2017 Junior European Open Myself (Josh), Jack Severn and his parents Scott and Sandra Severn travelled to the south of Spain on 25th November to compete in the 2017 Junior European Open, after Jack qualified at Telford GC back in August. I went with Jack to caddy for him, as I had caddied for him when he qualified at Telford! The Tournament consisted of 4 qualifying days (2 days on each course), followed by the final day for those who made the cut. It was a gross score tournament, so it was definitely going to be tough to compete. The Tournament took place at Alcaidesa Golf Resort, a 36-hole complex made up of an 18-hole heathland course and an 18-hole links course. Originally, the best score from the heathland and the best score from the links was combined to produce your tournament score going into the final day.
Jack started on Sunday on the heathland course and shot a very impressive 5 under gross to put him in 2nd place after day 1. It seemed like nothing could go wrong for Jack, always finding the fairway, pitching and chipping it close to the pin and holing putts! The pressure was ever so slightly off him at this point as he had already got a very strong score in on the heathland course. Monday was tougher as the wind had picked up and this was reflected by the scoring shown throughout the field. Along with the wind, Jack also struggled with reading the putts and so finished on 7-over for the second day.
On the 3rd qualifying day we moved onto the links course, which offered some spectacular views (as seen in the photos)! Jack put in a very good score of 1-over, even though he knew he could have done better if it wasn’t for a few small mistakes! Despite this, Jack made the cut with ease, his 4-under for the tournament had him very nicely in 4th place! |
