Welcome once again to the CMGC newsletter,
We hope you have all had a great week both on and off the golf course. The weather certainly turned a lot colder on Monday and Tuesday, luckily we didn't get any snow! The Seniors' held their first open of the year on Tuesday, 25 April with the AM AM fully subscribed from 8am - 3pm. Well done to Mike Foord and the Senior section for a successful day.
As reported last week we have had a significant amount of people join the club since January and this week I would like to welcome another six new members to CMGC. Andy, Dean, Beryl, Ben, Brett and Derek have all recently joined and we hope they all enjoy everything CMGC has to offer.
This weekend we have a Men's Stableford on Saturday and Sunday, please call us on 01299 271 112 to book a tee time. On Sunday the Handicap League Team make the short trip over to Little Lakes for their second game of the season, whilst the Scratch Team host Ombersley. Good luck to everyone playing.
Course Work
In our quest for continuous improvement to the playing conditions and enjoyment of golf at CMGC we have had our good friends Bob Price and Sons on site to help construct some new paths and extend some tees. At the top end of Foxes by the 4th green the path has been extended and follows round to the winter tee on the 5th. Paths have also been added to the right of the 5th on Foxes, which follows round to the 6th tee, with the forward tee now doubled in length, and continues on the 7th on Foxes, which runs along the tee on the top and takes you all the way to the ditch.
This top tee has also been extended which will spread the play throughout the season. On Badgers Sett a new path will be made from the back of the 2nd green across to the Medal tee of the 3rd hole The paths will all be rolled and levelled before being topped off with a fine gravel surface.
As well as the extended tees on the 6th and 7th of Foxes we have enlarged the 7th Tee on Deer Park giving us even more options to spread wear from season to season. The recent spell of dry weather has enabled us to do these jobs quickly and efficiently, whilst the greenkeeping team have kept the course in what we believe is the best condition it has ever been for this time of year.
Looks like 2017 could be a vintage year for CMGC!
April Stableford
On Saturday, 22 April the Men's April Stableford took place with the weather once again holding up nicely. Jem Jones had a game of two halves with 13 points on his front nine and 24 on his back nine, including an eagle 2 on the 8th on Badgers Sett.
Matt Fidoe reduced his handicap to 16 after an impressive 38 points, whilst in form Jack Severn continued his quest to become a scratch golfer with a four under par 41 points, to cut his handicap to 0.9. The day however belonged to Gary Hingley. Gary has always been steady tee to green and managed to warm up his putter and shoot a fantastic 42 points.
Gary has just finished his lucky 7 package with Dave and was kind enough to send this email only two weeks ago. Just goes to show if you can commit to the lessons and practice the results will come, well done Gary.
"Thanks Dave,
I have really enjoyed the lessons and feel it has improved my game not that it has shown in my scores yet but that's just the game of golf. I will be booking more in the coming months. Thanks for all you help
Regards, Gary."
Mixed Brunch
One of the highlights of the mixed golfing calendar at Cleobury Mortimer is the Eden Shield, traditionally played around Easter each year. So on the beautiful spring morning of April 23rd, thirty-eight players in nineteen teams teed-off in this year's competition. The event has each group play their front nine, return to the clubhouse for a freshly cooked brunch and then complete their back nine.
Being an Easter competition, brunch was supplemented this year by a "nest" of chocolate eggs to each group as a thank you for their support.
Although the first tee time was set at 10:06am, these mixed events are so friendly, with great camaraderie amongst the Cleobury members, that the clubhouse was buzzing with a large number of players long before this time to enjoy a drink and a chat before going out.
Later, the clubhouse again filled as each group finished and was almost at bursting point by the time all groups had finished. Even though it may have been a long day for many, what was so special to me was that everyone stayed on after their round for the presentations.
Whether it was down to the beautiful weather or the relaxed friendly atmosphere the matches were played in, some great scores were posted by all teams with the final results being;
- Ladies Nearest The Pin -Sue Griffiths - Gents Nearest The Pin - Mike Watson - Second - Lyn & Dave Jinks - 43 points - Winners - Sharon & Paul Liggins - 44 points
Seniors Matches
The Seniors team, led by Captain Trevor Warman, have been producing some stunning golf over recent weeks, with an impressive 4-2 away victory at Bewdley Pines followed up by another 4-2 win, this time at home against Ludlow. The Seniors next match is a home fixture against Kington on Thursday, 11 May, best of luck to Trevor and his team.
Pool Table
The match room had a new addition this week when we took delivery of a new pool table. So if you finished tied with your playing partners after 18 holes, then you can always settle it on the pool table! Matt fancies himself as a bit of a pool expert, so if anyone wants to take him on please let us know.
