Welcome once again to the latest instalment of news from the one and only CMGC!
Although we are now in June it has felt more like October with the cold weather. Promises of a heat wave have made the last few days more bearable though! The one positive from the weather has meant the course has stayed very green. The grass is starting to grow like crazy, the greens are cut at least once a day, the fairways, tees and surrounds every other day and the rough is the never ending job, once you finish you start again! As always fantastic effort from the lads for maintaining our beautiful course.

Midlands Schools Championships
Another winning week for Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club's Emily Price. During 23rd-24th May Emily played for England who played against Spain at Seacroft Golf Club on the Lincolnshire Coast. The Championship Link Course was in great shape and the strong sea winds were in full force. Emily played extremely well finishing under par for all four rounds and winning 3 of her 4 matches. This makes her England performance record 8 out of 9 wins during the last 9 months.
England's performance coaches were extremely happy with Emily's play. Then the following Friday 29th May she secured her 2nd consecutive U18'S Schools Regional Championship title on home soil at CMGC.
This is the eight Midland Counties best under 18's schools title. The weather was horrendous with torrential rain and high winds that suspended play during the first round of the 36 hole competition reducing it to 27 holes.
Emily said "on a day like today its not about winning pretty with low scores, its about getting the job done and just making sure you fight to the end. The course was in great shape. And when the weathers good as on my practice round in nice weather conditions like the previous day I shot 4 under par, but with the weather being so extreme in the competition I knew that was out of the question. I didn't get a score I was happy with but I got the win I wanted, and that is the main object from the very time you step on the first tee."
This qualifies 15 year old Emily for the Under 18's English Schools National Finals in 3 weeks time in Cambridgeshire. Along with this she already by being U18's Schools County Champion and entered for the Under 16's English Schools National Championship in Leicestershire during July.
Cleobury spokesman Dave Pain had this to say. "Everyone at Cleobury was delighted to get asked to hold the Midlands Schools Championship. This is a flagship event held at some fantastic courses over the years. I must applaud the green staff who under extreme pressure from the weather got the course in fantastic shape, a big well done to Will Davidson of Derbyshire for winning the boys and of course we are delighted that our own Emily Price once again won the girls. Everyone at the club will be cheering her on at the nationals".

AJ Claims First Stroke Play Trophy of the Year
Men's Medal and Roy Houghton Memorial Trophy.
It was trophy weekend at Cleobury Mortimer with the men's medal offering silverware to the winner. Medal conditions are always tough with the course maturing and taking no prisoners a level headed and consistent player was always going to win. Simon Eades continued his consistent form to shoot a 71 and finish third. Lee Glasby fresh from a runners up finish in the Chesterton Bank's Bowl was once again second with a 70.
The day however belonged to Andy Johnson who shot a 69 to take top spot. Andy was cruising reaching a massive seven under his handicap with five holes to play. Two triple bogeys on the par 3?s on Deer Park could have ended many players' rounds, not Andy, he got a par four on the last to take the trophy by one shot.
Resident professional Sam Pain had this to say on Andy's victory.
"It is great to see Andy winning, he supports every competition and is a great member. He got unlucky on the par 3?s on Deer Park but showed great mental strength to keep the round together, which is what medal competitions are all about".
More Success at Stone
I was like a kid (Amy) on Christmas Eve I was that excited for my full custom fitting experience at Stone. I always love going up to Stone trying all the latest clubs and having a lesson with Rob. This trip I was looking mainly for a new hybrid and 3 wood and they definitely didn't let me down.
With such a wide range of brands up there; there is always too much to choose from (PING, Mizuno, Cobra, Titleist, Callaway). Using the amazing technology of TrackMan, I was able to see so many improvements from the clubs I was trying in relation to gaining extra distance, but the technology of TrackMan also informs you of a number of important elements regularly forgotten, such as my launch angle, ball flight, ball speed, swing speed etc which allows me to focus on new areas to help improve my swing.
After a good 90 minutes Rob and I decided that, a new PING G30 Hybrid and a Mizuno JPX 850 3 Wood. These's clubs gave me the best consistency but around an extra 10 yards distance on my previously clubs. I would thoroughly recommend going to Stone as I feel it's the best fitting studio around!
For those who have not been to Stone the selection is huge as the pictures show!
