Texas AM
With the greens having their winter aeration programme, and being freshly cut and rolled, the course was in top condition. The weather staying dry encouraged new members to join in with this week's Texas AM. One thing you couldn't miss was Dave Gordon's fireworks trousers! Maybe a new John (Wild Thing) Daly in the making, if those eye popping trousers are on show each week!
This weekend's competition was open to visitors as well members. The best two stableford scores counted on each hole once the best drive had been taken. With some strong teams on paper and some new faces added into the mix, it could have been anyone's! But winning all depends on playing the right format, but for one team this week, humiliation fell upon them. Dave Moore, Gary Hingley, Bob Barlow and Alan Hall seemingly thought the competition was Texas scramble and so were ultimately disqualified. Dave Moore Vice captain found the whole mix up hilarious.
New Member Paul Brown and his team shot a great score of 94 points early, which on any other week would have won. However the team of the weekend was Dave Gordon, Graham Butcher, Eduardo Nascimento and Colin Hopewell who shot an impressive 99 points with their only misery being "we're just gutted we didn't get the 100!". The whole team played consistently throughout but with a good mix of handicaps it helped them boost their score to come out on top.

Ladies Fun Texas Scramble
This week's ladies competition was a fun Texas scramble with the teams being drawn on the day. With a good mix of handicaps in each team, there was potential for low scores to be calculated. The first team out won with a score of 70.8. The team consisted of Marilyn Wood, Ann Breakwell and Amy Millward.
Amy had this to say on the win "I really enjoyed playing with Ann and Marilyn they were great company and we motivated each other well, our short game definitely helped us score well and this probably was the deciding factor".
Cleobury March On In Daily Mail Competition
Cleobury recently took on Habberley golf club in the Daily Mail knockout. This is a national competition with regional rounds and then a final abroad. Vice-Captain Dave Moore is running the Cleobury team and had Gary Hingley, Jack Severn, Mike Wood and the Johnson brothers at his disposal for the first match. It was very tightly contested with Habberley playing really well, Gary Hingley was beaten on the last and with Jack Severn loosing Cleobury were on the ropes. The match play specialist Mike Wood won 3 & 2 and Andy Johnson also won leaving the scores tied and it all coming down to Simon's match. Now this is where it gets good….. the match went down the last, (9th of Foxes Run) with both players finding the fairway. Simon caught his approach shot a little heavy and was in the lake all day long, however a bounce and skid off the ice it made it onto the green and finished 8 foot way to give Cleobury a narrow 3 - 2 win.
Dave Moore had this to say on his team performance… 'The lads did great today in tough frozen conditions, home advantage is key, I am delighted to get the win and await the draw of the next round.
Amy - Clean the grooves of your clubs for a cleaner contact, enabling more spin and an overall better shot! A £3 grove cleaner can make all the difference.
Matt - Always read the rules of the competition, often this time of the year different rules may apply e.g. bunkers GUR. Take the time to check in early and get organised.
Sam - Check your golf spikes, if you play golf once a week you will need them changing once a year. If you look at your spikes and see the 'C' fading this is the indicator that you need them changing.
This week we welcome seniors vice captain Maurice
January/February has seen the continuation and completion of the Seniors winter eclectic competition. In spite of some inclement weather conditions a hardy average of just over 30 players have been contesting the eclectic and combined stableford competitions. In spite of the conditions, but helped by placing everywhere, and bunkers GUR, there have been some notable scores such as Bob Westwood, Dave Slater, and Chris Newman with 41 points, Mike Foord, Alan Hall and Ian Duncan with 40 points and numerous players with 36 or more points over 10 weeks of the eclectic . The final winners of the eclectic are Yoshi Oyama in division 1 and Roy Dudley in division 2.
Prior to Christmas a 3 clubs and putter competition helped to prove that decent scores do not need a full bag of clubs. Mel Kingston scoring 38 points, closely followed by Dave Hadley on 37 points and Roger Bartlett on 36 points.
It is good to see the return of our Captain, Colin Onions, from a lengthy absence due to illness and he can now see the Seniors move forward with our friendly match programme starting with Penn Golf Club towards the end of March. It is encouraging to see the numbers signing up at this early stage, so we hope for a better success rate this year.
