Golf Course Maintenance Work. Towards the end of 2017 you may remember that we invested a significant amount of money to have an expert consultant from STRI spend a day with us at the golf course going through everything on the golf course hole by hole. A couple of weeks after the visit we received our report and started putting together our plan for the next few years. There should be a plan for selected removal and thinning of tree copses to ensure there is age and species diversity. Many copses are too densely planted, making areas difficult to access with maintenance equipment. Tree management should be a phased project to ensure the ecology is not damaged. Work you may recall included the 2nd on Badgers, 8th on Badgers, 8th Deer park, 1st Foxes. 7th Foxes and a few other areas. Increase the frequency of aeration to improve aerobic and drainage potential. Increasing the frequency of aeration to improve aerobic and drainage potential is ongoing, this includes verti-cutting, Air2G2, scarifying, slitting as well as deep tine aeration such as verti-draining and hollow coring. We are also as regularly applying a light sand dressing to the greens every couple of weeks to improve the smoothness of the surfaces as well as improving the drainage and organic matter of the greens. Now we are in to the season we have had the opportunity to start some of the bunker work that was advised. Hole 2 Foxes Run - remove rear bunker. Work has started on the rear bunker, cores from greens used to help fill the bunker. After the ground has settled, work will be carried out to blend the area back in. Hole 4 Foxes Run - 2 fairway bunkers need drainage improvement. Remove rear right green side bunker. The rear right greenside bunker has been removed, this will create a larger walk off area from the green, reducing the stress on the grass in this area. Work on the fairway bunkers has yet to commence, but is an area that we have identified for improvement. Hole 5 Badgers Sett - right greenside bunkers are ok and very interesting. Remove left greenside bunker and improve contouring of the green surround. Work to improve contouring of the green surround to the left-hand side and removal of the left greenside bunker has begun. Hole 9 Badgers Sett - Remove left fairway bunkers and allow replacement with strategic planting of trees (transplant trees). Keep right side fairway bunkers. Removal of the left fairway bunkers has started and the strategic planting of trees will follow. Hole 3 Deer Park - Interesting snaking bunker around left side of green but needs some shaping work. Shaping work has begun on the bunker with the snaking bunker on the left side of the green remaining. Mounding will be improved at the front to aid water run off areas which has historically been a problem area. Hole 5 Deer Park - Consider filling in left greenside bunker and improve run off surround. Work has begun on this area; the soil just needs to dry out and be seeded. - Additional work recently carried out
- Drainage ditches on the 6th on Foxes and 6th on Deer Park have been re-dug to help with better drainage in the wetter months. - New mounding has been constructed on the 8th Deer Park to help water flow away from the green in the wetter months. - New path added on the 5th on Deer Park. Road planings to be added in due course. Bunkers have been topped up with fresh sand. As you will quickly see quite a lot of work has been carried out over the last few weeks and months as well as the team carrying out all the other essential jobs to maintain the golf course. We are pleased with the work so far and after having a read through, hopefully you will have a good understanding of why some of the work above has being carried out. Additional work is still to be carried out on certain bunkers including re-vetting faces, re-shaping of certain bunkers & improving drainage; however, all these jobs cannot be carried out overnight, but will take place when conditions allow. We will also be having some extra hazard and out of bounds posts arriving soon that will go out on the course as soon as they arrive.
