Greetings from Cleobury Golf

As I write this week's instalment of the goings on at Cleobury I look outside to blue sky and what looks like a summer's day. Yet here I am in 4 layers of clothing and a buggy ban, it has certainly been a strange old week.

Having said that considering the downpours the course is still holding up really well. The important areas, greens, tees and fairways are still remarkably firm it is just very punishing in the rough.

With that in mind head greenkeeper Rob has asked me just to remind CMGC golfers to follow paths and roped off areas. Use hedgehog wheels where possible and repair as many pitch marks as possible.

The putting green is still firm and rolling like a dream.

Sam's Tip

The rough and areas off the fairways are very punishing this time of year no matter where you play. Winter golf is often very tactical concentrate on hitting fairways and staying out of danger. Sometimes it is better to hit hybrid off the tee and find the fairway compared to the driver and finding the punishing rough.

Amy's Tip

Throughout the winter it is going to be wet and windy so it is important that you have a pair of golf shoes that are both waterproof and sturdy, that will withstand even the most torrential downpour of rain; therefore it is time to pack away the summer spikeless shoes and replace them with a practical studded shoe such as the Stuburt boot which has a 12 month waterproof guarantee or the FootJoy Greenjoys which also come with a 1 year waterproof guarantee

Dave's Tip

I really feel the cold and come the winter months I live in base layers. These trap a thin layer of warm air against the body to keep you warmer for longer. It should fit closely like a 'second skin', an should be made from an wicking material which not only allows you to move freely, but also allows you to transport moisture away from the skin. I recommend the Stuburt base layers priced at £22 because they fit great and keep me warm.

Tom's Tip

Keep Hydrated. As the temperature starts to drop you can be forgiven to reach for the hot flask full of tea or coffee but don't forget that your body still needs nutrients and hydration. Keep a bottle of water or sports drink in the bag to keep you refreshed, properly hydrated and focused on your round.

Alliance Success For Cleobury Stuburt Brand ambassadors At Hawstone Park Golf Club.

The second Shropshire Alliance was held at Hawkstone Park Golf Club on Wednesday 12th November with Cleobury managing to field three teams in the 18 team event, which again shows great support from the members.

With over night rain the teams were relieved to see the rain hold off throughout the day with the sun even breaking out the back nine.

Played on the 'Old Course' the Cleobury C team narrowly missed out on the team prizes but picked up some important Order of Merit Points with Dean Carpenter playing some great golf on his way to 37 points and a 3rd place finish in the amateur standings.

More success was to follow for Cleobury with Tom Pain shooting 38 points, completing the back 9 in two under gross for 22 points to win on count back and take the overall amateur prize.

Tom had this to say, 'It was great fun out there today with Ian (Dorrell), Andy (Johnson) and Simon (Johnson), Ian knows my game well so was a great help plotting my way round the course, the Titleist Pro V1 also gave me the confidence to be more aggressive on the back 9 when I knew I had to make some birdies. The key for me at the moment is certainly my play from the tee, after struggling for a while Sam (Pain) got me on the launch monitor on the practice area, made a few tweaks including lofting up and I'm hitting a lot more fairways with my G30 which makes things slightly easier than playing from out of the trees!'

The scores were made even more impressive by the fact that they were playing off ¾ Handicaps.

The next Alliance is actually at Cleobury on Thursday 27th November, the teams have almost filled up so if you would like to play please speak to the Pro Shop as soon as possible.

Men's Yellowball 9/11/14

A beautiful winters day greeted the Cleobury members as they contested the yellowball. This fun team of four event is played over 18 holes with the best two scores per hole counting. The yellowball is rotated around each player per hole and counts for double points. However if it is lost it is lost for the whole round adding extra pressure when it's in your hands!

Overall just over one third of the teams did not return the yellowball, with the culprit from each team getting some friendly banter in the bar after! Early starters Brian Linington Payne, Dave Rowse and Dave Walker put in a stunning performance considering they were a player down and recorded 124 points. They just came up short however with the last team out beating them.

Rob Pinner, Jim Went, Andy Young and Ian Dorrell (pictured) cruised to victory with an impressive 134 points. They kept the yellowball the whole way around and made some high scores using it with the double points.

Director of golf Dave Pain added…
'They are a very strong team with a nice mix of handicaps, as soon as I saw their names on the team sheet I knew they would be the ones to beat.'

TaylorMade Rsi

Research suggests 76% of all golf shots are mis-hits, so we welcome technology that can help any loose ones less damaging and, therefore, lower our scores. In this video we speak to TaylorMade’s Executive Vice President, Sean Toulon, who explains how its Speed Pocket will help improve performance on shots that don’t come off the centre of the clubface… and we all hit a few of those!
