Greetings from Cleobury Golf

Goooood day to all the members and friends of CMGC. Another week passes us by as we go from October into November.

Did everyone enjoy Halloween, I popped over to a party with my girlfriend Clare as the standard Dracula. She however went one better and took home the best costume of the night trophy for her arty sugarskull.

Despite some heavy rain at times the course is still holding up really well as the great competition scores that are being posted show.

This picture of the first of foxes run which I took on November 1st really highlights the firmness of the greens which is a testament to the drainage on them.

Putting videos

Over the last week we have been posting a few putting videos on our social media sites. What started as a little bit of fun seems to have taken off judging by the amount of views. They were simply done to highlight the importance of putting and that holing more crucial putts from crucial distances can be the key to a great score. Click the links to check them out..

South Staffs

The first professional's alliance of the season kicked off on Monday with Cleobury entering two teams at South Staffs golf club. The conditions were very tough with the ground wet from heavy rain. Both teams did really well considering the conditions and just missed out on prizes finishing mid table. The next one is at Hawkstone Park next week followed by the Cleobury one on November 27th. We still have 2 spaces left if anyone would like to play.

Pictured here is Tom and Amy warming up before heading over.

Amy's tip

As the winter moves in, you club selection will be extremely important, as the ball will travel less due to the cold air but also their will be little if any run on the ball; Therefore take advantage of the latest products on sale such as the Sky caddie SGX and the Sky caddie SGX-W available in the golf centre. These tools will equip you with the right information of how far it is, all that's down to you is picking the right club that will make it to the green.

Tom's tip

Keep your hands nice and warm. Golf relies a lot on touch and feel and if your hands are frozen then your game may well struggle. Wear winter mittens in between shots and even add some hand warmers for the chilliest of days. Your hands are the only connection between you and the club and keeping them warm will help with greater touch, feel and better golf.

Dave's tip

Make the most of the winter rules, between EVERY shot lift, clean and place your ball even if it appears clean or on a nice lie. Any mud on the ball will affect the flight of your next shot meaning it won't go where you want it to. So make sure your ball is totally clean

Sam's Tip

Wet, thick grass often grabs the hosel of the club and causes a snap hook. Try hitting a hybrid rather than a long iron as it is shaped to cut through the grass more effectively. On shorter shots create a stepper angle of approach to help hit the back of the ball without it getting caught up in the wet grass before impact.

Mini Mcilroys

Another School holiday, Another Junior Golf Academy here at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club. Tuesday 28th was the first day of the Academy which attracted a number of junior golfers of all ages and abilities to participate in the day. The day covered all areas of the golf game, from long game to pitching, chipping and putting. All juniors were encouraged to take part in all areas of the day with the opportunity to win prizes which greatly increased their already present enthusiasm. The day proved that there is great potential in the youngsters of today from as young an age of 5 and 6, who in the future will hopefully become CMGC very own mini Mcilroy's! #talentofthefuture

Don't forget the Saturday lessons are now 10 - 11 everyone is welcome to attend.

Men's Texas Am

With the unseasonal mild temperatures and sunshine still shining on Cleobury Mortimer golf club the men's texas am competition saw a bumper field taking part. This great team format is contested with the best two stableford scores per hole counting. The course and ability of the Cleobury member was superb with 6 teams tied on 94 points. The first group out of the in form Duncan Trow, David Annetts, Mike Wood and Nick Webb posted a great score of 96 to be winning all day... UNTIL in the dark out of nowhere a buggy was seen on the last with captain Guy Taylor and his team in tow. They pulled off a miracle to just take top spot with 97 points. The team made up of Gordon Moraity, Rich Smith, Guy Taylor and Bob Bennett playing his last competition before moving to Florida for 6 months.

Captain Taylor had this to say 'we knew the score to beat was going to be in the late nighties, we slipped away a little at the end with the day light decreasing. It's a relief to get the win by such a tight margin. A massive thanks to everyone playing making it a great event'.

Scratch team and handicap team wear

For those who did not know popular CMGC member Guy Taylor is taking over the handicap team from Andy Johnson. Andy did a brilliant job over the last 2 seasons but felt it was time to focus on playing and hand over the captaincy. Although the season does not kick off for another five months Guy is keen to get things in place now. A sign up sheet for people interested in playing for the team will be going up shortly and Guy will be keeping an eye on competition scores and order of merit placing for players in form.

'my objective is to get us out of the group stage, I will be looking at form and results but also pairs that know each others games'.

Tom has also agreed to continue with the re building of the scratch team for next season. 'We have some great young talent coming through and I want to be apart of this exciting and fearless team'.

The handicap team will also be looking to get some shirts done for next year to give the team an identity. It also shows the teams means business when the opposition shows up. If any companies out there would be interested in sponsoring either of the teams please get in touch.

In the mean time we have a limited number of team jumpers both for scratch and handicap team players. They have the CMGC logo on with 'Team Player' underneath it, this way it is consistent across both scratch and handicap team sections as some players will be playing in both.

These are priced at £25 - we have 10 left in stock until the re order next year when the shirt orders are also placed. So be quick otherwise you will have to wait!
