Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club Director of Golf
Hello and welcome once again to the latest instalment of all things CMGC!
Somehow we are now halfway through June and well into the golfing season. The last few months have been a lot of fun here at the club. We have seen the following: better golf, competition accomplishment and extreme success in the kitchen with Steph taking things to a whole new level. Over the next few weeks we plan to document and show the great food that is served here at CMGC be it: breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Although England didn't quite hold out for the win on Saturday night against Russia, it makes it all the more interesting on Thursday when we take on our Welsh neighbours. We will once again show the match in the bar with numerous drink promotions on offer. Sadly Roy didn't play Jamie Vardy against Russia. However we have some exceptional offers to get stuck into in England's next two games. If Vardy or Kane score we will be selling Hobsons at £2 a pint or if that doesn't take you fancy how about four bottles of Bud for £8?
We have now conducted our Euro 2016 draw, if you entered you can find your team by clicking here.
As the picture below shows the course is looking very green! Although we missed most of the storms that came down over the weekend we did get a bit. Hopefully it won't stick around for long and the course can get back to being quick and fiery again. This week you will be receiving your sub renewals. Remember Fairway Credit is now a hugely popular way of financing golf membership here at CMGC. If you have any questions at all please contact Dave and he will be more than happy to help.
The first Cleobury Major of the year takes place this weekend on Saturday the 'Captain's Cup Medal' this event is filling up fast so please get your name down ASAP. It is played in three balls and promises to be a great occasion.
On the Sunday we have an 8.30am shotgun start for the Captains V Presidents. Remember it's Father's Day so that is a great excuse to get two games of golf in this weekend! A FREE buffet will be provided by the Captain and is available for all players on Sunday. Feel free to bring as many family members as you like, the more the merrier. Not forgetting the fun filled Friday night! This Friday Deer Park will turn into a par 3 course with various competitions taking place. The event kicks off from 5pm onwards.
US Open Predictions
After Matt picked out Danny Willet for the Masters it is time for the CMGC golf centre staff to do their bit again and win you all some money on the US Open. Here are our predictions, best of luck to all.
Jordan Speith - 10/1 to win - Last year's US Open Champion, and looking to redeem himself after his fall at the Masters, this could be the win he needs to get his season started.
Mathew Fitzpatrick - 66/1 Each Way - After a great win at the Nordea Masters, he's in great form and looking to take a major, so this could be a great week, taking back to back wins after a week off.
Justin Rose - 28/1 to win - Prepped Ready to win and having won it in the past is a great shout and price.
Louis Oosthuizen 75/1 each way - Has natural South African grit and determination which is needed on the long and tough course. He will be in the mix.
Dustin Johnson - 15/1 to win - Never really been a fan of DJ but I think it is now his time to step and win a major, the course is playing into his hands with it so long. He will be the man to beat.
Bubba Watson - 45/1 each way- A fellow lefty Bubba has so far had a quiet year, this is a huge price for a 2 time major winner. Bubba's shot shaping skills will come into their own.
Brooks Koepka - 45/1 to win - The powerful American is in good form including a second place finish last week. Surely a Ryder Cup debut beckons later on in the year and this could be where he cements his place.
Brandt Snedeker - 55/1 to win - A great putter which will be key when your patients is being tested on a US Open course. A top 10 finish last year and I would expect something similar again this year.
Beef Top 20 - 10/1 - Andrew Johnston won this year round a tough Valderama course, so knows how to grind out a score and knows pars can get the job done. This is his first pro appearance in America. But he has built up a small following there due to: honest interviews, celebrations and of course the beard! So should feel comfortable.
Phil Mickelson - 28/1 - Still looking for that career grand slam. Performed well last week which will only boost his confidence. I think this could be the year he finally gets over the line.
AD333 Tour CRAZY Deal
Our friends at Srixon have come up with what can only be described as a crazy deal on the AD333 Tour golf ball. Buy a dozen for £28 and we will give you another two sleeves completely FREE making it just £4.66 a sleeve.
If you are an AD333 user and want something a little softer for the summer this ball would certainly suit you. This is the best deal you will get on balls this year, we have just nine dozen left so please be quick.
Come and give it a try, if you don't like them after a round return them for a full refund.
Roll Up Results
The mens weekend roll up was once again fantastically contested with over 50 playing. As normal the best three scores over the weekend would be in the prizes.
Martin Bower who has recently re-joined the club after two years of wedding preparations shot 37 points which was enough to see him take third place on countback from David Annetts.
Colm Berry who has been playing well for a few weeks now finally held his score together for 18 holes on his way to 41 points which was enough to give him 2nd place.
The day however belonged to Paul Judge who despite not making it past the ladies tees on the first of badgers he recorded a huge 43 points.
Paul was first out just after 7am and certainly got the best of the conditions missing the wind and rain showers that appeared throughout the rest of the weekend.
This display has meant that Paul is now cut to a 17 handicap going from 24 to 17 in just under four months.
Director of golf Dave Pain had this to say 'Paul is a lesson client of mine and we have had 4 lessons together. he hits the ball great and has a great course management mind, do not rule him out for this weekends Captains Cup Medal, this certainly won't be the last win of the year from him'.
1st - Paul Judge - 43
2nd Colm Berry - 41 points
3rd - Martin Bower - 37 (CB)

RSPCA Day Success
The RSPCA Charity Day on Friday was a huge success for all involved. 16 teams entered which was up on last years event. The weather was great and the course was set up to perfection. Using home advantage: Rich Smith, Tommo, Chris Hawks and John Gallagher won the day.
I received a lovely note from Beverley Taylor thanking the club:
Thank you to all the team at Cleobury golf club for your help and support in making the RSPCA charity golf day such a success. We managed to raise 50% more than last year. This will encourage the other trustees to continue the golf day at Cleobury in the future.
Please pass on our thanks to everyone involved. If you are part of a company looking to entertain clients or looking to host a charity day please keep us in mind and we will be happy to make it a success."
Lesson Success for Amy
It's a great moment when I (Amy) see my lesson clients progressing and reaching their goals! It's fantastic to see people happy with their game and making constant improvements. I've been working hard with a couple of my juniors lately, and both have had some great results in terms of handicap reductions and winning competitions.
I've been working with Ollie Walters now on a one-to-one basis for around 6 months now, and we have managed to get him a regular place in the junior team as well going from a junior handicap of 45 to a Mens handicap of 28. This is fantastic for Ollie, as his goal was to get an official handicap. We have worked hard on his short game as well as now continuing to work closely on his long game making improvements to set up and swing.
Another Lesson client I'm super happy for is Abbie Johnson, who won her first competition at Gaudet Luce in their 9 hole Junior Open competition. Abbie and I have worked extremely hard on her swing and now we're recapping on improving her short game, so we can knock more shots of her current scores.
With my lessons now available, I am so grateful for the support so far. My goal is to help you achieve your goals and get your game where you want it to be!

Some great news to report this week that our very own Julie Currie has been chosen as June's readers rule of the month question on the R&A website. Julie asked what the ruling was with bridges over hazards as we have a few of these at CMGC. So if your ball lands on one of the bridges across a hazard e.g. the first of Foxes Run would you get free relief?
