Pros news

Hello one and all once again from Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club.

Another week passes us by and as usual we have plenty to report! The weather looks set for a good few days and as the picture below shows the greens are looking impressively green! The bit of rain we have had has made everything nice and lush and the lads on the greenkeeping team have been flat out cutting.

This weekend isn't that busy, so if your looking for a game give us a call or if a visitor booking online here.

New Members

The membership has continued to grow across all sections a big welcome to James Evans, Rob Humphries, John Peutherer, Oliver Moore, Jason Chance, Steve Barker, Declan, Keith & Elaine Fitzhenry, Jenny & Robert French, Greg Hester, Phil Rennie, Martin Bond, Ian & Janet Ludford, Joe Harper, Anne Lowe, Chris Rigby; who have all joined since June 1st. A big welcome to the club and we hope you enjoy being a member.

Course Work

As mentioned the lads have been busy cutting grass after the rain has caused a growth spurt. However young Kieran Hall is now doing two hours in the morning on restoring some of our pools.

He has been busy on the 6th of Badgers, which isn't quite finished yet but as shown here on the 4th of Badgers, he has done a great job.

The area that once was almost marsh land has been cleaned, edged and re-filled and as pictured shows a great transformation. Look out for the 2nd, 4th, 5th of Deer Park and the 9th ditch on Foxes Run which are next on his hit list.

Rainbow Cancer Golf Day

The Rainbow Cancer Care Foundation Gold Day is fast approaching. Over 170 golfers will be taking to the fairways this Friday.

Due to this record turn out in numbers, the day has now changed from its traditional two-tee start to a one-tee start. Teams will be teeing off from 8.30 am until 2pm, however if you would still like to enter a team please get in touch as soon as possible. The Foundation has raised thousands of pounds and this year has the support of four key sponsors:

- Streetbike Motorcycle Sales (Halesowen)
- Rygor Mercedes Benz Ltd (Worcester)
- Thermotec Plastics Ltd (Birmingham)
- Motorline Toyota Ltd (Stourbridge)

Streetbike, Rygor and Toyota Stourbridge will be showcasing some of their fantastic products on the day. Charity day founder, Angela Gaskell, had this to say;

"We are delighted to once again get the support of these fantastic businesses along with all our other event sponsors that have supported us year on year. The charity as grown massively over the last couple of years and to have retained this level of sponsorship is a great help to us."

Men's Double Roll

It was another sunny weekend for the Men's Double Roll Up on the 1st and 2nd July. With some rain during the week the greens were receptive to good-quality shots, whilst players were still benefitting from fast and firm fairways.

Early starter Colm Berry shot an impressive 24 points on his outward 9, before settling for 38 points, which was matched by Paul Harrison and Andy Young. John Westley edged himself ever closer to a 10 handicap after breaking out of the pack with 39 points, but it was Paul Liggins who took the spoils on day one. Paul cruised through the front nine with 22 points and held it together on the back 9 shooting 20 points for a fantastic 42 points overall.

On the Sunday Ashley Cook shot 39 points reducing his handicap to 8.9, whilst Louie Edwards, back from University for the summer, shot a 6 over par gross, 42 points to see his handicap cut to 10.6.

Congratulations to Paul Liggins and Louie Edwards for those fantastic scores and to everyone else who managed to shoot under their handicap. We have a Stableford on this Sunday for anyone looking for some competition golf this weekend.

Player Of The Month

Well done to Abbie Johnson who was named 'Player Of The Month'. After her hole in one and some great wins in the junior team, Abbie was voted the unanimous winner by the club committee. Well done Abbie.

Men's Handicap Team

The Men's handicap team completed their home matches recently with a fixture against Droitwich Golf Club. The team knew they needed a convincing victory to have any chance of reaching the semi finals and the team certainly didn't disappoint.

Pars and birdies were flying in around the course for the Cleobury players with victories for; Ash Cook and Lewis Hodges 3&1, Steve Lau and Simon Johnson 5&4, Nigel Williams and Paul Liggins 4&2, John Westley and Andy Johnson 7&5, plus Ad Cook and Matt Fairman 3&2; giving the team an overall 5-1 victory.

Well played to the team and best of luck for your remaining fixtures.

Scratch Team

The CMGC Scratch Team were back in action on Sunday 22nd June with a tricky home game against Dudley Golf Club. With Jack Severn away on county duty, it was left to Josh Rowbotham to lead the team out. In a tight game Josh made a nice up and down on the 18th for par to edge his game 1up and give the team the first point. Phil Lau, playing second, also had a tight game and just like Josh managed to edge his game on the last and give CMGC their second point.

Adam Winnall secured the third point, again with a 1up victory, tense stuff! Dean Rogers kept up his 100% winning record with a 2&1 win, before victories for Paul Jones (4&3) and Ross Moorecroft (2&1) saw CMGC to a 6-2 victory. The season has so far flown by with just 3 matches left, two away and one at home. Hopefully the team can pick up some crucial away points and push on for promotion.

Shop news

New Shoes

Some would say there have been some big changes in the golf shoe industry over the past few years. However, with shoes sales at CMGC now 70% spikeless, is the shoe market changing?

Comfort and stability are the biggest requests we get from golfers and spikeless golf shoes offer this in the summer.

Whereas in the winter when it starts to get a little wet, that is when it's time for a black pair with new spikes on them.

Come and see Dave, Tom or Amy in the golf centre and they will be able to talk you through the different options available. Or you could be like Paul here, who is holding onto those 1970's golf shoes, get to the furthest point away (6th of Foxes tee), the sole falls off and have to play the last 3 in your socks!

The Open Sweep

Not long to go until the worlds best tee it up at Royal Birkdale for the 146th Open and as usual we will be running our golf centre sweep for a bit of fun. Prizes will once again be from the golf centre and with the cost at £3 a go or two for £5. One of the names to look out for is surely Tommy Fleetwood who is having a fantastic 2017, with two wins including last week in France and a top 4 finish in the US Open. Best of luck to everyone who enters.
