| [*END*] Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter.
As I write this, the weather is currently a crisp 20 degrees and stunning sunshine, the pictures below show some really nice Autumn colours forming. This week it has been business as usual for us all, the grass has slowed down in its growth although still germinating. The greens have had some more top dressing added to keep the surface nice and smooth.
Enjoy the read. |
Did you know?
A question we get asked all the time is what type of soil the course is built on; the answer is sandstone plates. This means the course drains really well when windy as the water blows off the top and filters through the sandstone.
The lake on the 9th of Foxes was built to hold the irrigation water because this was the only area that could be found to be clay based, the lake was moulded in clay to retain the water.
Several clay based courses have experienced cracks in the ground and little grass coverage after the hot summer, so we are very pleased with how our course has held up this year. Hopefully we can have a good winter to keep everyone playing over the colder months.

Pairs winners Congratulations to Phil and Steve Lau who narrowly defeated Rich Wright and Rob Corbett on Sunday in the Pairs Knockout Final. |
Playing the 18th all square Rob Corbett chipped it to foot to secure his par and put the pressure on Steve who was over 40 feet away off the green.
Some average chipping throughout the match and possibly some nerves meant Steve chose to putt and much to his and Phil's delight the putt found the bottom of the cup!
Steve and Phil have now won the Pairs Knockout three times after victories in 2010 and 2014, will they be able to defend the title next year or will they have to wait another four years. |

Captains Classic
The one event of the year where every member is hoping to beat the Captain (Jamie) and the Pro (Amy) for a bottle of wine and bragging rights! It was great to see so many playing in the competition on Sunday. For the Captains Classic there is a trophy for the pair that have the best score and the top six pairs that beat Jamie and Amy’s score would also win a bottle of a wine. |
Jamie and Amy knew they needed to post a high score to compete with all the other likely high scores that would be shot. There was a steady trickle of 40+ points recorded, with Alan Hall and Pete Stevens, Ian Gough and Paul Harrison and Paul Judge and George Blakeway shooting 42 points per pair. Father and son duo Paul and Jem Jones kept the family arguments to a minimum scoring a fantastic 44 points between them, which most weeks would be a awesome score to win, however, the Captains Classic Trophy belonged to John Gallagher and Mark Thompson (Tommo). Tommo had scored just three points in the Wednesday Roll Up and was contemplating swapping from playing left handed to right handed as he believed this might be the cure. However, with his friend Gal alongside him they shot a fantastic 47 points to take home the trophy. |
|
The following top six pairs won themselves a bottle of wine: Mark Thompson and John Gallagher, Paul Jones and Jem Jones, Ian Gough amd Paul Harrison, Paul Judge and George Blakeway, Alan Hall and Pete Stevens, John King and Les Stanford. |

Sometimes it's nice to reminisce about the good times. When it comes to golf, the days of persimmon woods, small clubheads and hitting balls which were hard as a rock are long gone - but it can help to take a trip down memory lane to remind us of just how much technology has developed, particularly in the case of drivers. |
Time tunnel
Take Titleist for example; you might have been lucky enough to own its 905R driver way back in 2006. The 905R featured a distinctive pear-shaped profile, with a shallow face set naturally square at address to boost confidence at address. Like many of the drivers back then, it had a titanium head which is a lot heavier than what you'll find in today's drivers. The 905R is a classic club, and is certainly remembered with fondness. Fast-forward to the present day, and Titleist has released its most technologically advanced drivers to date in the form of TS2 and TS3. The TS2 is designed for pure speed, with forgiveness and accuracy across the face for straighter drives and a modern clubhead shape. The TS3 has a more classic design, and features an adjustable swing weight and centre of gravity, making it easy to fit to your swing. So, whilst it is nice to think about your first ever driver, it's probably time to get up to speed with the latest models such as the TS2 or TS3. Who knows? Maybe in another 10 years time, you'll be looking back on the TS models with as much fondness as the 905R?
