Some would say Watford’s comeback against Wolves was the greatest ever. However, with Tiger Woods coming back from the brink to win The Masters, I think that might just go down as the greatest sporting comeback EVER! It was compelling viewing. I personally had Molinari so was a little gutted to see him miss out. If you haven’t read the Tiger Woods book you don’t quite realise what he has been through, take it on holiday, have a read and you will have a lot of respect for him from a sporting point of view. Read on for the results from the sweep.
Enjoy this week's read. |

Work in progress
Another busy week for the team this week. Aside from keeping on top of the cutting, they have been rolling the greens to get the speed up, adding growth regulator to the bunker faces, and adding new de-coders to the irrigation system. They have asked me to mention a few things and to ask you not to be offended if they see you doing them and they ask you not to:
- Please keep off white tees for general play, the white tees are generally smaller and are saved for competition play
- Greenkeepers have right of way at all times, so if they are cutting please don’t hit at them
- Please stick to the course the Pro Shop allocate - especially in the mornings. Working with a small team, they follow the online tee sheet to get the job done out of golfer’s way. In the morning if there are 12 golfers out on the whole course, yet on three nines, it takes longer to get the cutting done. The professional team know best so even if someone is on the tee, please stick to this.
- Repair pitchmarks, rake bunkers and use the divot boxes on tees to repair divots
- Don't forget you can always let groups through out on the course. If a group behind is playing quick don't be afraid to let them through.
If you see a greenkeeper, have a chat to them and congratulate them on the job they are doing.

Membership update Below is a copy of something I wrote last week on social media as a little round up of what we have been thinking over the last few months. Since I wrote it another 6 members have signed up taking it to 36 in two months! If you see me over the next few days let me know your thoughts on what I wrote:
The Taster Membership proved a huge success. We picked up 30 new members. A massive thank you to everyone that has joined the club and also spread the word to friends and family.
The club has really developed over the last two years with a thriving membership. The senior’s section has over 60 playing in competitions and the ladies section is continuing to grow. Weekend competitions get 70 plus playing and of course we have members that just like to play with their mates etc.
If you look at reviews of CMGC you will see a common trend - the welcome and friendliness of the place. This is 2019, people have busy lives and golf is very much a leisure hobby and offers down time. We strive to make this as easy going as possible e.g. you turn up and can have some breakfast, you get a smile, you have a round of golf with a good pace on a well looked after golf course and you can have a pint in the bar after without feeling like you’re going to be told off for wearing trainers!
We hear gossip such as the course is wet, it’s up for sale, it’s run by a bunch of farmers. Really? Do you think I would be working six days a week, spending thousands of pounds on education with a young family to not know what we are doing? Just last week I took a group of members along with Tom and Josh to a local course for an away day. We were sat around a table having a drink and some food and the 'secretary' comes over asks where we are from and if any of us are looking to move and join there! I am the professional of the club, with Tom and Josh, why are you asking us this?... it sounds desperate.
We will continue to work hard, develop the course and concentrate on our job rather than what everyone else is doing.
30 new members in two months plus an expanding membership are on board with it and I expect more to join in April and May... Let's have a great season with some great golf and many laughs!
Cheers, Dave Click here for more information on our Taster Membership. |
Dudley Physical Impairment Medical Inclusion Service - charity fundraiser CMGC member John Addison is helping some local children to enjoy the great outdoors. Anyone that can help please get in touch. Full details below. The physical Impairment / Medical Inclusion service is a team of qualified specialist teachers and a specialist peripatetic teaching assistant. The service works collaboratively with other professionals in health and social care and with colleagues in sport and recreation. Staff support and develop the needs of the whole pupil in order to encourage social and emotional development as well as academic achievement. Kim Fisher is the Head of Service and she along with the team at PIMIS are endeavouring to take a group of 10 - 15 year olds with a mix of physical and medical disabilities on a five day break to the Lake District Calvert Trust (LDCT). Activities on the trip include canoeing, walking, cycling, horse riding, swimming and their own wheelchair Zumba in the sports hall! Food and accommodation need to be provided along with the activities and due to the extreme and varied disabilities of the children, one to one care is required in many cases. We are attempting to help Kim raise £5000, towards the cost of this worthwhile venture and as part of our fundraising, we are holding a charity golf day at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club on Friday, 10 May 2019. The event will take the form of a Texas Scramble with teams of four and the package will include a lunchtime snack with dinner and prize presentations in the evening. The cost is £240 per team - discounted by £18 for any fee-paying member of the club. If you feel that you would like to we would be grateful for any sponsorship or prize donations.
Regards, John Addison

Mixed golf
The traditional curtain raiser for the mixed golfing season at Cleobury is the 9&9 brunch, where couples play for the Eden Shield.
As ever, the event was well supported with large number of couples entering this year’s competition. The front nine was played over Deer Park after which, each group returned to the clubhouse for a full English breakfast. With very full stomachs, thanks to the kitchen staff, the competition concluded with the back nine played over Foxes.

Judging by the returned scorecards, some great golf was played by all. In third place, just missing out on count back was Chris Perry and Andy Johnson, with Heather and Ian Pringle taking second spot. However, it was the mixed golfing specialists, Lynne and Rob Pinner who claimed the Eden Shield this year. Well done to them and thanks to all those who entered and supported this great competition. |
April Stableford A dry but chilly day was in store for the Saturday Stableford at CMGC. Plenty of members have been in fine form over the Winter and now it’s qualifying season it’s a chance to make some adjustments to those handicaps. Graham Fletcher and last week’s winner Jezz Duffield have both enjoyed some good form over the last few months and this continued with both players recording 38 points, with Jezz taking second spot on count back. Jack Severn took top spot with a 4 under par gross 67 equalling 40 points. Jack has done fantastically well over the last couple of years and deserves a big pat on the back as he has reduced his handicap to plus 1, an incredible achievement. In Division Two Jason Chance and Simon Hartwell returned solid scores of 36 points which would see them just miss out on the prizes as Rich Dutton finished with a three pointer to jump on to 37 points for second spot. Jason and Rich have had lessons with Dave and Simon with Amy. It is great to see those already in contention so early in the season. David Punsheon secured the best score of the weekend with 41 points and a nice two shot handicap cut to go with it. David responded well to just one point on the first with three, three pointers in a row. David’s strong form continued throughout the round with 22 points on the front nine backed up brilliantly with 19 on the back.
The next Stableford is on Saturday, 20 April before we all crack open some Easter Eggs on the Sunday.

Finally... Pain number two is on its way... Due Tuesday, 15 October! |
|
Do you often find yourself stuck between clubs? One club will launch too far beyond your target whilst the other will leave you short. If so, you're either very unlucky or you need to come and see us for a gapping session. |
| Example of poor distance gapping
|
|
Distance gapping is the art of putting your set together whilst ensuring each gap between one club and the next is equal. Take your wedges as an example. Say you have a PW with around 46 degrees of loft and sand wedge at 56 degrees; this 10-degree gap could leave you with a distance gap of around 30 yards or more! What do you do if you need to play a shot right in the middle of those distances? The same can be said at the other end of your set, but usually this will involve two clubs going the same distance. If you have a 3-iron in the bag as well as a hybrid and a 5-wood, chances are you'll be hitting them similar distances - so it's time for one to go! If any of this is resonating with you, then let’s get you booked in before you head out for your next round.
