Greetings from Cleobury Mortimer
Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club - Director of Golf

As another week passes us by I found myself having a bit of a nostalgia moment and reflecting on what a great season of golf we have so far had. The weather has been great, the course always performing and the service levels throughout the club from the warm welcome to the food service better than ever before. Just when you think things cannot get much better we have a weekend like the one just gone for the club championships, three words WHAT A WEEKEND.

The sun was shining, there was a packed field and a brilliant atmosphere around the club. A very special mention must go to the greenkeepers who got the course condition spot on. The course was tough but fair and the greens in stunning condition. If you see any of the team out on the course when you are playing make sure you give them a tip of the cap. Also a massive thanks to Srixon golf for the ball fitting day on Saturday, hopefully some of you have seen benefits from a fitted golf ball.

Club Championships Report and Pictures From the Final Day.

The members of Cleobury Mortimer golf club were graced with glorious sunshine over the two day 36 hole club championships. Again congratulations to the greenstaff who got the course condition absolutely perfect the greens had been rolled and double cut every day leading up to the championships. On day one Josh Carpenter the strong favourite for the gross title shot a 70 to be 4 clear of Phil Lau. The nett was however much more congested Richard Wright, Rob Winnall, Bryan Colley, David Annetts and Phil Lau were all in the mix however Gary Hingley sat at the top with a 67 and a one shot lead going into day two.

With intense pressure surrounding the place some players were clearly nervous heading into day 2. Josh Carpenter however cruised to victory in the gross with a one under 70. The nett was, like day one, a lot tighter with many of the players who had a good round on Saturday falling away. One man however held his cool and nerve to shoot a 2 over 73 and finish level for the tournament to eventually win by 6 shots and that man was Gary Hingley.

When presented with the trophy's Josh Carpenter confirmed the rumours that he is to turn professional in October and that it was his last tournament as an amateur. Gary Hingley thanked his playing partners and praised the course and in particular the greens and bunkers. Gary travels over 30 miles to play Cleobury 3 times a week and a truly worthy winner.

We are pleased to say our new scorecards have arrived! Unfortunately we had some delays in delivery because we had to redesign the cover of the card to accommodate our new sponsor LWC. We have had such a busy summer season this year that we have used well over our normal amount of 20,000 cards causing us to use a temporary card for a few days while the new cards were being printed. LWC are our new drinks supplier and were very keen to sponsor the scorecards and to use CMGC as a venue to entertain and invite other clients and publicans. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all our sponsors who support the club in many different ways - on scorecards, Buggies and tee markers. We hope our members and guests support these local businesses who provide such a wide range of goods and services

Staff Expansion

We are delighted to announce that from September 19th we will have two coaches on site for PGA golf lessons plus Amy Millward as an assistant. Many of you will know the partnership that we have with the number 1 golf shop and Stone Driving Range offering free custom fittings for CMGC members in their state of the art fitting studio. It therefore was a logical step for us at CMGC to approach head professional Rob Grier of Stone driving range. Rob has been a family friend for over 20 years and can often be seen playing CMGC, he actually lives in Cleobury and commutes to Stone. Rob is an advanced PGA professional and boasts European tour players as some of his regular clients. Rob will be joined at Cleobury by his head coach and second in command at Stone Sam Pain. Many of you will also know Sam as a former club champion and county player.

CMGC managers Robert and Graham added 'with the club becoming so busy we wanted to expand our coaching offering and with Rob Grier we felt it was the logical step. He has a proven track record of coaching success and is well known within the local area we believe that Rob, Sam and Amy can increase our coaching to all levels and continue to grow the game within South Shropshire and beyond.

Rob added 'I am delighted to be coaching at CMGC having lived in the area all my life I know what the club is all about. I am confident that myself, Sam and Amy can become the leaders in coaching and custom fitting within a 30 mile radius'.

Amy currently plays off a handicap of 8 and is planning on getting that down to 6 by the New Year and then enrolling onto the PGA course. Amy is a local girl and has represented the county at all levels, she will be doing between 20 - 30 hours a week in the golf centre and also helping develop the junior section specifically the junior girls. Many of you would have met Amy at the weekend, if you have not please give her a warm CMGC welcome.

From 2015 that gives the option of 3! Things at CMGC have never been better and these additional teaching options have been given to cope with demand.

In next weeks newsletter we will have a very special lesson promotion to all CMGC members.

Final Sweep of the Year

The Ryder Cup is just over two weeks away and that means one thing…. The final CMGC sweep of the year. Captains McGinley and Watson have confirmed their wild card picks and we have put each player from Team Europe and Team USA into a sealed envelope. Once all the envelopes have been sold they are to be opened to reveal your player to watch.

Each envelope is £5

The winner of the sweep will be the player with the highest points scored. In the event of a tie the winner will be determined by the biggest win margin in the singles, if that is a tie to goes back to the Saturday afternoon four balls and so on.

There will also be a prize for the biggest win in the singles, just to make it a little fairer as not all players will be playing every match.

Just a little something to make it a bit more interesting when watching as we all know Team Europe will trounce them!

Captains Away Day

The captain's away day is filling up fast with 26 players already confirmed. All the details can be found on the poster below. Simply pop into the golf centre or call us on 01299 271 112 to book your slot.

John Lacey Texas Scramble is now up to 21 teams!

21 teams are now in for the John Lacey Memorial texas scramble in 2 weeks time.

We expect this to easily get up to 25 teams maybe even 30. It is therefore going to be one hell of a tournament with some brilliant prizes up for grabs.

Please call the golf centre on 01299 271 112 to book your tee time in.

PING G30

It's not just tour players likeBubba Watson who are getting the most out PING's new G30. The latest series of woods from PING are proving to be a big hit with club golfers; the crown turbulators helping to generate faster clubhead speed for longer, more accurate tee shots.
