Greetings golfers,

Another busy week flies by at CMGC, by the time this hits your inbox hopefully you'll all be able to watch some of The Open up at Royal Troon. A lot of talk on the build up to the event has been about players pulling out of the Olympics and not much focus on the actual Open itself. Let's hope by the end of the week we are talking more about the great golf at Royal Troon and nothing else.

On Friday 8th July we held the Rainbow Cancer Care Foundation Golf Day which is ran by Jon and Ange Gaskell and friends, it was a great day as always and a few words from Jon and Ange can be found further in the newsletter.

This week we also held the Womens and Seniors Club Championships, reports on these will be in next week's newsletter. This weekend we have a couple of competitions plus the Handicap Team take on Bransford. Lot's to report so let's dive right in.

Tips from the team

The Open Predictions

Matt-

Winner- Rory McIlroy 10/1 - The last time Rory played in The Open he won it (remember his football injury last year) so I think he will be determined to get his hands back on the claret jug.

Top 40- Colin Montgomerie 5/1 - Monty rolled back the years and played some superb golf in order to qualify for The Open. Could be worth a bit of pocket money for a top 40 finish.

Tom-

Russell Knox- 80/1- Made his debut at The Open last year after McIlroy pulled out and has had quite a year since. A good finish at The Scottish Open last week and with 'home' advantage he could have a memorable few days.

Rafael Cabrera Bello- 8/1 - Top Ten - Trying to find some value for anyone who likes a bet, Rafa Cabrera Bello is hunting down a Ryder Cup Spot and a good week here would give him plenty of points towards achieving this. A good performance in the WGC Matchplay earlier in the year and a top 5 at the recent French Open shows he's ready to compete.

Amy-

Matthew Fitzpatrick- 70/1 - Fantastic young golfer who seems to be getting better all the time. Made the cut in both majors so far this year including a tied 7th place at The Masters.

Branden Grace- 25/1 - Came close in the US Open finishing in a tie for 5th, hits the ball low and makes plenty of birdies so could well be near the top once again.

Dave-

Dustin Johnson- 9/1 - Not much to say on this one, hits it over 300 yards off the tee, won the US Open and the recent WGC Event, he must be so confident right now so I'm going with him to win. Lee

Lee Westwood- 40/1 - Performed well in the first two majors so knows he can compete, backing Lee at each way as he has the game but does he believe he can win it.

Competition news

Mens Lloyds Cup and Seve Stableford

On Sunday 10th July, the Mens Lloyds Cup and Seve Stableford was contested with a host of good scores coming in throughout the day. The rain Saturday morning made for good scoring on Sunday with the greens softening up, rewarding the golfers who took on the pins. Club Captain Jon Gaskell, who after hosting the Rainbow Foundation Charity Golf Day on Friday was in inspired form to shoot 38 points and take 3rd spot on count-back. Arnold also shot 38 points to keep up his good form but he was to be out done by county star Jack Severn

Jack playing off 4 got to 2 under par through 7, dropped shots on 8 and 9 didn't deter the youngster who went round Deer Park in level par and level par overall for a commanding 40 points that wouldn't be matched. Jack edges closer to getting his handicap down to 3 and hopefully with more rounds like this it won't take him too long.

Dave, who has been working with Jack over the last few months, had this to say. "Jack is already ahead of schedule, he wanted to get down to 4 this season whereas I thought 3 was a more realistic target. He is playing a lot of county golf and opens at other courses, which is making him a stronger and more adaptable player. I have worked with Jack on his putting and scrambling since March with these stats really improving". Keep up the great work Jack.

Success story

More success for the Amy Millward and Sian Hawes Partnership

It's been a fantastic couple of weeks for some of my lesson clients and I am so happy for them with their handicap reductions and trophy wins!

A few weeks ago I mentioned Sian Hawes winning the Bunny Cup trophy and seeing her handicap cut to 35. Since then Sian finished 1st in The Prize Winners Cup shooting 40points seeing her handicap cut to 32! Sian also took second place in the Rainbow Cancer Care Foundation Charity Golf Day! This is fantastic for Sian who has really took on board what we have been working on in both the swing and course management. Huge Well done Sian!

Another of my lesson clients has also seen a handicap reduction and a trophy win! Congratulations Heather Pringle! In the Rainbow Cancer Care Foundation Golf Day Heather took top spot in the main ladies prize. After working hard with Heather on her game over the past few months we are really starting to see big improvements! Heather has also reduced her handicap from 25 to 23. This time last year Heather won the wooden spoon in the charity day and after a few lessons she has gone from the bottom of the field straight to the top! This is a fantastic result and shows how much a couple of lessons can improve your game!

Congratulations Heather!

I am very grateful for the support I am gaining. If you are struggling please book a lesson and I will help you get results!

Rainbow Cancer Care Foundation Golf Day

Once again, our annual charity golf day was a great success and the weather was beautiful after many weeks of rain.

The course was in great condition and it looked amazing all around with our hole sponsors, signs and banners.

All of our team were on form and the day went like clockwork. We had more players entered this year, with a few withdrawals at the last minute we ended with 129 on the day. Everyone had a good day, laughter rang out around the club house with the putting and chipping competition getting very competitive, great to see so many happy faces.

Our thanks go out to all at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club, green keepers, kitchen and bar staff and of course our Pro Shop team who excelled as usual. Thanks also to the many members of the club for their support and also the very kind donations on the day. Maz and Sue again for their raffle skills, your booked again for next year.

The first count of money raised is £8600 on the day, but we have many sponsors to come in, so watch this space, best year ever, we think.

Our golf day next year is 7th July 2017, so keep a note in your diary. Before that though, if you want to enjoy another fun evening join us for our Night Golf on Friday 28th October 2016

Thanks again Ange and Jon Gaskell.

Charity day

Teenage Cancer Trust

The Teenage Cancer Trust Charity Day at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club recently had a nice write up in the Evesham Journal, hopefully this day will raise plenty of money for a great cause like several other days we have had up at CMGC this year including the Adam Millichip Foundation Golf Day, The Rainbow Cancer Care Foundation Golf Day and the RSPCA Golf Day.

Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club has teamed up with Dudley-based Mark Greenfield of MG Shopfronts, for the annual Charity Golf Day on September 23rd to provide Teenage Cancer Trust with the opportunity to raise much needed funds.

The day will consist of coffee and bacon roll on arrival 18 holes of golf, lunch on course and an evening buffet meal, were the presentations will take place.

The day is supported by Benham BMW of Wolverhampton who are arranging the use of, either an I8 or 7 Series for a weekend as part of the day plus, a tuck shop halfway round.

Event organiser David Coleman said: "This is the first year that this event will have been held at Cleobury.

"I have previously held the event at Astbury but was delighted to secure Cleobury this time round, the day has become a must play event attracting teams from London and Switzerland as well as the Midlands."

A golf club spokesman said: "We are delighted to host this event in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust and, want to thank Mark Greenfield of MG Shopfronts for his generosity in becoming the main sponsor. Mark is a member and recommended us to the event organiser."

Lottie Kendall, from the Teenage Cancer Trust, said: "Seven young people aged 13-24, are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK.

"Teenage Cancer Trust are dedicated to supporting these young people by building specialist units and providing specialist staff.

At the moment for every young person we can reach, there is another we can't. We rely solely on donations and that is why events like this year's golf day are so important to us.

We are so grateful at Teenage Cancer Trust to have long standing, dedicated supporters like David Coleman. We would also like to thank this year's sponsor Mark Greenfield for his generosity. I'm sure the day will be a great success."
