Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club Director of Golf
Welcome to another newsletter full all of all things CMGC!
Thankfully it has now stopped raining (some of the rain showers were intense) and we can get back to enjoying golf in our shorts! As I write this England are safely out of the group stages. Our next game will take place on Monday (27th June) at 8pm. The drink promotions will be continuing but with a twist. The promise of an attack minded England hasn't quite gone to plan yet. However we can all keep the faith. Below you will see our Match promos.
Hobsons £2.50 a pint, Bottle of bud £2.50 and Oldfields cider £2.50 a pint.
If England score those drinks will all drop down to £2 until full time! We look forward to seeing you all here on Monday. No matter what we all vote for on Thursday… let's hope we stay in the Euros for at least a few more weeks!
The greenkeepers have been doing a great job clearing the greens and getting the course playable. They have also been out re-surfacing some of the bridges and keeping on top of the grass that is growing like crazy. This Saturday is our Anniversary Texas Scramble. On July 1st 1993 we opened our doors and to celebrate this we are holding a Texas scramble competition.
This event currently has 22 teams in it. It costs £15 for visitors and £7.50 for members. If you fancy a game we have the following times available.
8.32, 9.00, 12.16, 12.32, 12.40, 12.48.
If you are looking for a game:
- 7.50am need 1 player
- 8.00am need 1 player
- 9.16am need 2 players
We have loads of prizes up for grabs. ALL entry money will be going into the prize pot. This is a big one to win! Call us on 01299 271112 or email us here to sign up.
As this picture shows this course is looking exceptional. Have you booked your tee time this weekend? Call us on 01299 271112 to book.

A big thank you once again to everyone that has supported me with golf lessons at CMGC.
I try to mention stand out performances on a weekly basis and this week it has to go to Pete Hammond.
Pete approached me as a complete beginner having never picked up a club before and was keen to get into golf after a successful spell as a rower.
Pete took on the Lucky 7 package and has just completed it and has already signed up for another 7 lessons and joined the club.
Pictured here are the posture changes we have been working on.
Pete was also kind enough to send me a few words on completion of his 7 lessons.
"As a total beginner to the world of golf two months ago, Dave has taken me never holding a club to having the confidence to enter my first comp (and I didn't come last). CMGC and its stylish, social media obsessed director of golf are friendly, welcoming and fun. If you have ever considered taking up the noble sport then look no further, and at £99 for 7 hours of lessons a bargain too! ".
Emily Price is off to Oslo
Congratulations to Emily Price who has being selected to represent England in the European Girls' Team Championship at Oslo Golf Club, Norway in July. Emily has being selected along with: Louisa Brunt, Sharna Dutrieux, Lily May Humphreys, Isobel Wardle and Amelia Williamson. All six are new caps at this level.
Good luck to Emily and the rest of the England team, for more information about the players please click here.
Another Cleobury Major passes by and with new Champions! What a weekend, well supported, loads of fun, some great golf being played and the added advantage of Ange Gaskell's cakes to enjoy!
As always Friday commences with the Seniors Competition, Junior Competition and Par 3 course and putting competition! It was a good day for Paul Tierney who shot 36 points in the seniors competition to win as well as picking up a nearest the pin prize. The evening followed with the junior competition which was over 9 holes over Badgers Sett. This was won by Arnold Edmonds with 21 points. As always a tricky putting competition was won by Mike Wood with 16 putts on countback for the men and Chris Perry with 16 putts for the ladies. Friday night of Captains weekend is never complete without the par 3 course, and for one individual George's caravan came into play! Sorry Graham, little bit further to the left next time haha! Helen Watson won it for the Ladies with 23 shots while Jack Severn won it for the men shooting level par with 18 shots.
Jack Severn also hit the longest drive with the niblick, with Sara Pain hitting it the furthest for the ladies.
Saturday started with the Main competition, The Captains Cup trophy for the men and The Straughton Salver for Ladies, A Cleobury Major, so who's name would be engraved this year. It was great to see so many ladies taking part, and enjoying the weekend competition. In third place was Heather Pringle with 31 points, Second place was taken by Sara Pain who also had 31 points but beat Heather on countback, and first place went to Sylvia Tudor Hughes with 32 points. It's great to see Sylvia getting her name on trophy after having a quiet winter. Here's to a good summer season.
The mens competition as always was hotly contested, many of the form players had been tipped by the golf shop staff throughout the week but when the word Medal is mentioned it can heap some extra added pressure. Colm Berry who has been shooting some great scores recently continued this with a 68 nett. Jem Jones last year's Captains Cup winner was in the running but winning back to back wasn't to be! Jem would take 3rd place.
The day belonged to Arnold Edmonds who after playing well on Friday night and winning the junior competition, looked in good stead for the weekend. Playing alongside the Captain John, Arnold took top spot with a Nett 66.
1st - Arnuld Edmonds - 66 Nett
2nd - Colm Berry - 68 Nett
3rd - Jem Jones - 69 Nett (countback)
Captains Weekend is never complete without the Captains V Presidents match early on Sunday morning. Making it even better was our President Tom playing with his Daughter Sara on Father's Day! As always Betterball Matchplay was the format with Prizes going to the Biggest Matchplay result and the Best pairs Betterball Stableford score. Garry Hawes and John Haywood stormed the biggest win beating their opponents 6 &5 while the best Betterball stableford score was 40 points which was won by Graham Butcher and Dave Timmis. The biggest result though is which team won? Team Captain? Or Team President? And of course it was a draw!
