Greetings golfers,

What a fantastic week or so it has been. There is so much positive energy around with the Olympics with medal after medal rolling in on all different sports. It was of course great to see GB's very own Justin Rose take home the Gold Medal in the golf. It was brilliant to see how much it appeared to mean to him and hopefully any non golfers who watched the thrilling climax to the competition will hopefully be inspired to take up the game. With a bit of luck, both Charley Hull and Catriona Matthews can also have a great Olympics and pick up a medal in the Women's event. Back at Rio de Cleobury we have once again had plenty going on so let's dive right in.

Greenkeepers news

This past week the Green Keeping Team with the help of local contractor Bob Price and Son have been busy using the Blec Ground Breaker on the fairways. The Ground Breaker relieves surface compaction by inserting continuous 6-inch slits down the fairways, shattering the soil below the surface which helps assist the movement of water and air throughout the surface soil. The soil is fractured laterally by the side forces created by the sequential positioning of the blades. Mounted in between the blades are wide flat skids, which hold the turf down preventing any heave occurring.

Scarifying the fairways then follows, which removes any thatch before all the loose grass is collected. Each fairway takes between 3 and 4 hours. By the time this newsletter hits your inbox Deer Park and Foxes Run will have been completed and we hope to complete Badgers Sett by the end of play on Monday. Thank you to everyone who has played this week for your co-operation as we have had to close 9 holes at a time to carry out this work out.

Presidents Day

What a fantastic weekend as another Cleobury Major is played out in glorious sunshine with some new names to go on the trophies.

Presidents Day allows players to have the opportunity to play all 3 nines in one day to win the 27 hole trophy, their is also a 18 hole trophy over Badgers/Deer and a 9 hole trophy over Deer Park. The turnout was great to celebrate our President, Tom Straughton's Day with over 70 players taking part.

I don't know what it is with the word MEDAL but it seems to do odd things, with the occasional card wrecker coming in to upset what would have been a great card for many players.

A steady array of scores drifted in throughout the day, however it wasn't until the last few groups started to come in that we would see some dramatic changes on the leaderboard. Jim Clifford carded a pleasing nett 33 on Deer Park to take home the 9 hole trophy, whilst Lewis Hodges carded a gross 85, Nett 66 to take home the 18 hole trophy, but the day however belonged to John Swithenby. After the first 9 holes, John was sitting at 8 over par with a lot of work to be done. Maybe it was the bacon sandwich after the first 9 holes, maybe it was the start of the premier league season that got John in the zone, whatever it was John played flawless golf to shoot a 1 over par gross 72, Nett 62 to take the 27 Hole trophy and also see his handicap chopped 2 shots. In the Ladies competition Helen Watson took top spot, just edging out Marj Hughes by 1 shot with both players matching each other shot for shot over the last five holes.

Final Standings:

27 hole Trophy: John Swithenby, 18 hole trophy: Lewis Hodges, 9 hole trophy: Jim Clifford.

Ladies winner: Helen Watson, Nearest the Pin 6th Badgers: John Gallagher, Nearest the Pin 5th Deer: Simon Eades.
