Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club Director of Golf
Good day to all and welcome once again to the latest goings on here at the mighty CMGC. It has been a fantastic week and it is not very often you get told a third into October that the greens are too quick (the eight of Foxes has caught a few out this week). Although it is getting colder in the mornings the weather looks set to hold.. make the most of it whilst you can.
You might even see one of us out practicing.. what hole do you think we were on?

How is Membership?
This is a question we get asked ALL the time, over the last 18 months the club has gone from strength to strength. Some great club captains in all sections have been great in growing the club and integrating new members. Our current count of members in all sections is 493.
If you would like to join and see what all the fuss is about and take us over the 500 mark prices and further information can be found by clicking here.
AJ Singles Specialist
A big congratulations goes to Andy Johnson who has just been crowd the 2016 singles knockout champion. Andy has been pretty much unbeatable this year in all forms of match play with a very strong record in the handicap team.
In the final Andy took on Karl Tyers and raced into an early lead taking two of the first three holes. Once he gets a lead he is a hard man to break down and he eventually went out a 3 and 2 winner.
Andy had this to say 'it was a great match, the difference was my putting. I held a couple of really long and important putts when I needed too'.
Jack Gunning For Number 1
It has been another bumper week for Cleobury's Jack Severn, a personal best round and back to back competition wins. It all started on Saturday in the junior club championships, Jack playing with Abbie Johnson and Oli Walters shot a personal best gross 66 to equal the junior course record on Badgers Sett and Deer Park. That gross 66 meant Jack had a nett 63 which reduced him to a 2 handicap.
On Sunday in the roll up Jack carried on where he left off with a three under gross 68 to give him 41 points, this was enough to see him win the competition. His closest rival was Tom Roberts who finished second with 38 points.
The 41 points meant Jack is now down to a handicap of 1.6. Don't forget he is still only 15!
For those who do not know once you are down to a handicap of 5 every shot you play under you only get reduced by 0.1. This means to drop your handicap takes a lot of rounds under! At the start of April Jack was off a 4.9 handicap so to get to where he is now is a great achievement. With only a couple of qualifiers left will he shoot down to the one handicap?
As pictured Scott has it hanging there for him ready to take!
Ian Dennis Memorial
Saturday marked the second now annual Ian Dennis Memorial Golf Challenge held here at CMGC. For those who do not know Ian was a very popular member from Highley who was taken from us before he was fifty years old. The day was started by Alan Preece with the help of the Dennis family. On Saturday nearly 90 people turned out for him to play the Texas Scramble format. Over £1000 was raised to go to charity.
Pictured here is Alan's team on the bench that was purchase last year in his memory.

Time to re-spike
As the winter is fast approaching its imperative that you make sure your spikes on your golf shoes are in perfect condition to keep your grip!
Step 1: Grab your shoes and look at the spikes.
Step 2: Do they look like the shoe on the left... worn spikes limiting stability. Or do they look like the shoe on the right .... perfect they will keep you on your feet all day.
If they do look like the shoe on the left we have the perfect offer for you.
Any Set of spikes and a spike wrench for £7.50. Normally worth £13.
With this offer, whenever you need to change a worn spike you have the equipment available to do it at hand, without having to wait.
Allowing you to have perfect grip all year round!
The final step before winter starts. On Monday a light aeration will be taking play just to let the greens breath. It should not take long but weather permitting nine holes will be closed at various points Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

It's a great course in the mountains which we've played many times.
We had a lovely day there being paired up with a couple from Canada.
