Welcome to this week’s newsletter. Another busy week passes us by, this week we have LOADS to report with some great golf being played, windy conditions and some big news from Amy. Enjoy the read.

Heavy winds cause havoc Sadly, due to the heavy winds, the oak tree in front of the 3rd Deer Park came down. As the pictures show, it was a big lump of timber that fell. Local tree surgeon Leon has been on hand getting it chopped up. Big thanks to everyone for understanding and allowing us to get the job done smoothly. At least the clubhouse will be nice and warm over the winter with the log burner! |
|
The lads have added some iron to the greens to strengthen the sword of grass. If you look at the greens at the moment the grass coverage is first class. This week they will have a verti cut which will almost thin them out whilst still maintaining the strong coverage.
We have also tidied up the new winter tee on the 4th of Deer Park. Visibility was restricted on the normal summer tee so we have made it smaller in width so the view is back to what it was. Fingers crossed this will be in play in the next six months. Enjoy the course this week, it's in lovely condition.

President's Day
The 2019 President's Day was once again a huge success and despite the wind and rain, 68 players took on the 27, 18 and 9 hole format. President's Day is one of the Cleobury Majors and it was great to see a mix of prize winners. Stuart Wilson played great around Deer Park to get 20 points and take the nine-hole trophy. Rich Dutton had a putter fitting and lesson on Friday with myself (Dave) and it certainly helped. Rich had three-putted, eight times last time he was playing and was determined to change that. We worked on set up, stroke and distance control and what a difference with 42 points to take home the 18 hole trophy ahead of Ian Gough. |
The Cleveland putters are just £75 so pop into the Pro Shop if you would like to discuss a fitting like Rich had.
In the 27 hole competition, it was a battle between PXG troop Gary Hingley and Phil Lau. Gary just came up short to take second place. Phil Lau is one of the most consistent players at the club and it showed with the conditions they played in. They had everything for six hours, from wind and rain to sunshine.
A big well done to all the Major winners and of course to president Tom for putting on the day and supplying the bacon sandwiches. |

Goodbye Amy I’m excited and sad to announce that I will be leaving CMGC to take on a Teaching Professional job at the Claude Harmon School of Golf in Dubai as of Wednesday, 11 September. I have had the most incredible five years at Cleobury that have been so special to me because of the staff, members and visitors that play each week! I have learnt so much while I have been here, growing in confidence, which without all of you I wouldn’t be moving to Dubai to work in the golf school I’ve always wanted to work at! |
|
I’m so lucky to take my next career step to Dubai and work alongside some amazing coaches as well as Claude Harmon III!
My last weekend will be the Men’s Club Championship Weekend, where I will be checking everyone in and doing the presentation. I will be having some leaving drinks on the Saturday evening (7th) from 6:00pm onwards and would be great to see as many members there as possible to say goodbye!
For anyone wanting to get a lesson in before I go, please see my lesson availability:
- Friday, 16 August - 6:00pm - Monday, 19 August - 8:00am, 12:00pm and 1:00pm - Monday, 9 September - 8:00am, 9:00am, 10:00am, 11:00am, 12:00pm, 1:00pm or 5:00pm
CMGC will always have a special place in my heart. Hopefully, I will see some of you in sunny Dubai in the future for a lesson or two!

Hole in one alert Big congratulations to Ian Pringle who picked up his fourth Hole in One on Thursday. Ian aced the 6th on Badgers Sett with a slightly thin shot off the tee! Well played Ian. |

Junior Open
CMGC’s Junior Open was hosted on Thursday, 8 August, with juniors from across the county coming over to take part. As we border both Worcestershire and Shropshire, we are one of the furthest clubs for juniors to get too, so it’s great to see so many make the journey. |
As ladies golf is currently having a massive push across the globe, it was incredible to see an even split of boys and girls entering and taking part. Boys:
Best Gross- James Ilsley 1st nett - William Chater - nett 70 2nd nett - Mark Hewlett - nett 71
Girls:
Best Gross - Ellie Potts 1st nett - Maisie Whittall - nett 74 CB 2nd nett - Abbie Johnson - nett 74
