Hello everyone and welcome to the latest goings on here at CMGC, with January out of the way we have just got to get through February and then we are on the home straight to the season starting. We are continuing to spread the play across all three courses to make sure they all get their fair share of wear. Everywhere is still nice and green. We are on full greens, tees (apart from par 3's) which makes it ideal for some winter golf… Keep the swing going.

Thank You

To everyone that voted for us in the Midlands Golfer online poll, the results were published just over a week ago and we are delighted with our finish. It really is so humbling that so many of you appreciate all the work the staff do to make it what it is. Our marketing planner for the next 8 months has been confirmed with some exciting membership growth incentives. Our target is 50 new competition members in 2017.

Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club - Voted best in Shropshire

Yes, that's right Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club can lay claim to being best in class in all categories for Midlands Golfer's latest online opinion poll - making us truly Shropshire's number one golf course.

If you are looking for a golf course to join, or a venue to hold your next society/corporate day, then look no further. Why not come and play at Shropshire's most picturesque golf course which boasts the 3rd best hole in the Midlands - 6th of Badgers Sett - Measuring 150 yards with a 100ft drop from the tee to a green surrounded by a horse shoe lake, be sure to take a club less and find the heart of the green.

With this being just one of 27 challenging yet pleasurable holes to play, you will be sure to always have an enjoyable day.

For under £30 you can enjoy the three 9-hole courses: Badger Sett, Deer Park & Foxes Run, all set in 200 acres of magnificent surroundings and if you get lucky you may see this wildlife on the course. The course was voted the 7th best in the Midlands and number One in Shropshire. We know it's not all about the golf - start your day with one of our famous bacon sandwiches, voted 2nd best in the Midlands and the best in Shropshire.

For under £5 you can taste one of these delights complete with a freshly ground coffee. And of course, after the challenges of the day, come and relax in Shropshire's number One 19th hole where you'll be greeted by friendly staff serving local ales and produce. Cleobury Mortimer Golfshake Review

Early in January I had a phone call from Golfshake who are the biggest online round tracking website in the UK with nearly 100,000 members. They expressed the option of doing a review on the facility as a whole. With the Midlands Golfer magazine results looming it would be great to get an independent review of the facility. Mel who is an official ambassador for Golfshake came along and we played nine holes, had some lunch and then had a go on the simulator.

The first half of the review can be found below.

Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club is located on the Worcestershire/Shropshire border and is a proprietary Parkland course founded by Rob and Graham Pain (brothers) that offers 27 full holes, (3 loops of 9 holes) all starting and finishing at the Clubhouse. The first 9 (Deer Park) was opened in 1993 and designed by Ray Baldwin. The 2nd 9 (Badgers Sett) was opened in 1996 and final 9 (Foxes Run) opened in 1999. The 3 loops provide various options for visiting golfers all of which are of an excellent standard and this also makes Cleobury Mortimer a fantastic venue for golf societies.

During my visit (Jan 2017) I played the Badgers Sett which is a Par 36 measuring 3271-White, 3093-Yellow and 2845-Red. The signature hole is the par 3 6th which measures 150 yards off the whites and is one of the most picturesque holes in the region and one that everyone wants to play.

Upon arrival I was greeted by Dave Pain (Rob's son) Director of Golf and Golf Pro in the well stocked pro shop and his brother Tom. We had a quick coffee and chat before venturing out onto the course. The course looked in great condition and I was really looking forward to blowing off some post Christmas cobwebs.

Dubai Golf Trip 2018

I have just got back from 10 days in Dubai and Abu Dhabi visiting Sam and watching the golf and what a great few days it was. Entry for the 4 days was just £33 all in, it was so quiet you could get right up close and watch the worlds best in action. It started on Wednesday with the VIP Pro-Am, Sam was caddying in Ross Fisher's group which meant I got my invite and was able to walk the course with them. The course was up there with the best I have ever seen. Immaculate definition and quick greens. I left Sam and made my way to watch Rickie and Dustin's group, again it was that quiet the last two holes of Rickie's group it was just me watching so Claude Harmon invited me to walk up the last hole with them which again was great fun. The tournament days were a lot of fun with various activities going on e.g. Tim Henman tennis coaching, DJ's playing. Gary Rawlings who used to be a member of Cleobury hooked me up with clubhouse passes and we partied late on into the night on the Sunday in the clubhouse with various players.

The weather was 28 degrees in the day so nice and warm, to get out of the English winter, I will be planning a return trip for 2018 to co-inside watching the golf and also playing out there. Look out for details later in the year limited to just 7 places.

Competition news

Texas Results

Two big variables of the weekend could not stop the competition from going ahead. If the early morning rain did not put you off the biggest FA cup upset of all time surely would have…. Up The Wolves.

That said the competition went ahead with 10 teams playing. Some great golf was produced with some exceptional scores. Texas Scramble specialists: Ash Cook, Ad Cook, Matt Fairman and Lewis Hodges were up to their usual tricks with a nett 57 which gave them second place.

The day was won by a stunning score of 54.2 by Dave Booton, John Gittins, Mark Mansell, and Greg Shorter. The team all admitted that they contributed well and used some of John's long drives to gain the edge. Well played all.
