Hello To All From The CMGC Team

After a stop start week with one minute it feeling like winter, to the next it feeling like summer, we are back to a few days of dry weather. This means it is time to cut some serious grass! Take a look outside at your garden, it will be growing like crazy and this is what is happening at CMGC. All 200 acres are looking so lush now and with the machines constantly going over them, there is no better time to be playing; as the picture below shows.

Book your tee times here.

Club news

Captains' Weekend

Club captains Bob Lucas, Trevor Warman, Heather Pringle and Jack Severn have been busy planning their captains weekend which is fast approaching. It all kicks off on Friday 2nd June with the Seniors' competition in the morning on Deer Park and Foxes run. Then from 5pm the 9 hole Junior competition will run, plus the very sociable Friday night.

There will be a fun 6 hole par 3 course on Foxes Run, a Putting Competition, a Club Challenge, a BBQ, local guitar hero Aarron Booton will be on hand playing his acoustic music with John & Karen Gallagher also running a black jack and roulette table. This is open to everyone; members and guests. It will be a fun night, very sociable and very informal.

Saturday the Men and Ladies battle it out for the Captains' Cup and Plate.

On the Sunday we have The Captains vs Presidents, which will be an 8:30am shotgun start drawn pairs matchplay. After this Aaron Booton will again be playing, this time alongside John Westley (his son, not the golfer) who is an extremely good drummer. A one course buffet will then be served for all competitors throughout the weekend followed by the presentation and then finally The Mixed Competition starting at 3pm. Any family and friends wanting to join the meal on Sunday a nominal fee of £5 will be payable.

Due to family committments, Stuart Humphries has handed the vice captaincy duties over to Jamie Fearnley, who will take over with immediate effect. Jamie will be driving into 'office' in October taking over from Bob Lucas.

Any members wanting to enter, the Seniors', Juniors', Men's and Sunday competition entry sheets are all available in the men's changing rooms. The Ladies' entry sheet is in the ladies changing room and the mixed is in the middle between the two changing rooms.

To complete a busy Captains' Friday, CMGC plays host to The Worcestershire Open Pro Am, this is one of the biggest Pro Am's within the county thanks to the kind sponsorship of Kidderminster Self Storage. Tee times are running from 9am until 1pm.

The Worcestershire Open offers a minimum prize pot of £2000 (based on a minimum 20 teams entering), making it a popular event on the golfing calendar. It is played over the Badgers Sett and Deer Park courses. The day comprises of coffee and bacon roll on arrival, 18 holes and a two course meal to finish. With a great selection of prizes for both professionals and amateurs this is an event not to be missed.

Entry is £180 per team of four. If anyone knows of a PGA professional that would be interested in playing, please get in touch by calling Dave or Tom on 01299 271112.

More Course Improvements

It does seem like it's the same old record, but once again we have made more improvements to the course. This time we have CMGC member Mark Greenfield to thank who has kindly sponsored a complete new set of bells and banner posts for the course.

They are bright red so cannot be missed. Mark has just introduced a power coating facility at his business HQ in Dudley and was able to produce the bells and posts. With the greenkeepers hiring a mini digger to put them in as pictured, they will be there for a long time.

Mark is also on the case with new tee markers. Plus, he has not stopped yet with something extra planned, that cannot quite be revealed yet. As mentioned, a big thank you to Mark and his team at MG Shopfronts for their constant support of the club.

What is MG Shopfronts?

MG Shopfronts Ltd is an established manufacturer of quality shopfronts and roller shutters to the retail and shop fitting industries. The manufacture process is fully and truly "in-house". This adds vastly to the speed of the manufacturing process; thus we believe that from point of order to installation, MG Shopfronts are able to offer one of the quickest turn arounds in the industry.

Mark has also branched out into Qualsecure. Proudly manufactured in the UK, every door is unique and bespoke to your application. Quiet, automatic and aesthetically attractive, you can improve the value and appearance of your home. Insulated profiles provide additional warmth & security and are available in an extensive choice of colours and finishes, assuring the perfect match to your home.

If any of these services would be of interest, we highly recommend them, as they did Rob's garage in 2016. I have brochures available if anyone is interested or call them direct on 01384 231360.

Competition news

Westley's Wine Promise!

After a week of rain, there was a break on Saturday ready for the Roy Houghton Memorial Trophy at CMGC. Played over the toughest combination of Deer Park onto Foxes Run, we all knew a score in the 60's would be a great effort.

Steve Lau, Paul Jones, Matt Fairman, Gary Hingley and Dean Rogers all battled hard to take the trophy, but it was Mr Consistent who was the man to beat. John Westley who plays in every single competition, rain or shine, continued his fine form in 2017. He nearly let it slip with a quadruple bogey on the 15, but rallied on the last three to shoot a nett 66. John had this to say;

"My driving was the difference today, I didn't miss a fairway with the big stick and that set me up to hit more greens in regulation."

Dave Pain added;

"John has been very consistent this year and these results are fully deserved. I always see John out having a chip, putt and warm up in the net before he plays and I cannot recommend this enough. I would encourage everyone to follow John's lead, get to the club nice and early before your tee time and have a practice."

A special mention also goes to James Whitehouse, who had his first win by picking up division two. James held it together despite dropping 12 shots in the last 4 holes! Also, a shout out to Lee Glasby for his nearest the pin, he took home a lovely Under Armour top.

Pictured here is John, who has promised us on the presentation night he will be sipping wine out of the trophy!

Scratch Team Keep Up Impressive Form

The CMGC Scratch Team were back in action on Sunday 21st May with a home fixture against North Warwickshire. Played over Deer Park and Foxes Run, which has proved a successful combination so far this season, the team set out and after 9 holes the games were generally in Cleobury's favour, albeit most matches only had one or two holes in it.

Stu Humphries managed an impressive 5 birdies in 14 holes to win his match and put the first point on the board for Cleobury, quickly followed by Josh Rowbotham who was playing at number one for the first time, winning 3 and 2. Playing in his first Scratch match Adam Winnall made it 3-0 to Cleobury with a 4 and 2 win, keeping up the recent trend of players winning on their debut.

Charlie Edwards continued his good form, taking his personal record to 4 wins and just the 1 defeat this season to see Cleobury take a 4-0 advantage before halves from Tom & Andy Young, saw Cleobury over the line with the final result finishing as a 5-3 victory.

The team has seen a number of new players join in this season, which has resulted in some great performances and victories. With 5 games remaining, we are hopeful of picking up some crucial points away from home in order to challenge for top spot. The team travel to Dudley on Sunday 28th May, before we have a few weeks off to play in The Captains' Weekend and other various club competitions.
