A very festive good day from CMGC! Ho Ho Ho Christmas is fast approaching and we have been getting into the festive spirit here at Cleobury. With the decorations up, Christmas music playing and mince pies for lunch. This week's newsletter is jam packed with loads going on, we also have some new lesson and golf centre specials which make great presents.
Me and Sam were out playing Deer Park on Sunday afternoon and I must say it was a pleasant surprise how great the greens are rolling…. And of course how dry it is, the fairways are really firm. Yes there was a few wet patches in the rough but Deer Park is all about putting the ball in the right area e.g. you aim down the middle on the third rather than at the tree like in the summer. Well done to Adam and the greenkeepers the course is top notch…. As always.
Cleobury success in Shropshire and Herefordshire PGA Alliance.
A bumper field of 20 teams (80 players) contested the PGA Alliance held at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club on Thursday 27th November, with the early mist lifting the contest got underway before 9am with some great golf once again being played. Rob Winnall playing along side Club Captain Jon Gaskell, Ian Dorrell and Tom Pain shot 37 points to finish 4th in the individual amateur prizes playing off a three quarter handicap of 8 instead of his regular handicap of 11.
Tom Pain continued his good form in the winter alliances with 38 points to finish 3rd but he was to be out done by the new rising star at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club, Amy Millward who joined Cleobury at the beginning of September outclassed the field on her way to 38 points to win on count back and claim her first win at Cleobury. Amy who has being having regular lessons with Rob Grier produced a fine performance in the company of Bob Lucas, Nick Webb and John Gallagher to top the leader board in front of a packed clubhouse. Amy, who is hoping to gain her PGA Qualifications over the next three years, had this to say 'I really enjoyed it out there today with my team, to come out on top with such a big field feels great and I can't wait until the next event on the 18th December, I've worked hard on my game over the last few weeks so it's great to see it coming together'
Well played Amy, that means Cleobury had 3 players in the top 5 amateurs and have won the last two individual events and once again thanks for all the support from the membership in helping us to put out three teams regularly.

There is nothing worse than playing the wrong golf ball. You can stop that situation by ordering some personalised Titleist golf balls that are cheaper than on the high street. Start personalising by clicking the image. The ideal Christmas present for that special golfer in your life.
You have until December 8th to place orders in time for Christmas.
Sam - want to hit the ball further, and not let the winter months kill your distance? Research has proven that a proper warm up prior to play can only help you add yards to your drive… Check out the full details here..
Try and putt aggressively not just in the winter but all year round, if you hit the ball a bit too hard, you can watch the way it rolls as it passes the hole to help with the read on the return putt, if you leave it short you will have no such knowledge for the remaining length of the putt. On short putts, a firm hit is usually best as it can take the guesswork out of the break in the putt.
If you are an individual who struggles to carry their golf bag, but is prevented from playing during the winter because your trolley hasn't got suitable wheels then this year it's time to change that by buying hedgehog wheels which will allow you to play throughout the winter months and keep your golf going. These can be purchased from CMGC with all sizes available.
It is important to keep your touch when now the weather has dropped colder. Therefore keeping your hands and fingers warm is paramount as this will keep your grip in check and give you feel when the club hits the ball. Try putting some hand warmers in your pockets or mitts to keep your hands warm and keep your touch and grip consistent.
Captains Drive In and Presentation Competition
Captains Classic/Drive in
A big thank you to everyone that supported the captains classic and drive in on Saturday. It was fantastic to see such a big field of CMGC member contesting the competition and supporting the incoming captains.
The betterball competition had some fantastic scores and by the sounds of it everyone enjoyed the competition and of course the cakes after nine holes.
Pictured are Steve and Phil Lau who won the competition with 50 points. I'm pretty sure no team has ever got that in a betterball here at CMGC. Don't forget they are also the doubles KO champions…..
A formidable partnership that will take some beating!
Guess the Drives
Maurice Clarke drove 70 yards - closest guess was Adam Warren who said 100 yards
Julie Currie drove 40 yards - closest guess was Ian Duncan who said 99 yards
John Gaskell drive 159 yards - closest guess was Chris Newman who said 160 yards
Nearest the pins…….
Ian Duncan - 5th Deer Park
