Greetings from Cleobury Golf
Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club - Director of Golf

Hello once again from the one and only CMGC!

Another week of the season passes us by (I cannot believe it is mid July already). The course has been nice and busy and we have once again been receiving some great feedback.

As mentioned many times we try to offer a warm welcome to everyone at CMGC and make your leisure time as fun a possible! Please click here to view a recent review from golfshake.

The Open is just around the corner and to go with our fantastic golf centre specials we have decided to make you some money.

The Open Tips

Tom

Louis Oosthuizen- 22-1

A fairly obvious and popular choice as the man won The Open in 2010 at St Andrews. Oosthuizen was just a shot behind Jordan Spieth at the US Open even after a first day 77. Oosthuizen also shot -10 and -4 over the weekend at St Andrews in the 2014 Dunhill Links so certainly knows how to score well.

Outside Chance- Tommy Fleetwood. 70-1

Talented young Englishmen whose name you regularly see towards the top of the leader board on the European Tour. Like Louis, Tommy shot well at St Andrews in the 2014 Dunhill Links. Word of warning though as my good friend Harry Edwards informs me that if the weather forecast is right, then he might be on the wrong side of the draw!

Sam

Dustin Johnson- 12-1

Showed great form in the US open, I have no reason to think he will not continue that form for St. Andrews he is long enough to go very low.

Luke Donald- 90-1

A good outside bet, starting to show some form with 2 top 10s in his last 2 starts, and 4 rounds in the 60s at Gullane last week, shows he can hold it together on the links!

Amy

Jordon Speith 6-1 - to win

In top form, already taken the first 2 majors of the year and won so well in the John Deere tournament just gone. I can see him doing the grand slam.

Ian Poulter 91-1

has been so close so many times in the majors I believe the one major he can win is the Open. Certainly worth a bet for a top 6 finish.

Dave

Rickie Fowler 19-1 to win - he loves the links!

Second place in the Open last year and won the Scottish Open last week. Rickie hits it miles off the tee and a great putter he won't be far away!

Zach Johnson 101-1

Played solid in the John Deere last weekend, although the conditions are totally different he is known to like the links. A very generous price for a player of his ability certainly worth a go.

Rob

Bubba Watson 42-1

Just the one pick for me as im that confident in him! Bubba has gone under the radar and playing down his chances. He has the imagination and shots to really score well at St Andrews, get your money on the nose for Bubba!

Rainbow Cancer Day

What a day last Friday was for the Rainbow Foundation Charity Golf Day. Over 130 people played in the event from all over the West Midlands to make it such a success. CMGC club Captain Jon Gaskell and his wife Ange plus their team of helpers put on a great event from start to finish.

Jon sent us this message

A great big thank you to everyone who supported our Rainbow Cancer Care Foundation Golf Day, we hope you had a great time and enjoyed it as much as we did, it was good to see so many Cleobury Members supporting us on our special day, also thank you to our Rainbow Team who are awesome and a special mention to Maz and Sue for all your help with raffle ticket and cake sales which were a great success. We look forward to seeing you all again next year, Our next charity event is at Brampton Golf, Madley, Hereford on the 25th/26th/27th September which is a great fun event with lots of prizes, also we will be arranging a night golf event at Cleobury Mortimer on the 23rd October (to be confirmed), Once again thanks everyone one for your fantastic support.

Ange sent us this message

What a fantastic day it was too. All our hard work paid off and on the first count we have raised so far £7705, still awaiting more sponsorship to come in so will keep you posted. Jon and I worked really hard to make this event special for everyone, but on the day it's also down to our crew of Kelly and Ash, Carol and Dave, Angie and Gary and Phil and Kevin who support us year on year. Our new adopted children!! Clare and Martin have also done a sterling job this weekend along with our lady members Maz and Sue who did a brilliant job on the raffle, if they didn't get you on the way in then they secured the doors till the tickets were sold Ha! Ha! Thank you ladies your already booked for next year!

Kelly Whitehouse
and Victoria Roberts of Macmillan and CRUK, my lifeline. Cake sales sored with these two gorgeous ladies behind the counter. A BIG THANK YOU as always goes to the CMGC management, pro shop, bar and kitchen staff and green keepers your all brilliant. Last but not least, to all family, friends and members who took part, without you it would not work. Such a boost to see so many happy, smiling faces. Well done to all. A monumental effort from everyone to make so much money on just one day.

Pros' Day

Pros' Day is this Saturday! Entries are filling up and the prizes from Titleist are arriving. We have also secured another sponsor for the day…. Oldfields Cider made locally, each entrant will get a half pint of this lovely cider after their round.

The ciders are made entirely from freshly pressed apples picked from orchards in and around Geoff Thompson's (who plays at CMGC) farm at Oldfields in the Teme Valley near Tenbury Wells in Worcestershire. Geoff, who has also been supplying hops to Hobsons Brewery for around 20 years, works closely with the brewers to make ciders which are clean, bright, and full of fresh apple flavour.

Pros' Day is a Texas Am event and members are welcome to bring guests to play in the event. Please phone or email us to get your slot booked in.

Rake Sponsorship

A big thank you to CMGC member Paul Mitchell, of Lloyds Garage in Stourport who has agreed to sponsor the new rakes for the bunkers.

Seve Stableford

Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club once again paid tribute to the late great Seve Ballesteros holding the annual Stableford competition in his memory. Conditions on the day certainly favoured the early starters with the wind getting up in the afternoon. Dave Smith continued his fine form with a steady 38 points to finish third. James Martin Smith also finished well to record 38 points but a superior back count gave him second place outright.

The day however belonged to John Haywood who played some great golf in his way to 40 points, winning by two. Resident professional Sam Pain had this to say on John's victory. 'Looking back at the records John actually won this competition back in 2012, he consistently performs in the seniors section and I am delighted for him to get the win and pick up the trophy'.

Pictured is John after his win.

Final standings

1st - John Haywood - 40 points
2nd - James Martin Smith - 38 points
3rd - Dave Smith - 38 points

Nearest the pin 2nd Badgers - Andy Johnson

Junior Team

Fantastic 3-1 win for the CMGC juniors against a very talented Worcester team. Great to see the next generation playing in the team with the older lads.

The team go away to Worcester on Sunday in a must win game to stand any chance of going through the tough group stages. Best of luck team.

Guess the Hole

Last weeks had you all fooled! Just two people got it correct, and Josh Rowbotham's name was picked out of hat.

Josh please speak to Dave regarding your prize. Here is the picture that fooled so many of you… it was the first of Badgers Sett.

This week's is for a Stuburt glove, please contact us here with your name, glove size and guess. Good Luck!
