Scratch Team Report. The C.M.G.C Scratch Team finished their league campaign on Sunday 20th August at home against a strong Oxley Park side. In the reverse fixture we came up just short losing 4.5 - 3.5, so we knew it would be tight match. Tom managed to put the first point on the board with a 6 & 4 victory, quickly followed by the ever-dependable Charlie Edwards who also managed victory by the same margin. Josh managed a good half point against Oxley’s Club Champion, before a couple of games went the way of Oxley.
With two matches still out on the course and with the rain moving in, we trailed 2 ½ - 3 ½. Andy Young, after a difficult start found himself three down through 8, but battled back and stood on the 18th (9th Foxes) one up. Andy showed no nerves with a steady par, which was enough to give him victory and brought us level at 3 ½ - 3 ½, leaving the result hinging on the last game. Paul Jones, playing in the anchor match found himself leading early on, but as he stood on the 18th the match was all-square. Two good shots from Paul put him on the green in regulation and with his opponent making a bogey, Paul managed to two putt and take the game 1up, handing us a 4½ – 3 ½ victory.
Overall the season has gone well with the team winning all their home games along with several new players joining the team. The team now turn their attention to the remaining club competitions and knockouts before they tee it up again in the league next April. A big thank you to Scott Severn, Jack Severn, Josh Rowbotham, Charlie Edwards, Phil Lau, Stu Humphries, Adam Winnall, Ross Moorcroft, John Brazier, Ash Cook, Dean Rogers, Paul Jones, Andy Young and Guy Taylor for all contributing to the season.
CMGC Matches
The latest round of this season’s men’s’ friendly matches took place on Saturday 19th August when twelve guys from Cleobury travelled down to Burghill Valley Golf Club to defend the Burghill-Cleobury Shield. After a tasty and large breakfast, the matches teed off. After completion of five of the matches, things could not be any tighter with the scores at two and half each. Reports from the course were that Cleobury were up in the final match, so things were looking good. Standing at the side of the 18th green as the final match came to a conclusion, it was plain to see just how hard our final pairings were fighting for that final point, but unfortunately they were just pipped at the end by some inspired golf from the final Burghill pairing. So Cleobury will just have to win the shield back next season when the patch is played at home.
