Greetings from Cleobury Mortimer
Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club - Director of Golf

Good day golfers and friends of CMGC, another week passes us by and once again it is another busy week at the one and only CMGC. Considering the work the greens had on them last week I cannot fault them they are already back to their best. Myself and Team CMGC can certainly vouch for them as we have all been out playing several times this week. If anyone fancies a knock with me Thursday and Friday evenings are good just get in touch!

The picture below was taken on Saturday before Presidents Day and really shows how good it is at the moment. It is always nice to get feedback from visitors and we had Elmdon Park golf club here who tweeted we this…

It was great to see the place buzzing on Saturday with members and visitors all enjoying CMGC a big thank you to everyone who supported the cost price sale we ran. It totally blew us away with the support, hopefully many of you picked up a bargain or two.

President's day 2014 - 16/8/14

Club president Tom Straughton once again put on a fantastic event for his president's day. The members of CMGC were out in force to give their support to the Cleobury legend who does so much for the club despite being 84 years old. This unique event is played over all 27 holes making it a true test of golf endurance. With prizes for the best 27, 18 and 9 holes scores.

Duncan Trow and Adam Winnall both continued their fine form posting a nett 67 in the 18 hole competition. However they were both beaten by John Gaskell who also had a 67 but a superior back count handed him first place. It is a great result for John to bag a major trophy competition after a series of lessons with head professional Phil Moore. It really does show the benefits of lessons. Ian Dennis won the 9 holes trophy with a sublime putting display after just having a fatter grip put on his putter to give more control over the shorter putts.

The day however belonged to one of the CMGC proteges, Jack Severn held his nerve over the 27 holes to shoot two under his handicap and win by two from his nearest competitor. Jack has had a great year at CMGC and is a county regular playing for Worcestershire and is still only 14 years old!

A huge thank you to Tom for hosting the events he pays for the sandwiches and covers the entry fee, a true asset to the club.

Club Championships!

Many of you have already got your names down for the biggest tournament at CMGC and we will shortly be doing our yearly video. With many of you giving your predictions, we are also doing a little prediction sweep, which is free to enter. Basically when you are next in the golf centre we will ask who you think will win the gross and nett. Whoever predicts the correct player for each category wins a dozen golf balls. (In the event of a tie a winner will be randomly selected).

A massive buzz is around the club at the moment and this is set to continue! Cannot wait for it!

We have also teamed up with FootJoy to run a special glove promo on the Saturday of club championships. We will give you a brand new glove to use for the round if you like it you can buy it for the multi buy price (£12.50 for Sci Flex or £9 for GTX) if not you simply give it us back.

Bit of a no brainer but FootJoy are that confident in their gloves you will be converted!

Saturday 20th September John Lacey Texas Scramble

Still looking for another ten teams to take this event over the 100 player mark. John was a legend of CMGC and this open competition was started in his memory. Every year over 30 teams play and we want to see this continue. Tell your mates or get them in your team, it is an open so a big pot will be on show to the winner. The start sheet is in the men's changing rooms.

New beers behind the bar!

We have recently cut a new deal with LWC of Hereford to have all of our alcohol from them. I am not a big drinker but have to admit an ice cold pint of Coors won't go a miss after 18 holes. We are also contemplating getting BT Sport at CMGC for the football season. We love some feedback from you, the members and friends, do you think it is worth it and would you come up and watch the matches? Just something we are considering to unite the membership? Please speak to myself or Graham next time you are at CMGC.

Emily Price

Here is the match report from England V Switzerland - nice when you see CMGC's Emily Price as the star performer on her debut!! Well done Emily... future LPGA tour player for sure!

England Girls score 'convincing' win over Switzerland

England's girls scored a convincing 7-2 win over Switzerland in their U16 international at Heswall Golf Club in Cheshire.

They played in difficult conditions of blustery winds and some rain which, coupled with the fast greens, set a tough challenge. But they coped well, particularly in the afternoon singles.

England coach Scott Godfrey commented: "For some of the girls this was the first time they'd played at this level and they enjoyed it, got on well as a team and produced a good result. It was a convincing win."

The team led 2-1 after the morning foursomes, thanks to a turnaround in fortunes by Mollie Lawrence of Kent and Amelia Williamson of Norfolk. They were four down with eight to play but won on the last to give England the advantage. "We were looking at going into lunch down but they played the back nine very, very well and gave us a lead," said Scott.

Natasha Slater went out first in the singles and kept the momentum going. The new Scottish U14 champion from Cumbria had a handful of birdies in the front nine and led by three at the turn, before winning 4/3. "She got us off to a great start," said Scott.

English U15 champion Emily Price soon followed her in to the winner's circle with a 7/6 success - despite losing the first hole! The Warwickshire player was under par for her match, producing an outstanding performance for the team.

Solid play brought wins for Amelia Williamson and Martha Lewis of Surrey. Meanwhile, Lancashire's Louisa Brunt was trailing by one hole with four to play, but fashioned a strong finish, helped by a couple of birdies, to win on the last.

 Foursomes

Martha Lewis (St George's Hill) & Natasha Slater (Furness) lost to Aja Ruoss & Tiffany Arafi 6/5 Mollie Lawrence (Rochester & Cobham Park) & Amelia Williamson (Royal Cromer) beat Klara Wildhaber & Victoria Monod 1 up
Louisa Brunt (Royal Birkdale) & Emily Price (Cleobury Mortimer) beat Yael Berger & Charlotte Alran 2 up

Singles

Williamson beat Wildhaber 2/1
Slater beat Ruoss 4/3
Lewis beat Berger 2/1
Lawrence lost to Arafi 1 down
Price beat Monod 7/6
Brunt beat Alran 1 up

Preparing for club championships

Rain gloves - these gloves actually get stickier the wetter it gets, if rain is forecast these are an essential item as they will stop the club twisting.

FootJoy singles £12
FootJoy pairs £20
Srixon pairs £15

Re-grips will make old clubs feel like new. We have an extensive range at CMGC we offer 24 hour turn around the big seller at the moment is the new Lamkin UTX (as Matt shows) which has seen the likes of Rose, Poulter and Rose start using. The are normally £14 fitted but in the lead up to the club championships we are offering £10 fitted per grip. I can certainly vouch for these they are very tacky and feel great especially on wedges and woods.

This grip is ideal for players looking for a great feeling grip that provides a confident connection in wet conditions… perfect for England!
