Yet More Work & Planning Taking Place…

The weather is certainly a little mixed at the moment, as I write this, (Monday) we have had a great day with the course looking superb. As we have reported in recent weeks, Bob Price and Son have been busy at the club. This week they finished off the paths which look fantastic. They have settled brilliantly and although we don't want to think of winter golf just yet, these will certainly improve the course over those months.

You may also have noticed the huge tractor and trailer going up and down the course. This contained a high-grade soil which we are using for tee extensions. Again, this is to spread the play of wear and tear. The 6th of Badgers Sett in particular has seen a big change. More work is continuing over this next week and we will of course keep you all posted.

For the members, this week it is a trophy competition for the Roy Houghton Memorial, it's busy so get your entries in quick, entry is £5pp including a nearest the pin. A lot of players are coming in to form and it was great last weekend to see Nick Firth win the Medal, this was Nick's first win after several near misses over the last two years and see's him take control of the aggregate trophy with a two stoke advantage over Greg Shorter with Matt Fairman and Ashley Cook also not too far behind.

As well as the Roy Houghton Memorial Trophy up for grabs this weekend, FootJoy also have a great offer for anyone feeling confident in the Medal. Simply buy a SciFlex (£20), WeatherSof (£10) or RainGrip (£12) glove and if you beat your handicap you get another completely FREE.

For anyone coming to stay in the lodges this year, the bar has really been raised! A big shout to out Gavin Withey and friends; who stayed with us last weekend and had a fun with the pub buggy. We look forward to seeing what you have planned for next year.

Dave's Lesson Availability

The golf lessons have once again gone crazy! Below is my availability over the next two weeks. It was also great to see three out of the top 4 in the competition being clients of mine.

Ash Cook who had been struggling, had a quick 45 minutes with me on his putting and chipping and is already seeing results.

Ash Before The Lesson...
"Going to have to book some more lessons I think Dave, this is getting embarrassing. I three putted severn greens yesterday and another couple of holes were messed up by little chips. My long game has never been better, yet my short game is costing me massively. Can we have a couple of recap lessons and see if you can see something silly I am doing?"

Ash After The Lesson...
"Thanks for your help today Dave. Went and had a few holes and felt much more comfortable around the greens. Hoping for a nice steady round Sunday now."

Dave In Response...
"No worries Ash, I'll be keeping a close eye on your scorecard Sunday."

Ash After The Competition…
"Hi Dave, just wanted to say thanks for the lesson in the week. I was in a right slump and losing interest and couldn't see where I was going wrong. Played in the Medal today and shot 2 under par to get back to single figures, I felt confident around the greens again. Top job Dave, keep it up!"

Success story

Rosanna Is On A Roll!

CMGC seems to be the place to be for talented girl golfers, first it was Amy, then Emily Price and now we have the new kid on the block!

What a season Rosanna is having so far! I (Amy) have the pleasure of teaching Rosanna, and she continues to improve after each lesson and is constantly getting better and better. Her first event of the season was at Droitwich G.C in their Junior Girls Open where she shot a nett 66 to take 2nd place, just missing out on count back. Also due to having the best gross score for the Under 14s category, this meant she has been put forward for the Telegraph competition.

Following on from this, she has played in the Worcestershire County Championships at Kidderminster Golf Club on the 5th, 6th and 7th May. This event is a 36-hole competition on the Friday and the best 12 scores go through to the Saturday to compete in a matchplay event.

On the Friday in the Grace Boulton Salver, Rosanna got the 2nd best nett score with a nett 73, just losing on count back. However, she recorded the best nett over 36 holes for the Under 25s, winning the Jessica Smith Trophy. This meant that she progressed onto the matchplay on the weekend. She won her first match 3&2 that qualified her for the next round, which was the quarter finals.

She then played against a two handicapper and took her all the way to the 22nd hole! Unfortunately, Rosanna lost on the 22nd hole! Rosanna played some fabulous golf and gained lots of experience.

Finally, Rosanna played in the 4 Counties school event at Arscott GC on Friday, once again playing some great golf. She shot a gross 80 and nett 71, winning her the best nett for all girls competing.

After some amazing results, the Committee have awarded Rosanna 'Player of the Month'!

Please see Amy and Rosanna pictured here with the 'Player of the Month' Trophy and the Jessica Smith Trophy! Huge congratulations!

Mixed Golf Going From Strength to Strength at CMGC

Mixed Friendly Match Report

Cleobury Mortimer's mixed section season got underway on Sunday 14th May when we hosted the mixed team from Sapey Golf Club. Both clubs fielded a very impressive nine pairings each, to make for a very busy and enjoyable day.

The day started with a welcoming tea or coffee for the teams and soon the conservatory was buzzing with chat, as both teams got to know each other. First team out were organisers Jamie & Deborah Fearnley against their opposite number from Sapey, Di & Gerry Urquhart. A great match it was too, with Deborah playing some stunning golf. Credit has to go to both Di and Gerry for the way they battled to the very end, only loosing finally on the seventeenth.

As each team finished and gathered, first on the patio in the late afternoon sunshine and then in the conservatory, the sounds of conversation and laughter were soon filling the air again. It has been mentioned in the past that the success of a social gathering can be judged by the noise levels. If that is the case then we hit the jackpot on Sunday as these levels of conversations and laughter were very impressive.

Similarly impressive was the score line, with Team Cleobury posting a remarkable winning score of 7. The day concluded with an excellent two course meal prepared by the great band in the Cleobury Kitchen. As can be seen from the picture, the dining area was buzzing and everyone enjoyed the roast beef dinner and bakewell tart desert.

Any couple wishing to get involved in future matches, please study the mixed section noticeboard between the ladies' and gents' locker rooms. There are currently two sign-up sheets for the next events in June. Sign-up, join in and have a great day.

Seniors on Fire

The winning form of the Cleobury Mortimer Seniors' Team continues with a third win in a row. On Thursday 11th May CMGC resoundingly beat a strong team from Kington by 5 matches to 1 at home. This follows our earlier draw at Kington in March. The section continues to gather strength, with several new members having joined the section over the past few weeks.

Congratulations to Trevor and his team.

Have a great week, the CMGC team.
