Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club Director of Golf
Good day to all from everyone here in beautiful south Shropshire.
Another week flies by as we already enter mid September! Can someone please explain to us where this year has gone!? This week the course really has been in fantastic condition once again. The combination of warm sunshine and rain showers has kept everything green and consequently the grass growing like crazy. We have plenty to report this week so sit back relax and enjoy…. Oh and don't be late this Saturday for the bargains.
Pictured here is a position no of us would like to be in on the 5th of Deer Park.

Men's Captains Classic
Saturday 10th September saw the Men turn out for the annual better ball competition competing for the Captains Classic Trophy. A betterball competition can certainly change how you play your game, if your partner plays safe it gives you the freedom to be aggressive, if your partner finds trouble all of a sudden that pond catches your eye, that bunker looks a bit deeper and the hole seems a lot smaller.
As the rounds got going you start to think what a winning score could potentially be, would it be 45 points, would it be more or would it be less? A few 42 points started to roll in and the odd 43 before Andy Thomas and Graham Fletcher finally broke out of the pack with 44 points, an excellent score that would win on any other day. Unfortunately for them and the rest of the field, the pairing of Stuart Humphries and Tom Pain simply had one of those days, 7 birdies and a number of Nett birdies saw the pair swoop in on a fantastic 11 under and 47 points to win by 3.
Speaking after the round Tom had this to say, "Playing with Stu is always great fun, birdies were flying in from everywhere but it was a 25 foot putt from Stu on the 9th for par that kept our momentum going and from then on we couldn't really put a foot wrong. The clubhouse was busy when we got in which was great with everyone supporting the Captain Jon on another fantastic competition".
There were also prizes for any pair that beat the Captains Score, after a steady score of 21 points after 9, Jon and Dave dropped a couple of shots coming home but still finished under on 37 points. Prizes can be collected from the Golf Centre.

Ryder Cup Comes To CMGC
The Ryder Cup is fast approaching at the CMGC USA and European captains have been revealed.
Captaining the USA team this year will be Stu Humphries and Team Europe will be captained by Bob Lucas.
The event takes place on Sunday 2nd October 2016. The teams will meet at around 8.45am and the pairings will be announced at 9am ready for a 9.30am start. This event was originally 12 a side but due to demand we have now increased this. Please get your names down ASAP to avoid missing out. Team USA play in red and team Europe play in blue. It promises to be a lot of fun and of course a few beers and banter will be flowing in the bar after.
Who are you going to play for Stu or Bob….
Adam Cooks Up A Big Season
A big thank you to Adam Cook who was kind enough to send me a few words after the completion of his lesson package. At the start of the season Adam was off a handicap of 16, after some lessons, hard work and plenty of practice Adam is now off an 11 handicap broke into the scratch team and his next goal of single figures looming.
"After finishing my lucky 7 package of lessons I just wanted to say thank you for all your help and patience with what we have worked on. All parts of my game from tee to green have improved.
I will definatly be booking more lessons next year to try and get handicap down even more. With your help over the last 6 months I have come down from 15.8 to 10.8.
With polishing up on all the stuff we have worked on I would like to get down to single figures by next year and then come and see you again.
I would highly recommend you to anyone looking for lessons beginner or advanced.
Thanks again Dave ive really enjoyed everything we have done."
CMGC On Tour
3 of Worcestershire counties top Under 18 players we're invited into The Challenge Tour Pro Am at Haythrop Hall in August, including Cleobury youngster Jack Severn.
Here are the boys with Tour player Marco Crespi before they teed off.
With best 2 out of 4 counting they Shot an excellent 15 under, just failing to make the prizes, great experience for the lads to see what being on Tour is like.
Short Game Area
The short game area is really started to bed in now, the hitting areas are looking great and the green is nearly there.
Every member is welcome to use it and if you haven't had a walk over in awhile make sure you check it out.
Work on the other side of the short game area is due to start in the next couple of weeks with the addition of a bunker.

Tiger Woods has announced his return to competitive action, well, sort of. To celebrate his possible comeback, here’s a flashback to the baggy-trousered great.
Have a great golfing week and we hope to see you at CMGC very soon.
