Greetings from Cleobury Golf
Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club - Director of Golf

Hello once again from the one and only CMGC, the West Midlands Premier 27 hole golf facility that is full of life and absolutely buzzing at the moment!

It has been a mammoth week here with some great weather, great times and even better golf being played. I hope you all had a flutter on the US Open using the tips we provided…. Unless you listened to Tom's then you would be in trouble! Although it was a late finish we were all gripped to it. The course got a lot of abuse from the players etc but it proved to hold its own with such a tight finish. I could not believe my eyes when DJ 3 putted from 12 foot on the 18th to hand it to Spieth. Back to back majors. This lad is a huge talent and we cannot wait to see him and Rory go head to head at The Open in a couple of weeks time.

Sweep Results

Congratulations to Jordan Spieth who won his second major at the US Open on Sunday.

Jordan SpiethJordan's win sees CMGC member Ian Downes claim the top prize in our sweep, Ian takes home one of our very fashionable FootJoy chill outs, a FootJoy polo top, some FootJoy shorts and a pair of FootJoy socks to complete the outfit.

2nd Place - Louis Oosthuizen (on count back) D. Carpenter
3rd Place - Dustin Johnson - J. Carpenter
4th Place - Adam Scott (on count back) A. Winnall
Last Place - Darren Clarke - D Carpenter

Prizes can be collected from the golf centre. Thanks to everyone who entered. Our next one will be for The Open, details announced shortly.

Captains Weekend

Club Captain Jon Gaskell welcomed over 220 players to his Captains weekend. Starting on Friday with the senior's section competition Mel Kingston was victorious with 41 points. Friday night then saw Cleobury host their first ever night golf tournament with nine holes lit up using glow sticks!

Youngster Tom Rawlings won the nine hole junior competition with 22 points and Amy Millward took home the ladies section prize with an impressive 37 points to see her handicap cut to 5. The competition that everyone wanted to get their hands on was the Captains Cup one of the four Cleobury majors and the first of the year up for grabs.

The event took place on Saturday over Badgers Sett and Deer Park for an 18 hole medal. The conditions on the day were fantastic with the green keepers getting the course prepared to perfection.

Stuart Humphries recorded the lowest gross of the weekend with a 73 to give him a nett 67. Stuart's round could have been better as he shot seven birdies but double bogeys on 10 and 11 cost him. Paul Liggins continued his impressive summer form on his way to a nett 66. Jamie Fearnley who has been knocking on the door of a good score for some time now finally delivered a 65, however even that was not enough to take home the cup!

Jem Jones made a mockery of the medal format to shot an incredible nett 60 and sees his handicap slashed. Jem has had some time away from golf to concentrate on exams but came back swinging with this score.

Resident PGA Professional Sam Pain had this to say,

"The scores from the weekend were superb and a true testament to the practice and preparation the player put in. I actually played with Jamie in the night golf tournament. He hits it great and it was no surprise to see him up there. Jem Jones though has had many second place finishes I am delighted he got the win he was craving, he has real talent, mark my words he has plenty more wins left in him this season".

A Message From Jon Gaskell,

"Well I would just like to thank all the wonderful members of Cleobury Mortimer Golf (Ladies, Seniors, Juniors and Men's sections) who supported me so well on my first Captains weekend, also to the Management and staff for there help and encouragement throughout the weekend, and what a weekend it was, we were blessed with wonderful weather throughout the weekend, the first ever Night Golf at Cleobury was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone took part and to see the clubhouse bursting at the seams at 2am in the morning was amazing experience, well done to Jem Jones on winning the Captains Cup with an amazing score of 60 nett, All the money raised over the weekend will be donated to my chosen charity The Rainbow Cancer Care Foundation. And finally the biggest thank you of all to my wonderful wife Ang who always backs me completely in everything I do, Thank you all so much, John Gaskell (Club Captain)"

Hole In One Alert

Big well done to Eddie Gardner (pictured below) who had a hole in one on the 2nd of Badgers Sett in the Captains Weekend seniors competition. Eddie hit a crisp 5 iron and saw it in all the way. Well played.

24 Hours Golf Challenge

A special mention to Dave Harrison, Harvey Dodd and Ian Orme who competed the 24 hours golf challenge. The lads started at 9am on Friday and battled through. They did a fantastic job in setting up and organising the night golf.

Badgers Sett was set out amazingly well especially the 6th. I did try to take pictures but they did not come out or do them justice. I cannot wait for the next one already!

Finally a big well done to the 20 people that did the McMillian 72 hole challenge across the weekend.

Cleobury Team Challenge Results

Sunday 14th June hosted a brand new competition "Cleobury Team Challenge" which was aimed to integrate all the club sections which include Scratch, Handicap, seniors, Ladies and the Junior Team. The format of the day was Betterball Stableford with each team naming 8 players and then dividing their team into 4 pairings.

Even though it was a friendly competition, there always has to be a winner and this time the SENIORS stormed to success with fantastic scores of 46, 46, 44 and 41 being recorded making a total of 177! Taking the lead by 10 points to the Scratch team who came 2nd with 167. These are fantastic scores and shows that Betterball stableford certainly suits the seniors game. Included in the competition was a prize for the pairing with the best stableford points score, which went to Senior Pairing of Garry Hawes and Keith Gardner with 46 points who scooped it on back count. Well Done Gents!

The competition overall was a great success and we hope to continue this and make it an annual event every year. A massive thank you to all the captains for organising their teams, Amy for organising the competition and all the members who were involved in making it such an enjoyable day.

Guess The Hole

A big well done to everyone that guessed the correct hole in the roll over from last week. It was still a tough one though with one 4 people getting it! It was the 1st of Badgers Sett. The winner picked out at random was Paul Liggins. Paul please contact Dave and he will sort you the glove and balls.

This weeks is below, as normal please contact us here with your answer of which hole we are on!
The winner will get their driver and a wood re gripped with the fantastic black widow multi compound grips.

Message from Management
Ian Dennis
It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Mr Ian Dennis

Ian had not been a member of Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club for very many years but had embraced club life and played in many club competitions with his son Paul and their many friends. I

Ian died on 23rd June after a short fight against cancer aged only 47 years. We send our sympathies to his family from all at CMGC.
