Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club Director of Golf
Hello welcome to yet more ramblings and info from the one and only CMGC!
We have loads to cover this week. As always, we try to cover a bit of everything from success stories, to golf centre offers and of course a bit of banter.
Course wise there is not a lot to report for a change! The lads have just been flat out cutting and getting the course so not a blade of grass is out of place. We had a lot of compliments over the weekend, with many commenting it is the best the course has ever been; wouldn't you agree?

U.S. Open Sweepstake
After what seems like a lifetime ago, the golfing majors are back. The U.S. Open is always a tough one to pick a winner with the course being so tough. Next week we will be giving you our expert advice on who to back. With no Woods or Mickelson, McIlroy coming back from injury and DJ out of form it could be anyone's.
It would not be a major without a sweepstake and this year we have teamed up with our friends at Under Armour. Prize winners will receive vouchers to spend at CMGC and Under Armour have given 15% OFF any Under Armour product to spend with them. Our prices are already cheaper than American Golf and the Under Armour website, so you can get some great gear even cheaper than ever! You get two goes for £5 and they are available from the Golf Centre as of Thursday.
Worcestershire Open Pro-Am
The third annual Worcestershire Open Pro-Am at Cleobury Mortimer was once again a huge success. The greenstaff had been hard at work rolling the greens and getting the definition throughout the course spot on for the various professionals and amateurs from across the county. With team prizes for the top 4 and professionals' individual prizes for the top 5, it was sure to be a close day.
David Finch and his Cleeve Hill team were last out and had the worst of the weather. That did not stop them from winning however with 89 points, pipping Gaudet Luce by 2.
Josh Thorpe and Luke Towler carded 34 and 35 points to take 5th and 4th place. Last year's winner, Daniel Clee, carded 36 to take third in the individual.
The day was however tied, with Adam Whiting and Simon Gabitas both making birdie on 18 to finish 2 under and on 38 points. Both Simon and Adam wished to thank Andy Smith and Kidderminster Self Storage for their kind sponsorship and for the county for the continued support of the event.
A special mention to Amy Millward, who picked up her first prize money as a golf professional. See you all next year!

Captain Bob Lucas hosted a fantastic Captain's Weekend accompanied by Trevor Warman, Heather Pringle and Jack Severn.
Friday night was absolutely buzzing with member John Gallagher and his wife Karen running the roulette table, Aaron Booton playing acoustic hits, Susie on the BBQ and the par 3 course nice and busy.
Saturday was all about the Captain's Cup and Straughton Salvor.
Scoring for the men was tough with Maurice Clarke finishing third on 36 points, Nick Webb was second with 37 points and the day belonged to Matt Fairman.
Now you might remember a few weeks ago I said Matt was the man to watch this year and he has not disappointed with 3 rounds in a row under his handicap. Matt was kind enough to WhatsApp me this Sunday afternoon.
Captain Bob, Heather, Trevor and Jack all wished to thank everyone for their support and donations towards the Captains' Charity.
Ladies' Straughton Salver
As the ladies followed the men to compete in Captains' Weekend, there was one thing on every ladies mind, lifting the Straughton Salver Trophy. One of CMGC Major Trophies!
It was fantastic to see the competition so well supported, with our Junior girls also participating and doing exceptionally well! The weather was kind to us on Saturday with glorious sunshine, and so the ladies enjoyed their round and shot some good scores! The ladies' competition belonged to Junior Rosanna Halls, who has been playing some great golf and has seen her handicap cut to 8!
One of the main highlights of the day was Abbie Johnson scoring a hole in one on the 6th Badgers Sett! Also, winning her the nearest the pin Prize! The Results were as follows:
1st Place - Rosanna Halls
2nd Place - Sue Griffiths
Sue Griffiths had this to say;
"I'm really pleased with how I played and how I have been playing and that's all thanks to Amy's Lessons. We have worked on a couple of things and the difference it has made to my game is incredible! I couldn't be happier as I've seen my handicap reduced! If you are looking to improve your golf, then I would highly recommend booking a lesson with Amy!"
Amy had this to say on her young juniors;
"I (Amy) would just like to say a huge well done to Rosanna, Abbie and Sue for the results on the weekend! They all played some amazing golf! After working with them all personally on their game, the improvements are definitely being seen from shooting some great scores and all the hard work means that it is well deserved!"
Not looking great…
Let’s face it; the weather forecast is looking rather bleak over the coming days, but don’t let this stop you venturing down to the club for a game of golf. If you do find yourself getting drenched on the course, we have a range of Ryder Cup-inspired outerwear from ProQuip with your name on. Think of it as preparation for the winter.
