Greetings from Cleobury Golf

Good morning from the one and only Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club. We have two great pieces of news to start the year, with new members joining the CMGC revolution. A big welcome to Lee, Paul, Mark, Ryan and, of course, not forgetting the Tenbury lads Stuart, Eduardo and Dave!

It seems like we have had every weather possible at CMGC this week rain, wind, snow, sleet and sunshine all rolled into one. Golf is a crazy sport. Just look at the difference 24 hours can make. From a nice covering snow. To dry and windy conditions. Due to the snow and rain we have now had to introduce hedgehog wheels on golf trolleys. This applies to all golfers. If you need hedgehogs we have them in the golf centre or alternatively you can rent them. Many of you know the close relationship we have with Stuburt golf as their only UK brand ambassadors. On Thursday January 29th they are going to be shooting their winter 2015 catalogue here at CMGC. Stuburt is a worldwide golf brand and to think CMGC will be pictured in this is a fantastic achievement for us. It certainly appears that CMGC is flying at the moment.

Stone Fitting Experience

As many of you know CMGC members are offered FREE fittings at the Stone Driving Range. This is where our golf coaches Rob Grier and Sam Pain spend a lot of their time. The set up they have is one of the best in the West Midlands. It is just one hour from CMGC and they have all the latest hardware from top brands such as Titleist, TaylorMade and PING. Many CMGC members have now started visiting Stone to have fittings with Rob and Sam. If you are anything like myself when it comes to purchasing high value products it is all about the experience and the trust you get from the seller. That is why Rob and Sam are so popular because they have the trust of the members and what they are telling them. It is all well and good going to American Golf etc but the staff they employ are highly incentivised by commission….. therefore you may be getting the product that suits them not you!

Below is a report from Jack Severn who went to Stone with his Dad Scott just before Christmas…

I cannot praise the experience enough; I've been up twice, once for Driver / 3 wood & then for irons as I had out grown my current set.

The trip up is well worth it, the service really excelled as it was virtually getting a free lesson as well as fitting; even though I booked an hour I was there until I was happy.

Amazing what the FlightScope numbers can tell you about your current swing & clubs, we looked at getting the correct clubs & importantly shafts, length & grip size that suited my game, looking at distance & carry comparing current set to new, the result is I have now changed from Titleist to Mizuno as the numbers showed improved ball flight, distance and accuracy. Since the fitting I've scored my best two rounds ever.

My advice if you're getting any new equipment get up there it makes sense & you may be surprised at the results & it's free.

Men's Handicap League Draw

The 2015 golfing season is fast approaching with our new Men's Handicap Captain Guy Taylor looking forward to a successful season. Guy has been keeping a close eye on the competitions in a bid to put together a strong side for the forthcoming season and has recently been enjoying some warm weather training out in Jamaica. Guy is pictured on the 5th tee at Cinnamon Hill in Jamaica and yes that's the Caribbean Sea in the background.

Guy who was in attendance for the recent Worcetsershire Handicap League Draw which pits Cleobury against Bewdley Pines, Kidderminster, Little Lakes, Ombersley and Perdiswell Park, recognises the importance of winning the home games and picking up as many points as possible away from home.

We wish Guy and his team all the best for the season and if anyone else has any pictures of themselves in Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club clothing from around the world please feel free to send them over to us at pro@cleoburygolfclub.com

Super Sue Presents

In early December, Sue Griffiths, the 2013/14 Lady Captain of Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club, accompanied by Marilyn Wood, treasurer of the Ladies Section, presented a cheque for £1000 to Kemp Hospice, which had been Sue's chosen charity during her year of office.

Ellie Millward and Julie Hicks received the cheque on behalf of Kemp Hospice and had prepared a framed certificate acknowledging their achievement.

Sue and the ladies section also took a leading role initiating the purchase and installation of a Heart Defibrillator at the club.

Sue, on behalf of the ladies section, expresses her grateful thanks to everyone, both club members and visitors, for their very generous donations, and also to the club management, and Liz Vanegas de Quickendon, for their support, enthusiasm, advice and assistance with the Defibrillator purchase.

Amy

Take advantage of the winter rules and clean your ball at every opportunity. This will help the ball run more and fly better.

Tom

Often in golf the conditions aren't perfect, but you must keep a perfect mindset, stay positive over every shot and think about what you can do and not what you can't.

Sam

Play the right golf ball, just because Rory or Tiger use the premium golf ball it does not mean that ball is suitable for you. Find the right golf ball that maximises your swing for distance off the tee and control around the greens… Unsure what ball is for you? Take the Titleist test here http://www.titleist.co.uk/golf-ball-fitting/

Men's double roll up results.

Despite an amber yellow warning in place for high winds over the two days, the CMGC men's double roll up competition saw some unbelievable golf being played. This competition allows players to play on either day with the best scores of the weekend picking up prizes.

Youngster Jem Jones has stated his intent for a big 2015 scoring 37 points to take third place from a host of other members including John Haywood, Stuart Humphries and Dean Carpenter with a superior back count.

Andy Thomas who currently leads the division 1 order of merit continues his fine form with 38 points scored on the Saturday. This topped the leader board going into the Sunday.

Andy however was just pipped to the post by the ever smiling Paul Liggins. Paul playing with his close friends Bob Lucas and John Westley made a mockery of the tough conditions with a storming back nine to shoot 40 points and take top spot.

Director of golf Dave Pain had this to say 'Paul is a very dangerous player off his handicap and is more than capable of these scores no matter what the conditions. It's interesting that Paul won playing with last weeks winner Bob and John. I'm sure if this continues everyone will want to play with these two.'

Final standings (winners have prizes from the pro shop)

1st - Paul Liggins - 40 points 2nd - Andy Thomas - 38 points 3rd - Jem Jones - 37 points

This weekend we have a four ball betterball, if you would like to enter please call or email me with a preferred tee time and I shall get you booked in.

Poker Night

The popular poker nights make their return to CMGC in 2015. The first one is on Friday 30th January. Please arrive from 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

We get between 25 - 35 players for these so it is certainly worth attending.

Knock outs

The 2015 knocks are now open and we are taking entry's in the golf centre.

Over the last two years the knock outs have been revitalised. Entry forms are dotted around the club house. Simply fill one in, place that and the correct money in the envelopes provided and drop it into a staff member in the golf centre.

Big names to look out for are last years singles winner John Gallagher and Steve and Phil Lau last years doubles winners.
