CMGC looking fine
Don’t you just wish all Januarys could be like this? The weather has been unbelievable, the course is bone dry at the moment with golf buggys on all 27 holes. Below are a few things the lads have been doing out on the course which you may have missed.
Tees and surrounds cut, trees tidied up on the 8th tee and green on badgers, walk way from the 1st of Badgers to the second trees cut back, 5th of Foxes overhanging trees on left side trimmed back with a pole saw, all 27 holes sprayed to reduce moss.
Add this to the general day to day work such as maintaining the greens etc a lot of work has already happened and we are only in the second week of January! Below are a couple of pictures.

Junior European Open 2018 Alcaidesa, Spain
It was Jack’s third year in a row competing in the Junior European Open and my (Josh) second year caddying for him. We knew that this year’s field was tougher than ever but Jack had been working hard on his game throughout 2018 at college and during his spare time. We flew out on Friday, 23 November before having two practice rounds on the Saturday. The qualifying rounds were held between the Sunday to the Wednesday, with those who made the cut playing in the final round on the Thursday. The format was the same as previous years, with the best score from the Links course and the best score from the Heathland course coming together to create an aggregate score before the cut was made.
The course played a lot tougher with the tees pushed back, holes cut to tight pin positions, and the ground being a lot softer than usual due to the poor weather Alcaidesa has seen prior to the event. As you can see in the photo, we certainly saw the best of the weather! The scores that came in reflected the tough playing conditions, and Jack certainly had to battle it out at times! However, he was able to put together a couple of decent rounds to qualify for the final with ease.
The final round was played on the Links course, Jack realised that he was too many shots behind the leaders to have any real contention of winning. Nevertheless, he went out there and played some tidy golf and finished in the top 30! The Sky Sports cameras followed the final group expecting one of them to be the upcoming Champion. However, with three holes to go, all three players in the final group lost their nerve and dropped several shots between them. This meant that a competitor in an earlier group, who finished on two under for the tournament, actually ended up becoming the Champion.
Once again this was another great experience for Jack, who still has plenty of golfing opportunities ahead of him. He will be too old to compete in the under 18’s category of the Tournament next year. Nevertheless, there is an 18-21 category that Jack will have the chance to qualify for. So good luck to Jack for him and his golfing career in the upcoming years.

January Stableford
It was a chilly Saturday followed by a much milder Sunday this weekend, where there was a great turn out for the Men’s Weekend Stableford with a total of 71 members playing. With this many people playing, there was bound to be some great scores to come in. Adrian Nash on Saturday finished with a very nice 37 points despite the much cooler conditions, he was however beaten on countback by Dave Mendham, who played on Sunday. Dave has had an amazing month and is really going through a purple patch at the moment.
His performance this week however wasn’t enough to catch Tom Quinn, who played Saturday as one of the last ones to tee off in the competition, Tom came in with a very solid 39 points. Tom has been up at the club quite a bit recently and is really keen to improve on his game in 2019.

In Division One, no one on Saturday could quite battle through the cold snap to put a score in to fight off anyone playing on Sunday. Andy Johnson had to settle for third place with 38 points, by beating four other players on countback.
James Whitehouse was able to go two points better than Andy to finish in second place with 40 points. The day however belonged to Chris Rigby, who took the top spot in Division One with a brilliant 41 points. Chris has always been a steady player and always manages to hold his game together for the whole round! Well done to Tom and Chris.
A special mention goes out to Grant Carbines, who managed to get a Hole-In-One on the 6th Badgers Sett on Saturday. Grant admitted after his round that there was a small amount of use of the hill that is short of the green. Nevertheless, this is Grant’s second Hole-In-One! Congratulations to Grant!

Midlands Air Ambulance
A big well done and thank you to members, visitors and friends of Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club who helped raise £2917.00 for the Midlands Air Ambulance. Just before Christmas, Club Captain Jamie Fearnley and last year’s Seniors Captain Garry Hawes had the honour of presenting the cheque to Maria Jones from the Midlands Air Ambulance.
The Midlands Air Ambulance receives no Government or National Lottery funding. Each Midlands Air Ambulance mission costs £2,500 and in excess of £9 million is needed each year to keep its three air ambulances operational, which is donated entirely by the public and local businesses.
Once again, a big thank you to everyone who donated and fund raised towards this fantastic total.

A new year always brings with it a sense of renewed motivation when it comes to improving your golf game – and 2019 isn’t any different. So, before you head to the course next, go into the garage and give your equipment the once-over to make sure all is in order for the year ahead. |
| What will you find inside yours?
|
|
Is it half-broken tees and scuffed golf balls galore in there? Perhaps your glove is so tattered you don’t know which holes are for your fingers? |
What about your grips: have they worn away so badly that you have a better chance at holding on to the shaft? Or maybe the leather upper on your shoes is beginning to crack? |
Whatever it is, come and speak to us – we can fix you up with the best the golf industry has to offer, from tees to shoes to any accessory you can think of. |
