Mixed Winter League

The remaining dates and details for this year's Mixed Winter League;

  • 1st November 2020
  • 22nd November 2020
  • 6th December 2020
  • 10th January 2021
  • 31st January 2021
  • 14th February 2021
  • 7th March 2021
  • 21st March 2021
  • 11th April 2021

The Mixed Winter League is open to all members of the club. So although we say "Mixed" it is open to ALL men and ALL ladies; you do not need to be a married couple.

For each round, teams play for points and a small prize. It is never the same team two rounds running, so it is a great competition to get to meet and socialize with lots of different people.

Each round plays a different fun format...

Points are awarded to each member of a team from 5 points for the winning team down to one point to the team that came fifth. Less than fifth and it is NIL POI.

At the end of the season, the lady with the most points wins the ladies league and similarly, the gent with the most points, wins the Gents league.

Under normal circumstances, we would all meet up before the round to announce the teams and format etc, then after the golf, we would all stay for an informal meal that we eat together.

Unfortunately, under the current restrictions, we cannot do this so we leave it to the individual to decide if they want to eat and drink before and / or their golf

Come along and join in. You will not find a more relaxed friendly bunch of people than the Mixed Winter Leaguers.

What else happened this week?

The Captain's Cup took place on Saturday 17th October and to make it into the prizes you couldn’t afford to make too many mistakes.

In division 2 Nick Crabbe finished with 36 points thanks to an excellent birdie on the 17th to help boost his score and take third spot on countback from playing partner Mark Broughton.

Taking the second spot was Andy Roberts who could barely put a foot wrong as he cruised to 40 points. Andy made a fast start with 9 points through 3 holes and played consistently after that to produce a great round but he was to be outdone by Rich Smith. Rich, playing off 17 also shot 40 points but it was the 21 points round Deer Park with no drop shots that clinched top spot in division 2.

In division 1 shooting 36 points would only get you 9th position with Greg Shorter, John Gallagher, Stu Flello, Bob Lucas and Dave Jones all shooting under their handicap but it was Adam Winnall who clinched 3rd spot ahead of Dave and Bob on countback.

Adam, playing of 6 bounced back after a slow start by finishing strongly with 6 pars to finish on 38 points.  Grant Carbines once again showed his class as he finished with 41 points playing off 7.

A level par front 9 of 22 points put Grant in a great position which he duly backed up with 19 points on Deer with what must have felt like a winning score of 41 points. Taking top spot and the Captain's Cup was Dean Rogers who finished on an incredible 43 points playing off 8.

Dean made 4 birdies including two 2’s on his way to this fantastic score and actually played the last 6 holes on Deer Park in 18 points! Dean is very consistent playing and its great to see him pick up this big win. Dean must have also inspired his fellow PXG troop Jason Krokak who went on to win on the PGA Tour the following day!

In the Straughton Salver, Chris Perry continued her good form from the recent Club Championships by taking second spot after a strong back 9 performance round Deer Park but it was talented youngster Rosanna Halls who took top spot. Rosanna played Badgers in one under gross with nothing more than a 4 on the scorecard, add to this plenty of pars on the back 9 including a strong finish over the last 3 holes it meant Rosanna claimed the top prize whilst also seeing her handicap now cut to 2. Well played Rosanna.

Nina Foord and Chris Perry have won their second-round match of the Daily Mail Foursomes against Sapey Golf Club on 12 October 2020.

The Daily Mail Foursomes is a tournament that is now regarded as the greatest amateur golfing event with more than 190,000 players competing in their club qualifying rounds.

Many congratulations and Good Luck in the next round in 2021".
