Hello once again to the latest news and goings on here at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club. As we wave goodbye to July we now enter a critical four weeks with just over a month to go until the Club Championships. As always the course has stood up great to the dry conditions with the fairways nice and lush and the greens rolling at a true pace.
For members this weekend we have a weekend roll up Stableford. The lodges are full but we still have a few tee times available on our famous golf and breakfast offer. Please phone us or reply to this email to book in.
Pictured here is the second of Foxes Run looking lovely.
Short Game Area Development
The extension of the short game area is now really taking shape. The whole process has been over a year in planning. The original green had two bunkers on the side, although a great asset to the club this was simply to small for overall playability and shot selection. Tom and I felt we could really transform the area and make it the best short game area in the West Midlands.
Working closely with the greenkeepers we filled in the two bunkers to make the green over three times bigger than the original. This was only done in May but has settled nicely and we are hopeful the surface will be ready for the winter months.
With the green now visually defined the next step has been to mark out some hitting areas. As mentioned previously we were looking to add in shots that you would get on the course at CMGC. The extension will allow: long chip and runs, lobs shots, shots to high levels, low levels and much more.
The side heading back towards the clubhouse and 9th of deer park green has been cut out as the pictures show offering up to 90 yard shots to sections of the green.
Phil Price will be on site in the coming weeks to assess the opposite side. Phil will build some elevated hitting areas and level the area out. As it stands it slopes down and with the elevated green from a golfers point of view it makes hitting shots difficult as you cannot see where the ball is pitching. With these in place it will make for a great area at all angles to work on the so called 'scoring zone'. We know as golfers that it is all well and good hitting great drives but knocking it close from 100 yards and in or getting up and down is where a round is won and lost.
A bunker has been earmarked and will be put in at some point in October when the cutting season is winding down. If you would like more information on the area or like Dave or Tom to show you around it, please get in touch.
USPGA Championship
Tom
Jason Day- Haven't had much luck with picking winners in this years majors so keeping it pretty safe with this pick. Obviously World Number One and Defending Champion isn't going to make you a fortune but at 10/1 a £10 flutter makes a healthy profit.
Each Way- Keep hearing a lot of good things about Tony Finau, solid performance at The Open Championship so should be pretty confident. At 125/1 he might be worth a small each way bet.
Dave
Henrik Stenson - Many pundits believe now he has won one major the flood gates will open at 15/1. I fancy him to win back to back majors.
Each way - Martin Kaymer 60/1 - With just 3 events left to get into the Ryder Cup team Kaymer needs to start performing. He will certainly be in the mix this week to get him straight into Darren Clarke's thought processes.
Sam
Rickie Fowler - A quiet year so far from his standards, but can easily turn his game around with the exciment of representing the USA in the Olympics he will be on a high and can carry this over into his golf game….. providing he can stay off snap chat of course! Rickie is 40/1.
Each way - Tyrell Hatton - 150/1 very much inform after his display at the open last week, a great price and worth a go for a top 6 finish.
Matt
Winner - Jordan Spieth 12/1 hasn't really fired in the majors this season and has hinted a revival of form in his last couple of tournament's.
Each way - Keegan Bradley 90/1 has been in terrible form over the past 18 months but showed he was coming back to form when briefly showing near the top of the leaderboard at the british open. He has won the PGA before so knows what it takes.
Amy
Phil Mickelson 22/1 - Shooting the score he did at The Open and missing out shows the kind of form he is in. I think he will continue this and get his first major of 2016.
Each way - Beef to make the cut evens - the media presence he has now is crazy for the cult golfer. The sponsor will be hoping he is there all week and at that price you can easily double your money.
The Cleobury Open 2016
The newly revamped Cleobury Open was a huge success with teams from all over the West Midlands taking part.
With a 50-50 split of mixed teams and male teams the pot was split with the top two teams from each section taking home prizes. Afternoon starters The Popes and Butchers shot a fantastic nett 58.6 to take first place in the mixed section.
The very strong team from Shifnal lead by plus 2 handicapper Craig Simmons made a mockery of the tough deer park course shooting 27 gross. They slowed up on the Badgers Sett course but finished with 56.4 to lead the way.
That was until the very last team out... Cleobury members Selwyn, Darren and friends Trevor and Justin also shot a 56.4 nett but a superior back count on Badgers Sett was enough to snatch victory.
Team captain Selwyn had this to say
'It was a team effort with everyone contributing. Myself and Darren have recently joined Cleobury and look forward to playing in more events'.
A big thank you to all for playing and supporting the event and also to Steph for the fantastic homemade cakes supplied after nine holes.
