Hello from the one and only Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club. Another week passes us by as we get closer and closer to Christmas and the New Year. It may sound like I say it week in week out but once again we have been very busy and have loads to report. The 'Weather bomb' hit us just in time for the Christmas Open however we still managed to get 30 teams out who all still had a great day despite the tough conditions. The greens were still performing great as this picture highlights.
I also hope everyone is looking forward to the legendary CMGC Christmas party this Saturday! There is still a couple of spaces left on mine and Sam's table anyone is more than welcome to come and join us.
The click and collect option from our online store that can be found by clicking here has seen a massive upsurge in traffic over the last 8 days. December Betterball Results
Although it was cold, the sun was out to greet the Cleobury members for the December betterball. With a dry week behind them the greenkeeping team of Cleobury got the course looking excellent for the time of year with fairways, tees, surround and even parts of the rough being freshly cut.
There were a total of 20 teams contesting the event, early starters Rob Winnall and Dave Siddons once again showed their winter class to record 43. They were however beaten by Colm Berry and Chris Newman who had a superior back count. Colm and Chris were pipped to top spot by the late starters of Ian Dorrell and Rob Pinner who made the most of the more favourable conditions. Finishing with a birdie on the 18th Ian and Rob recorded 46 points. Director of golf Dave Pain added 'Ian and Rob are a fantastic partnership offering a great balance in the team. With Ian playing off 5 and Rob off 14, it gives them plenty of chances to make pars and birdies and post a great score which they have done today'.
This Saturday's competition is the Turkey filling up with 14 teams already down! I hope to see everyone in their Christmas jumpers and santas hats. This competition differs from other club competitions with the winners receiving meat vouchers from Bowketts Butchers in the village to put towards their Christmas dinner.
Vice Captain Dave Moore is also putting the finishing touches to his Mail on Sunday squad. He will require five players to represent the club in a singles match play format and hopes to get a squad of 12 together. The draw is not until the new year.
A massive thank you to the 120 people that played in our 2014 Christmas Open. Although the weather conditions were really tough everyone just about got round and enjoyed the day. Well done to George, Sally and the team for the lovely sausage and mash and Rose for serving up the mulled wine and mince pies. Some fantastic scores were posted and the full results can be found on our blog - www.cleoburygolfclub.tumblr.com however it was a Cleobury team who ended up winning the event with 93 points! Andy Thomas, Yoshi Oyama, Graham Fletcher and Roger Evans played some stunning golf and deserved their victory.
Finally a shout out to Amy for doing the par 3 challenge all day in the awful conditions. Thankfully she went all Bear Gryles on us and made a fire to stay warm
Captain and vice captain getting into the Christmas spirit and Amy's impressive fire!
Christmas & New Year Visitor Promotion
Christmas and new year is filling up fast, if you are part of a group please get in touch. We are currently offering 18 holes and a full English breakfast for £25 weekend or £22 midweek. This is running from now until January 15th. firstname.lastname@example.org 01299271112. Remember we never have temporary greens here at CMGC and the breakfast we offer is top notch. Give us a try or pass on the word to any friends or family.
Clearly mark your balls! This time of year is always crucial with the potential of getting bits of mud and dirt on the ball. Clearly mark your ball so you know it's yours, there is nothing worse than playing the wrong ball….. I speak from experience!
The wind direction and wind strength can certainly make golf interesting at Cleobury but try not to let it take you out of your usual routine. Swing as you usually would and try not to force the shot especially when playing in to wind. Remember to club up when playing in to wind but keep that swing nice and easy and not force the issue.
A simple thing of just organising your golf bag will greatly help you improve your golf ability. If you know where each club is within your golf bag, you will not lose focus on the shot you have planned, while you search for the proper club.
