Pros news

Hello and welcome once again to the latest news from the one and only CMGC. I am not going to say it too loud, but I think we can say a big hello to the golf season. Every year it's like the flick of a switch and the car park is full with golfers enjoying the sunshine. It is crazy how quick the course dries out, we even managed to have buggies back out on the weekend.

Check out these pictures showing fairways, tees, surrounds all cut…. Next on the agenda… if the sun continues is the rough! Watch this space.

Members don't forget it is the Captains' Drive In on Sunday, the draw will be done Thursday afternoon, to get booked in call us on 01299 271112.

New Treatment For Tees and Approaches

As many of you will be aware Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club is often at the forefront of new thinking and a modern sustainable approach to golf club management both on and off the course. As part of this approach we have recently been working with a local agronomist on how we could make use of a by product of a local anaerobic digester that is capable of generating over 50% of the electricity used in Cleobury Mortimer.

The farm based energy plant uses Maize, Rye, manure and other organic material that is heated up and treated with enzymes to produce methane that runs a generator. The left-over material is compost like product that is inert, weed free and odourless with the right balance of nutrients to encourage slow even growth of the grass on areas such as tees and approaches whilst improving the soil structure.

This is especially important in the early spring when the course has been open to play all winter. You will see this on many areas of the course over the next few weeks and as the weather warms up and the grass starts to grow it will soon work into the surface and disappear.

Amy's Second Year PGA Residential

It was that time of year again last week when I headed to The Belfry for a week of learning! It is our only opportunity to have a one to one experience with our lectures and ask any questions that need to be asked.

Each day of the week covers a different module that I am studying this year.

Monday is a general day with lots of interesting topics covered with the main area being Rules of Golf (currently experiencing some massive rule changes) as well as nutrition, sadly I don't have an athletes diet just yet!

Tuesday we covered sports science and psychology, which was extremely interesting as we also looked at different types of learning methods.

Wednesday was Golf Coaching, which I always find incredibly exciting, learning new ideas and aspects of the game. We generally looked at In-swing principles and Video Analysis, while putting all this into practise and giving a lesson to someone.

Thursday was all about club building which we had an exam on while I was there. We had to build a club from components, then swing weight the club we had made and then adjust the loft and lies. This doesn't sound too bad, however when under a time limit, time definitely goes too quick! Nevertheless, I did finish with a couple of minutes to go! Just waiting for my results, so fingers crossed!

Our last day was all focused on business finance, this is very interesting but not what you want for 8 hours on a Friday! However, I did learn a lot about forecasting and profit & loss; all things that will help me with my exams!

Overall it was a great week with so many things learned and refreshed. It was great to meet more like minded people who are all in a similar position to me! I have loads to take on board and put into practise and I can't wait for the season to officially begin!

Past Captains United

After a gap of two years, the Past Captains of the Seniors Section held their Spring Sunday Lunch Reunion in the Wyre Suite at CMGC on Sunday, 12 March 2017.

Present were 11 Past Captains and the current Captain, Trevor Warman, and their Ladies. The sun shone, daffodils and blossom were all around, the room and tables looked gorgeous, and the views over the 9th Deer Park Green and beyond were a perfect background to relive old memories and absorb a few drinks in a great atmosphere.

A tremendous 3 course meal, followed by coffee and chocolates, was enjoyed by all present with many plaudits given to George, the kitchen staff and waitresses for the food and service.

The intention is to hold the reunion henceforth annually on the second Sunday in March every year.

Dennis Nock reported that since the section was first formed on 1st July 1994 there have been 21 captains with only two, Bob Stock, initially, immediately followed by Mike Slade, who had completed two consecutive years as captain.Mike was present, but sadly 4 past captains had died including Bob Stock and most recently, cheeky chappie, Pete Munslow.

All past captains had played their part in chairing the Seniors committee successfully in their year and helping the section to continually maintain a respected, profitable, and effective section status within CMGC. Current captain Trevor and his committee were continuing with some modern and novel effective new ideas.

Dennis then proposed the toast to absent friends to include those deceased and the 5 other past captains who were unable to attend due to illness or holiday. This was well received.

Dennis also proposed a toast to their long suffering Ladies present, who had put up with, for many years, the time the past captains had spent on the golf course, and with grateful thanks for their support and understanding. This was also well received.
