Seniors Open Qualifying Back in 2003 as a scruffy 18 year old, I had enough of education and got a one way ticket to Australia to do some travelling and working. The day I arrived, I landed a job at a golf course with Head Professional David Fearns. I ended up working with him over nearly three years and this year he emailed to say he was coming over to play. Me and Boris went up to Fairhaven to support him as he tried to qualify for the Seniors Open. Despite two birdies on the last four holes he finished one over par to miss out by one! He now heads to the London Club to try and qualify for the PGA Open. Fingers crossed he can have a knock at CMGC on his way down. It was crazy when you haven’t seen someone for nearly 15 years how you get on like you saw them last week.

Amy's putter fitting Amy here! As you know Dave and Tom are both huge promotors of PXG and how good it is and I totally agree but I have always been loyal to PING and my Scotty Cameron putter. However on our latest Demo Day on Wednesday, I gave into temptation and had a putting fitting with Matt. What happened next meant a PXG Lucky D putter is the latest addition to my golf bag! I have always been a big believer in having custom fitted clubs and a putter, however never had the chance to have a specific putting fitting. Matt set up the TrackMan on the putting green and I started by having a few putts with my current putter. Matt noticed straight away that I actually had a good putting stroke and was a decent putter, (sense some shocked faces from the shop staff, specifically Dave!) yet my current putter was too long for me and not quite heavy enough so meant I consistently aimed right to then pull the putter left as I couldn’t prevent the toe from closing through the putt. |
I tried a few different putters and settled for the Lucky D at 32.5 inches, 1.5 inches shorter than my current putter with extra weight in the toe. The difference this made was incredible. I not only started aiming where I should be but I was also holing nearly every putt and my stroke was then improved further. This has given me a huge confidence boost and I couldn’t recommend having a putter fitting enough. If you are not feeling PXG but in need of a new putter, I’d definitely go for a putting fitting and try what you can to find something that suits you and your stroke. New greens mowers delivered Last week saw us take delivery of two new Toro greens mowers to replace our old John Deere mowers. We have a scheduled machinery replacement program to try and ensure we have a fleet of top quality, reliable and efficient equipment to maintain the course’s 200 acres. Most 18-hole courses are set on about 100 - 120 acres so you can see the importance of having good mowing equipment for our brilliant greens team to use. The new Toro mowers do give a superb quality finish and are easy to operate and set up.
Our greens are cut every day during the main season (March - October). The height of cut in summer is 3.5mm with 27 greens, putting green and a chipping green giving a total area of more than 4 acres or 2.5 full size football pitches!
The investment never stops at CMGC! |
More trenching... More trenches have been added, this time on the 9th of Deer Park. Just as the fairway starts is always a wet area and the lads have managed to add some that lead into the pond on the 8th. They are currently settling and will be a great addition once the winter comes!
Take a look at selfie king Nigel (who looks great for 62!) on it with the lads. |

July Open results The July Texas AM was a huge success with 26 teams enjoying the lovely weather and conditions on show.
The tightly contested mixed golf section was very close with 100 points taking first place. Many commented on how fun the format was and, of course, the sausage and mash after play!
There were some very good teams on paper including first out… Mark Broughton contributed over 50 points for his team making the most of his shots from some long drives to finish on 101.
The Little Lakes lads were right on their tails shooting 102 points however the CMGC lads of Karl, Lewis, Ad and Ash just pipped them with the same score but a superior back count.
Team Captain Adam had this to say: "After a few dodgy team games as of late the #thrillmasters have shown up! As team captain this week I would like to dedicate this win to Karl’s mom and Lewis’s new born little boy! We have had a tough week as a team this week, but we have all shown up today and done our own part when it counted! We have had a laugh as always and played some quality golf (except my tee shot on 18 that was needed) - so proud of us all as a unit today”

Summer Series Our latest Summer Series took us to Patsull Park Golf Club. Amy drew the short straw to work which left Dave, Tom and Josh as team captains. After the draw we all fancied our chances. After a slow start, Dave’s team got it together on the back nine and also finished with 34 points in the yellow ball. Josh's team shot 82 but lost the yellow ball on the 11th hole (unlucky Geoff King). Tom’s team were last out and no one knew how they were getting on. Jim Pearce was rolling back the years, Peter was using his shots wisely and AJ shot level gross with a bogey on the last! This left them cleaning up with 92 points plus 41 with the yellow ball.
