Another busy week here at CMGC as the season gets ready to begin and The Masters is knocking on the door ready to start! The better weather has started to show its face this week so it’s been all hands on deck to get the course back into shape.
Thankfully the weather forecast that stated a White Easter has changed and all we need to now is hope that the rain misses us as well!

Greenkeepers on fire The team have been flat out this week. All the greens have been hollow cored, we then let them breath for three days before applying the top dressing. We decided to let them breath for as long as possible to dry out. The top dressing was applied Monday to fill in the core holes. The top-dressing mix will wick the moisture and give a nice level playing surface on the greens.

It is also their favourite time of the year. The first proper cut after winter. It's hard to beat some stripes and definition. Tees, fairways, greens and surrounds all cut. Greens top dressed and rolled. Now that’s what you call a productive Monday. Considering last Monday the course was white over it is quite a turnaround! Click on this image to watch the video.

Tee signs A big thank you to the very generous Mark Greenfield and his team at MG Shopfronts for the donation of the new tee signs. Badgers Set are installed and Foxes and Deer will follow shortly. Sponsorship opportunities will be available once they have all been installed and finished off. Little touches like this will make all the difference to the course. What do you all think of them? Hopefully with the size of these it will make it super easy to navigate around the course if people have never played it before. Taster Membership Our Taster Membership starts on the 1st April and its greats to welcome some new members to the club. We still have a few spaces left which is 3 months membership, plus a golf lesson for just £150.00. With plenty of competitions, matches and golf to be played now is the time to join CMGC. Cook Required With the season fast approaching we are looking to recruit a cook to join our small team providing all types of catering requirements. Responsibilities will include; - Preparing, cooking and assembling a wide variety of foods including breakfasts, sandwiches, simple salads, desserts and vegetables.
- Stock control.
- Kitchen hygiene.
- Ensuring all food produced is of a consistent high standard.
- 4-5 days a week for approximately 30 – 40 hours.

Winter Series The final Winter Series took place at Upper Sapey GC on Wednesday 21st March with Josh and Tom eager to dethrone Dave and finally end his winning streak. A coffee and bacon roll was quickly followed by the team draw. Out first were Dave, Simon Johnson, Dave Balmer and Mark Palmer. Followed by Josh, Ian Dorrell, Clive Jordan and Geoff King. Tom was out last with Andy Johnson, Mark Greenfield and Maurice Clarke in the hope that it would help speed Josh up. Just kidding Josh! This week we played best two from four, with all four scores to count on Par 3s. Sapey has 6 par 3s, so the pressure was on. Dave’s team played fairly consistent finishing on 92 points and were left wondering if a couple of three putts toward the end of the round would come back to haunt them. Josh’s team also finished on 92 points helped in part by Ian's birdie on the 18th; could Tom’s team pull something out of the bag or could we be set for a playoff? With the scores tight, Mark Greenfield stepped up and drained a monster putt on the 17th for birdie, Maurice then made a par with a shot and the team walked off the par 3 17th with 10 points. Another 5 points on the 18th and the team finished on 97 points; finally Dave has been defeated. During the round we had three nearest the pins, with Ian Dorrell picking up prizes on the 6th & 17th and Andy Johnson on the 11th. Our last set of prizes went to the team with the best score on the six pars 3s. Dave’s teamed finished on 40 points with Josh and Tom’s team tied on 44 points. A Putt-Off would then decide the winner, click the image below to see a video of the Putt-Off! A big thank you to everyone who has played and supported the Winter Series over the last few weeks, we will definitely be doing them again.

Steve bakes up a win The Men's Stableford on Saturday saw a good turnout for the first qualifier of the year. After having a few months to work on the swing it was time to test out whether you could find the fairway and post a good score. Greg Hester shot 36 points to take second place in Division 2 with Adam Cook also shooting 36 points to take second place in Division 1. |
Ken Lewis, playing off 10 also shot 36 points, but with a superior back count, Ken was able to pip Adam to top spot. Ken has just joined the club from Wharton Park and it is great to see him playing in competitions and getting in the prizes. In Division 2 Steve Evans played a flawless round finishing with 37 points to take top spot. Steve is a local baker and had just finished a full shift before heading straight to the club for a round. Sadly, I missed him to get a picture, but found this one… Throw back to 2012!

Masters sweep Everyone knows that when The Masters starts, the golf season is beginning and the countdown is officially on! 9 days today until The Masters officially starts! Of course, it isn’t a Major until CMGC has a sweep! As always all the names confirmed for the Masters are in a bag and are ready to be drawn out with your name beside it! The sweep is 2 picks for £5! There has been some great golf played in the upcoming weeks to The Masters, so it is anybody’s event to win!

The teams predictions
We always like to look after you… so here are our predictions for this years US Masters.

Tom Hideki Matsuyama 35/1 – Winner Matsuyama is ranked 6th in the world rankings, so is without a doubt an incredible golfer. Yet to win a Major, but has finished 5th, 7th and 11th in The Masters over the last 3 years. He will win a Major at some point in his career and this could well be the week he does it.

Tyrell Hatton 60/1 – Each way Barring injury, Tyrell will be on the European Ryder Cup team in September and over the last couple of years he has performed on some big occasions. A good finish in the recent WGC event in Mexico and also made it out of his group in the WGC Matchplay losing 2&1 to Cameron Smith in the last 16, who was 8 under par at the time. This is Tyrell’s second appearance at Augusta having missed the cut in 2017, but I do think he may be worth a small bet each way. |
Josh Justin Thomas 10/1 - Winner Why wouldn’t you? I mean, have you seen what JT has done in the past 16 months? The American may only have a best Masters finish of T22, but he has only played in the Major twice! It’s only a matter of time before he gets to Number 1 in the world, so it may as well be this year that he picks up his first Green Jacket!

Tiger Woods 12/1 – Each way Tiger has made several attempts to get back onto the golfing scene, but for different reasons each time, he has fallen back into the background. This time he has launched himself right back up there, with finishes of T2, T5 and 12th in this past month alone. It would be rude not to consider him to finish in the Top 10 at this year’s Masters, let alone a possible win! As we all know, he has a wealth of knowledge and experience around Augusta, and with his current consistent form, I believe he will be throwing his name into the ring as a solid contender this year.

Dave Justin Rose 14/1 - Winner Justin Rose is just Mr Nice Guy, you cannot imagine him loosing his temper. At one point in the final round in 2017 Justin had a three-shot lead over Sergio and let it slip. Then in the interview he was a gracious as ever. I think he has unfinished business at Augusta and this year he will go all the way. At 14/1 he is just outside the big favourites. He will go under the radar and be the man to beat. |

Cameron Smith 125/1 – Each way The young Aussie has been on the PGA Tour for a couple of years now and is always up there. In his eight tournaments this year he has been inside the top 20, five times. He makes a lot of birdies and if he can keep the bogeys off the card he will be in with a great chance each way.

Amy Paul Casey 22/1 – Winner Paul Casey is a name that keeps getting mentioned, he’s in good form and has recently won on the PGA Tour. His odds might not suggest he’s a favourite, but his record from the last 3 Masters events are a T6, T4 & 6th. Someone who has consistently played well around one of the toughest courses on tour is surely close to picking up that Green Jacket!

Charl Schwartzel 100/1 – Each way Charl is a previous Masters Champion and finished 3rd in last year’s Masters. He understands what it takes to win around Augusta. He’s been working closely with Justin Parsons, Director of Instruction
at BHSG and making some swing changes, so I wouldn’t rule him out making a Top 5 finish.
