Hello and welcome once again to the latest news and goings on here at CMGC. As I write this it is 30 degrees outside and the course is looking fantastic. A big thank you to everyone for continuing to book tee times it really does make such a difference to the logistics of the tee management. Let's hope this weather continues and if you're playing Saturday you might see us out playing!

Over the last few days the greenkeepers have been focusing on cutting grass. Constantly going over and over to really stamp in the definition. If you fancy a game this week please call us on 01299271112

I put the below picture on our various social media channels and believe it or not it is the third of Foxes Run.

This Sunday we have an open Texas Scramble - 15 teams are currently in it and we have plenty of morning tee times. If you would like a enter a team it is £12.50 for visitors and £7.50 for Cleobury members. PLUS it includes some of Steph's fantastic homemade cake after nine holes.

What an end to the 2016 Open Championship at Royal Troon, two of golfs heavy weights literally battling it out for the Claret jug. Although Phil is a favourite amongst us at Cleobury it was great to see Henrik get his first major in such style. As normal our sweep sold out and with the two players so far ahead of the chasing pack it was left for Tom Neath and John Poole to battle it out.

Tom who was the last person to enter the sweep picks up two FootJoy polo shirts and Titleist holdall.

With the Olympics and Ryder Cup fast approaching the final major of the year has been moved forward.

This means it is only a week away and therefore we have the final major sweep of the year up for grabs. It is total pot luck who you might get as shown by Tom!

1st Tom Neath - Henrik Stenson,
2nd John Poole - Phil Mickelson,
3rd Karl Tyers - J B Holmes,
4th Ian Dorrell - Steve Stricker

Dead last before the cut - Sandy Lyle - John Gallagher

The Euros also ended last weekend and Gary Hingley won with Portugal, Andy Johnson was second with France. Paul Jones, Lee Glasby and Jack Gosnall all picked up booby prizes for worst goal difference and red cards in the group stages!

Junior news

HSBC Hour!

On Sunday we hosted the FREE HSBC hour that runs alongside The Open to offer free golf to children and families.

It was a great success with Amy leading the children's session and Dave taking charge of the adults.

Everyone was getting involved and enjoying it, in the beautiful weather we had on Sunday. In the hour we covered some Putting and Chipping learning it through fun games and lots of different targets to aim for.

Overall it was a great success and hopefully we will see all the juniors continuing into the junior sessions we hold here.

Junior Amnesty

We need your help!

With more juniors getting involved in numerous activities here at CMGC we are struggling with the equipment to cover all the age ranges.

If you have any old juniors clubs hanging around the house.

Please drop them into the golf club, they will regularly get used and be really appreciated.

Mawley Milk Cup

This weekend's competition was not only a Medal and Summer Order of Merit event but the players were also competing for the Mawley Milk Trophy.

Ross Moorecroft who won the trophy the last two years couldn't play so a new winner would be crowned.

With a big field taking part, and the weather absolutely glorious, the conditions were almost perfect for some great scores to hit the leaderboard.

Starting bright and early, Tom Judge had a steady round with some great golf shooting 69 nett, allowing him to take top spot right from the very beginning. However Steady John Westley was to knock him of the podium equalling his 69 but beating Tom on Countback. One of the players making up the last group was Jack Severn who is in currently in great form. Jack took 3rd place shooting a 70 and also took the nearest the pin prize.

A big thank you to everyone that entered. The competitions are coming thick and fast this season lets keep the high entry numbers going.

Ladies Club Championships

The Ladies Club Championship, a 27 hole competition over all three 9 hole Courses was played on Wednesday 13th July. The weather was reasonably kind to the ladies with only a few brief showers. 15 Ladies took part and is always the case with Ladies Competitions the chat in the Conservatory afterwards indicated that it had been an enjoyable, if, on occasions a challenging day.

The winner of the Nett Prize with a nett score of 111 was Juliet Dugdale whose handicap was cut by one shot as a result. Wendy Duncan was Runner up on countback with nett 116. The winner of the Gross Prize with a gross score of 138 was Nina Foord, this year's Lady Captain. Julie Currie was Runner Up with gross 139.

Afterwards Nina commented that the recent rain had softened the course slightly and as a result the greens seemed more receptive. She also thanked Robert and his Green Staff for the condition of the course following what had been yet another challenging few days.

Seniors Club Championships

Due to be a two day event, we eventually had to reduce it to one day on Friday July 15th, due to horrendous weather conditions on day one.

The winner of the competition was Dave Brownhill with score of 87 nett 65, (accompanied by a 2 shot handicap reduction).

Graham Butcher
came second and won the Mike Edmundson trophy for best gross score.

Pictured from left is Dave Brownhill, Maurice Clarke (seniors captain) and Graham Butcher.

Stenson win

The 145th Open Championship saw Callaway’s Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson go head-to-head in a Sunday showdown that will go down as one of the greatest ever – it really was some display of ball striking. We’re used to seeing the Swede use that much-loved 3-wood of his, but we also saw him use his XR driver to devastating effect at Royal Troon.
