow JNR, Annetts and Westwood got to 56 which was enough to give them second place despite some problems on the 5th of deer park with a runaway trolley resulting in a bogey.

The day was won by a new team formed late on, brothers Jason and Paul Bowers joined Steve Howe and Mark Hobbis. Together they played some stunning golf to finish on 54.3 to win.

Jason added "we played great together and held putts at the right time".

Professional Sam Pain had this to say on their win.

"The lads played some great golf, that is a very good score. This format suits good putters and Paul's recent purchase of a Scotty Cameron is certainly paying off".

Nearest the pin winners - Ross Moorecroft and Johnson SNR.

Junior news

Junior Open

The first junior open returned to Cleobury for the first time in ten years on Monday. Some of the best young talent in the West Midlands descended to CMGC

The greenkeepers got the course in prime condition with the greens fast and true. There were only 4 players who finished under their handicap.

The day however belonged to Connor McNeil who shot a stunning nett 65 around Badgers and Deer to win by five shots. Connor has played Cleobury many times and is a member of Burghill Valley he added "I love playing Cleobury as the lay out is similar to Burghill, thank you to everyone for playing and making it a great event".

Pictured is Connor and Dave after his win.
