Another week rockets by and we get closer and closer to September and Club Championships. This week, the course and weather has been stunning, we have had loads of positive comments regarding the course and it is great to see the place so busy. This weekend we have a Weekend Stableford, this means you can play either day and it’s the best scores over the weekend that take homes the prizes. Sunday we also have a charity golf day for the Bewdley Community Transport. This is a 2:00pm shotgun start meaning if you want to play 18 holes you need to be teed off by 11.30am on Sunday or after 4:00pm. A big well done to George Blakeway who won the John Birch competition at the weekend. The course is fantastic at the moment, check out the roll of the greens and some of the comments below.

Lots of exciting news in this week's edition, so sit back and enjoy the read. |
Leon and the tree The Oak tree on the 3rd of Deer Park has now been completely taken down, sadly after the original left side of the trunk fell the right side was just too dangerous. Leon did an amazing job and had it down and tidy within two days. We are currently exploring ideas of what to do as it does leave a gap. A black steel wolf's head with glow in the dark orange eyes has my vote… If you have any tree work needed doing, please give Leon a call on 07745315378. Watch the video below to see Leon in action. |
The greens get a haircut
You may have noticed this week we have been scarifying the greens. In order to keep our greens in the best condition possible, we use several different methods to aerate, reduce thatch, improve water infiltration and improve the surface so that the ball rolls true.
As we deep aerated in early spring and then hollow tined in late spring we are now scarifying. The scarifier as you can see from the video is in effect a vertical cutting blade that is set to cut approx. 20mm into the surface to cut out any excess thatch and organic matter. This surplus organic matter is left on the surface for a couple of hours to dry and is then blown off the green leaving very little disruption. The grass will quickly recover from this and leave a smooth level surface ready for some lovely quick greens for Club Championships. Watch the video below to see it in action. |

August Bank Holiday Tex AM Open 2019
Bank Holidays’ are always wet and miserable in the UK…WRONG! Near perfect conditions met the 32 teams that contested the Bank Holiday Open here at CMGC. 15 mixed teams and 17 non-mixed teams were treated to some very quick greens and sky-high temperatures. The Texas AM format with nearest the pins is always fun and rewards long drives. Monday however, it was down to the putter and holing putts. Something special was in the air when two out of the three nearest the pins were won with holes in one. Well played Val and Pat. |
In the mixed section, four teams were on the same score of 96 points with three prizes up for grabs. Countback can always be cruel and you always think of that one putt that may of missed but Martin, Simon, Helena and Gay shot 49 points on Deer Park to take the top spot. In the non-mixed, our very own Graham was called up at the last minute and joined Mark, John and Dave. They played great and finished on 101 points to take third place. The top two spots, however, belonged to the Barnsley Boys. They teed off early, had buggies to avoid the heat., and stayed in the lodges the night before to have a full day’s practice on Sunday. Captain Rob Nield guided his team to 106 points to take top spot.

Worcestershire Open Pro-AM
The Worcestershire Open Pro-AM was once again a huge success with 18 teams from across the county gunning for victory. Andy Smith and his business Kidderminster Self Storage once again sponsored the event putting in £1000 straight into the professionals’ prize fund.
Although the conditions were very sunny, the wind did get up in the afternoon making it tougher and tougher. Daniel Phillips shot 36 points to finish 5th. Simon Gabbitas and Chris Mole were tied with 37 points. Jamie Brittain playing the course for the first time got to two under to finish second. The day, however, belonged to someone who knows his way around CMGC. Luke Towler shot an incredible 41 points (5 under gross) to win by three. Luke has played Cleobury many times and said this was the best condition he had ever seen it.
In the team event, David Finch and the Cleeve Hill lads shot 90 points to win by three.
A big thank you to Lee, Adam and Iain for helping run and organise the event and to everyone for entering. |

Amy's leaving drinks
Don’t forget, Amy is having some leaving drinks and food at CMGC on Saturday, 7 September at 6:00pm. We have a little leaving book in the shop and are going to try and get as many members to leave a note as possible. Everyone is welcome.

New staff members
Well, I was not expecting so many messages and text messages with everyone wanting to know who the new staff members are in the Pro Shop. With the increase in membership, overall rounds played at CMGC and the imminent arrival of Baby Pain number two, we made the decision to recruit and train twp new members to make sure our high levels of customer service are maintained. Joining us from now are Christian Thomsen and Jack Severn many of you know Christian and Jack but if not here is a bit of background information.
Christian: Between December and April, Christian is a ski instructor in St Anton and is engaged to Graham’s daughter Milly. Outside of the ski season Christian is a very keen golfer, he has been looking to combine the two roles and this position suits him perfectly. It sounds great, doesn’t it…. Ski in the winter, golf in the summer. Christian is used to dealing with a variety of customers during the skiing season from Princes to bankers. He prides himself on his bubbly personality, attention to detail and most importantly, customer experience.
Jack: Jack first came to CMGC when he was just three years old, his father Scott was a founder member and despite living in Stourbridge, they have always stayed members. Jack is a two-time Club Champion, the lowest handicap golfer at the club and has just completed his Worcestershire Junior County career where he was the Captain. Now 18, Jack is taking a year off education to focus on playing and competing, this will sit perfectly to work at CMGC and do extra hours whilst Christian is away.
Over the next six weeks, both Christian and Jack will be learning every element of the business, after that period more specific jobs rolls will be given to each. Please make them feel nice and welcome and show them the Cleobury way.
There is one person we have not mentioned… JOSH! Well, we also have some exciting plans in place for him. Josh will be coming in as my (Dave’s) right-hand man and over the next two months, Josh will be playing a lot of golf to turn professional. Over the Autumn and into the new year Josh will be shadowing me in lessons and we will also be running group coaching sessions together. If all goes to plan Josh will then start his coaching from early April 2020. Having five staff which includes two golf coaches within the pro shop will be massive for the club and shows how much we continue to grow. I cannot think of another club with such a buzz at the moment. A massive thanks to you all for the support and best of luck to the next crop of staff on their CMGC career path. |
Revealed: Our top driver of 2019 |
Looking for a new driver this year? There is plenty of choice out there so why not grab a coffee, take five and watch our latest video on why PING’s G410 driver has set our pulses racing this year? |
“Your consistency of distance goes up in the G410 driver” We can’t argue against that and, combined with adjustability, it is the main reason why PING’s G410 Plus is our first-choice driver in 2019. We love its perimeter weighting that can be moved into a draw, neutral or fade setting to help counter your bad shots and hit more fairways. The design of the club at address also feeds confidence as PING's trademark Dragonfly Technology has been developed even further this year to help... “The clubhead moves that little bit faster through the air to aid ball speed”. It all sounds impressive and it is, so, with three G410 drivers to choose from, let's book you in for a demo so you can give them and go and get fitted for the best model for your game.
