Another fantastic week here at the club with the weather just unbelievable, they are now talking of mid-teens temperatures. The lads have been very busy coring the greens this week which is a massive eight weeks earlier than last year which just shows the difference in the weather. This weekend, myself and Josh are in Portugal with members playing golf, with the weekend looking busy here at CMGC so please call Tom and Amy if your thinking of coming up.
Enjoy this week's read. (This picture was taken on Tuesday morning)

CMGC members huge charity fundraising
Anyone who plays golf at CMGC will be well aware of the reputation the club and its members have for their outstanding generosity when it comes to hosting and supporting charity fundraising events. 2018 proved to be an exceptional year and it looks as though 2019 is heading the same way.
On Saturday, 16 February we held a cheque presentation brunch on behalf of John and Ange Gaskell who were under the banner of “The Rainbow Cancer Care Foundation”. During 2018 John, Ange and their team of helpers organised a major charity golf day, a night golf event and a Ryder Cup style event with Brampton Golf Club near Hereford. Over 300 golfers played in these events and along with sponsorship they raised a total of £20,160.Cheques were presented to Kidderminster Prostate Support Group, Cancer Research, Macmillan, Midlands Air Ambulance and 4Louis.
The Rainbow Cancer Care Charity was started by John and Ange 10 years ago after Ange’s mother had received so much help and support from Macmillan during her battle with cancer, over the years they have raised almost £100,000 for these causes. This year the cheque presentation was organised by friends and supporters Gary and Ange Hingley, Dave and Carol Moore and Mark and Lorraine Watson with John and Ange’s daughter Kelly on hand to present the cheques.
It was very emotional day with plenty of tears as unfortunately Ange Gaskell is having her own fight against cancer and was unable to attend the event. Everyone attending sends their best wishes and love to Ange and John and have vowed to ensure the golf day goes ahead this year on Friday, 5 July. Further details will be released on this shortly but please can you all pencil it in your diaries.

Stableford The fantastic weather is keeping all the members out playing and this week’s Stableford saw 67 playing. On Saturday the scores were a little quiet with Dave Punsheon shooting 38 points and Charlie Edwards 39 points to lead their divisions going into Sunday. |
Tim Whitehouse playing off a 19-handicap finished one over gross for his last five holes to finish on 40 points to pip Dave and take spot in Division Two. In Division One John Gallagher continued his fine winter form to take Division One with 40 points.
This weekend it is a Pairs competition and is already looking busy, remember you can book online or by calling us at the club. The format is best stableford score on each hole with both scores to count on par 3’s. Don’t forget you can play this in 3’s, 9/10 handicap.
Pictured here is Tim, I only asked for a picture but he had a few words ready.

Work experience Rosanna Halls is helping out a bit in the golf centre as part of her Duke of Edinburgh award. Rosanna plays off a handicap of 4.8 and has been a nice addition to the team, as she is such a good player, I have asked her for a putting drill. Here it is below. |
It is called the around the clock drill, it’s a simple yet effective drill that consists of five stations around the hole. The five stations will include four tees at progressive lengths away from the hole (eg: 3ft, 4ft, 5ft and 6ft).
You should take one ball from each tee peg and work your way around the stations until you feel comfortable with the 3ft putts. Then move on to the 4ft putts. Keep moving up to the longer putts until you have successfully completed this drill.
Overall this drill will benefit your putting prowess and improve your confidence in holing those shorter putts.

[* END *] CMGC is hardcore
With the weather seemingly on our side at the moment it has meant the greenkeeping team have been able to start maintenance work on the greens. The team are currently hollow tining the greens (not to be confused with solid tining) which is a way of removing material such as thatch which then allows water and air in to the root zone.
|
When a core comes out, it needs to be replaced by something which is where top dressing is applied and brushed in. Think of it as a soil exchange programme. Thatch and soil is removed and quality sand is added to aid water movement through the surface and drainage, that makes it a lot easier for the plant to grow. On the greens, the aim is to move water away from the surface as quickly as possible, that means aerating at all different depths. The team have decided to go deeper and wider this year to really reap the benefits with cores 15mm in diameter and 6 inches deep been removed. The more that can be done, the more effectively water can be moved away from the surface. Keeping the surface dry has the benefits of better-quality grass, reduction in disease and disorders, such as moss, and increased all year-round playability. |
|
Ultimately the benefits of aeration are listed below: - Compaction relief and improved surface performance - Better penetration of water and air - Fertiliser/nutrients delivered into the root zone - Improves soil structure - Improves rooting capacity - Longer use of the surface - increased playability all year round - Releases toxic gases from the soil - Increases shoot growth

We all love new golf equipment – be it balls, clubs or shoes; there’s nothing like stepping out onto the course knowing that everything in your bag is in pristine condition. Except, for the majority of golfers, there’s always one thing which is often forgotten about... |
| How old are your grips? |
| Losing control during your swing? |
|
If you pulled a club out of your bag now, what state would your grips be in? You’ll probably notice that they’re at the very least losing some of the tackiness they once had or, in the worst cases, worn away so badly that they’re completely unrecognizable - a clear sign they need to be replaced. The benefits to getting your clubs regripped are huge, and they can even improve your performance. Take the ALIGN grips from Golf Pride; these have a raised edge on the back (red part of grip seen here) to perfect your hand placement every time. |
|
As you can see, we're currently running a promotion where you can get your 7-iron regripped for FREE; all you need to do is pop in-store and decide which of these grips you want to try out. |
